HybridFox Posted 10 September 2019 Posted 10 September 2019 Some of my southern mates don't understand why I have to do roundabout journeys to such towns to save money. It's a joke to be honest. At the same time it's also ridiculous how we're not even connected properly regionally. How are there no direct trains between Leicester and Cov? Or even Leicester-Northampton? Wasting billions on HS2 while the rail route continues to be broken across the country.
Dan Posted 10 September 2019 Posted 10 September 2019 Always thought we must have just about the worst connections in the country when you consider the size and location of Leicester. It's really weird.

Will we ever play Leeds again? Maybe in the cup I suppose.
Ian Nacho Posted 15 September 2019 Posted 15 September 2019 It is garbage. When we play in London I just drive down to Rugby and get the train down to Euston. Much cheaper than Leicester. On the off chance going on the train is viable going north I do the same but going to Nuneaton. Pathetic that Hinckley has better transport links than Leicetser.
Voll Blau Posted 3 October 2019 Posted 3 October 2019 Quote Planners say re-opening the railway line between Market Harborough and Northampton should be considered. They say running trains along the fourteen mile route along the Brampton Valley Way, currently popular with walkers and cyclists, would open up a new north/south national rail corridor, linking the Midland Mainline with the West Coast main line. The idea is included is the West Northamptonshire Strategic Plan, which maps out development plans for the next 30 years, although includes no details how it would link into the current tracks to serve Harborough Station. Steve Jones, Chairman of Harborough Rail Users Group, says in principle it would be a welcomed development: The railway between Market Harborough and Northampton shut in 1981, although the final passenger services stopped in 1972, after re-starting for a time following their first withdrawal in 1960. https://harboroughfm.co.uk/could-harborough-northampton-railway-re-open/?fbclid=IwAR1xEBNEHzWH9fQ1iFNP-RMTyH7wz76gqCxUjbOqcGz4uTxlE3yPmcnM_5I Would open up a few more options from Leicester for trains heading south. Absolute pipe dream though, you'd have to rip up a fair bit of the south of Harborough to get the line up to scratch I'd have thought. Not to mention the level crossings you'd have to reinstall across the already congested roads round there.

Hinckley is woefully connected by train. We get maybe 2 trains an hour, 1 to Leicester and 1 to Birmingham. With an occasional train to Cambridge a couple of times a day. If I wanted to get to Coventry by train it takes best part of an hour, maybe longer. Train to Loughborough takes the same. On top of that shit, the ticket office is open a few hours a day and we have no ticket machine. So you either have it on your phone or end up paying when the inspector undoubtedly turns up. Don't hit me with Hinckley being well connected
twoleftfeet Posted 6 October 2019 Posted 6 October 2019 Hs1 hasnt improved transport in the south in now takes 1hr 10 mins on the fast hs1 train from Dover to London and cost a lot more than it used to when it took 1 hr 20 mins. The never used to be a premium to catch the fast service over the stopping service the is now.

Sol thewall Bamba Posted 7 October 2019 Posted 7 October 2019 Ha! Try getting anywhere by train from down here. The conurbation of Bournemouth and Poole has a population 100K higher than Leicester and we have one train line, in and out. Almost impossible to get anywhere other than Southampton or London without changing. Almost 2 hours to London (about the same distance as the crow flies as Leicester) on the stopping service.

Yes the City of Leicester has a population of roughly 350000.Add on Wigston and Oadby Braunstone Town, Birstall Thurrmaston etc etc and the urban area totals half a mill. I do get your point though.Bournemouth is a lot bigger than people think. In fact from Brighton to Poole it’s pretty much built up.With just a gap where the New Forest is.At least the road network could be worse.Although I’m sure it’s murder during summer.I’ve worked down there a few times. It’s such a lovely place.
Voll Blau Posted 25 October 2019 Posted 25 October 2019 Quote The Transport Secretary says he is ‘very supportive’ of re-opening the railway line from Market Harborough to Northampton. It was revealed earlier this month the idea is being looked into and Network Rail is now carrying out a ‘high-level feasibility’ study to see if there would be a business case for re-instating the route, Passenger services were first withdrawn in 1960 and the 14-mile line finally shut in 1981, with it being converted into the Brampton Valley Way for walkers and cyclists. Grant Shapps responded to a question from Northampton South MP Andrew Lewer in the House of Commons: A Network Rail spokesman told Hfm: “We are carrying out a high-level feasibility study on the route to inform funders where there may be a potential business case for re-instating the route, as part of England’s Economic Heartland’s wider transport strategy.” Still think it's a pipe dream, but there must be something in it if Network Rail reckon it's actually worth a look... https://harboroughfm.co.uk/government-backing-to-re-open-railway/?fbclid=IwAR2NNVX7xNODv7JOHlUy-_xBQtAvOONGHsAGeMRQmWU1BPuTG0vndR6nw-Q

We can't even attract half decent shops unless it's a Pound Shop or a chicken shop. We have idiots in charge of this city who couldn't organise a pi$$ up in Everards. You’re right. Leicester City Centre is an absolute fookin pigsty
