Premier League big six 'fight European giants' to stop new 14-game Champions League group

The proposed new system would come into effect in 2024 and could mean the extinction of the Carabao Cup - with winner having to play 21 games

Premier League clubs are attempting to convince European sides to reject a proposal by the European Clubs Association to change the format of the Champions League.

The plan would see the elite sides in the continent play a total of 14 group games, with four groups of eight clubs, before the top four clubs in each group go through to a last-sixteen knockout phase.

It would mean that in total the eventual winners would have to play 21 games to be victorious in the competition and it could see the Carabao Cup being scrapped as a result, because it would clash with midweek Champions
According to the Sun the plans are being met with approval by teams in Spain, Italy and Germany amongst others, but there is opposition from the Premier League, with every team in the big six as well as Newcastle , Everton and Leicester rejecting the ideas proposed at a recent meeting in London.

There are also plans for the Europa League to follow a similar format and for the introduction of a third European competition.

Speaking to the Sun an insider said: “This is a sign the biggest clubs recognise the importance of English football as a whole.

“They are not fighting for themselves — they would potentially earn more money from Europe.

“But they know it would damage the Premier League, the EFL, even the National League. It is about helping to keep the whole game alive.”

Uefa and the ECA want to make a concrete proposal by November, while there is another ECA general assembly meeting next month in which the matters will be discussed further.

English clubs were dominant in Europe last season, with Liverpool beating Tottenham in the final of the Champions League and Chelsea overcoming Arsenal in the Europa League final.

Football's done OK for a hundred or so years. Let's not Bury it.

Maybe they could have some other Boltons after all the League is not Maid(of)stone.

Whilst the League cup isn’t a big earner in prize money, the 45% split of gate receipts is a potentially big draw for many league teams who happen to draw a premier league side away (anyone that plays Man Utd for example is walking away with £500k due to Utd forcing STH to buy tickets).

If the Champions League teams don’t want to take part, fine, but once again the arrogance of UEFA that no games dare be played whilst the big teams are playing is staggering. This is a trophy - one which the supporters of 88 or so teams dream of winning. Why listen to them when they can just pander to the fact that the world apparently would rather watch Liverpool v Besiktas on a Wednesday night than supporters wanting to watch their team win a trophy.

Just going to leave this here.

Clubs and players really need to make a stand against this sort of expansion. Or players/stars need to understand that the extra profits of this shouldn't go into their wages but into the purchasing of and wages of a bigger squad. Maybe 25 senior members in a squad isn't enough, when managers can't trust youth when short-term results are so important. Or maybe radically, domestic leagues need to have less games; reduce the amount of teams, or restructure into different stages like Latin American leagues.

Regarding the UEFA tournaments, hopefully a compromise is found. Why not just keep it to 2, instead of introducing a 3rd no one, except the clubs in it, will really care about. If they want 96 clubs, expand the Champions League to 48 teams, alongside the Europe League, both with 8 groups of 6 teams. Top 3 advance, and the very top team of each group gets a bye round, awaiting in the round of 16. So 10 games for the worst teams, and likely 17 games (unlikely 19 games) at most for the finalists. Still too many, but it's a compromise.

This constant rehashing of league structures to give the big teams more money at the expense of the lower league teams, the annual changes to the the Rules of Football a game which has been going in an organised form for 150 years is slowly but surely spoiling my enjoyment and desire to watch it.

Every year we have to get used to different league set ups, different KO times, different kits, different rules. There's very little if any consistency in the game.

I can just about cope with what seems to be a shorter and shorter time you can hang onto your best players.

The Transfer window is an abomination of clickbait.

Bollocks I'm even bored with moaning about it because it's all here to stay and there's absolutely nothing the fans can do about any of it we're just the suckers providing the money and support for it all.

I feel for you, davieG. And I'm afraid you're right.

Just fcukin bored of it all, I despair.

Same. Summed it up perfectly.

I don't think I would bother watching it at all either. 0 interest in watching them play in what is essentially a European league. Would rather they went full knockout from the start.

I very rarely watch European games, CL or otherwise. The Prem or the English FA simply need to say no. and if UEFA want to go ahead pull out.

TBH I'd rather watch tonight's City newc reserves play than any game in the CL this season including the final.

The fact that this is a bad idea for football is apparent by the fact that the negotiations are going on in secret. No fan on earth is clamoring for two 8 team groups. If it were really good for the game, they would be trumpeting it! It is truly about the billionaires not just wanting to squeeze as much cash as possible out of a game, but also, those same billionaires wanting to shut the gate behind them and make sure no one else gets into their little club.

The Premier League are right to be cautious on this one. What a mind numbing way to decide who gets to the last 16.It may guarantee an extra 8 games for the chosen few,and it may be attractive to the clubs in Europe, who no longer have any competition in their own domestic leagues+ the cash. It will however devalue our own league and cause even more disruption than it does already. They should do everything they can to stop it.Just imagine how many dead rubbers we might have to endure.Cant stand this competition as it is.

It was once the European Cup and only champions took part. Now the Champions League is full of 2nd 3rd and 4th placed teams. Now they want 4th placed sides in the last 16 lollol Champions League more like a fecking lucky dip bag cup.

It’s mad how good football is still, considering every f ucking goober at FIFA, UEFA or IFAB is trying to change it for the worse.

If if we were shit and in the doldrums like in 04-08 all this fannying about with the game would turn me off it. It’s uncomfortable but you can tolerate a lot more when we’re in our strongest ever position.

I know this is a little bit old news, but they scrapped the cup winners, and now want to re introduce a 3rd competition. The powers that be are just a waste of time. Only in it for the money, free jolly boys outings.

I'd hate to see it as I love the fact success means, promotion then potentially playing in Europe. But the sooner the big clubs **** off and play in a european super league, just playing the same sides over and over and there only being 1 winner. The better.

Then the rest of us can sack off UEFA.

Greed and corruption rule. Just like everything else in the world. Crapification continues apace.
