I think he was outstanding in a Chelsea team that was at the tail end of its outstanding period.

 

Since they’ve hit the skids he’s become pretty poor. It’s a mentality issue - he doesn’t have the elite mindset like Drogba or Lampard to drag performances out themselves and others. He’s lost 6 out of 7 finals with them and that’s partly the issue. This type of player used to be called ‘big time Charlies’ but ‘mentally fragile’ is more germane. See Milwall away. Or the last season with us when the chips were down.

 

He’s wrapped up in his own importance, that lad. Could be brilliant if he was a bit more self aware.
