EnderbyFox Posted 10 December 2019 Posted 10 December 2019 Depressingly I'm now reaching a stage of acceptance that it'll be a Tory majority. Surely Corbyn will have to go. Who do we think the next Leader will be? I imagine Jon Ashworth wont be throwing his hat in the ring Keir Starmer for me.
leicsmac Posted 10 December 2019 Posted 10 December 2019 With respect to the NHS, it is most certainly a political football and there seems to be a divide between those who think it needs reform and those who do not. I'm curious, however: to those who do think it needs reform, is there anything specific that you'd do in terms of reform and where would such reforms stand when it comes to the topic of the NHS remaining or not remaining free at the point of use for the vast majority of treatments?

For someone like me who doesn't really follow day to day politics I'm reliant on the information I am given in order to form an opinion. Interviews are a waste of time as all the interviewer is interested in is forcing a slip up and getting a story. They are going to get a pallet full of cash and deliver it to the front door of each hosiptal. Oh and payrises for Nurses.

WhatTheSchlupp? Posted 10 December 2019 Posted 10 December 2019 Can one of our resident tories on here please explain what the tories have actually done in the last 9 years to deserve another 5? What have they actually achieved in that time? They are going to be rewarded for the damaging policy of austerity, a political choice and not a necessity, cuts to social care and the police (which they say they will reverse as if that’s really generous of them), total mismanagement of the NHS, and an administration that has seen the earnings of the top 1% go up 185% in the last 10 years while 4 million children live in poverty. do our resident tories agree this last point especially is shocking for one of the richest countries on earth? Does it in anyway change their perception of the “one nation conservative” government we’ve had?

I can't disagree very much on the idea that the vast majority of the political class are self-serving dishonest pieces of work - that pretty much speaks for itself. But...knowing that, I wonder what that makes the populace that elected them and put them there? NB. For what it's worth and as anyone who's been around here for long enough, when it comes to morality my own personal morality is purely predicated on the long-term survival of humanity (not just one nation, not just one part of the species) as I think it's by far the simplest and purest moral motive, so quite frankly I'll plump for any politician whose own view and projected policy lines up with that.

It has pockets of outstanding care, and many examples of poor care. For it to be brilliant it would have to have a lot more of the outstanding and lot less of the poor.

Does it in anyway change their perception of the “one nation conservative” government we’ve had? Firstly, 4 million children do not live in poverty. Utter nonsense. This also had sod all to do with the earnings of the 1%, who have paid more tax than ever over this time. Austerity was required at the time. Worth remembering that Alastair Darling had also written an austerity budget when Carmeron put together the coalition. Did it go too far and for too long - yes I think it has. Good then that the new Government will have a new direction and substantially increase funding of the NHS, education and social care. I do think though that was there ANY sort of acceptable opposition leader, Labour would win this comfortably.

Starmer would be the best choice, but IF they have been smashed in the North they can't seriously pick an Islington based fanatical remainer can they? I'd say Rebecca Long-Bailey or Richard Burgon for next leader. 7 minutes ago, WhatTheSchlupp? said: Can one of our resident tories on here please explain what the tories have actually done in the last 9 years to deserve another 5? I'm voting for them to get Brexit done and to make sure people like Corbyn, McDonnell and Abbott don't get near office. But positives from the last nine years are the deficit reduction, the EU referendum and little else. But you don't get things done with coalitions and no majorities. I want to see better though in the next five.

There are many areas that need review procurement, management structures, social care provision, people using ambulances as taxis, piss heads and druggies filling up a and e. Money wont solve it, the world is fundamentally different to when it was created. That's not to say it doesn't have fantastic areas and staff. Throwing money at it with no real plan just wont help. It needs a bigger review.
