Huge spike in premier league injuries due to fixture congestion

Recommended Posts

If they are playing too many games this season over a short period of time, wait until 2022 with the world Cup in Qatar when it's played from the end of November until just before Christmas. There will be a hell of a lot of games to fit in, season will probably start earlier and finish later

It's what makes the English game unique and the most popular league in the world. It's designed to be difficult and put teams and their squads through a brutal 38 game test. If it was to change the English game would just become like any other and would lose fans and revenue. Instead of complaining clubs should spend some of their cash on improving their squads rather than just their first 11s. All premier league teams can afford to do so.

I thought the spike in Prem injuries was because Hamza got a couple of games.

btw I agree with the sentiment that prem teams have so much money and such large squads that they can rotate players to avoid injuries. It's their choice to play the same 11 in every game. it's called management.

I love the amount of games we get to see over the festive period when most people are off work and have the opportunity to enjoy it. Rather than drop a fixture over that period is there not an argument to bring the 3rd round FA cup ties a week forward and pushing back league fixtures a week to allow for the inevitable squad rotation to happen without the potential impact it has on teams league campaigns

Good idea, have loved the wall to wall footy, after all, it's what Christmas is all about.

Also these lads aren't long out of small trousers, they can play 4 games a weekend.

When you look at the figures Newcastle have more than 3 times the average number of injuries of the rest of the teams in the league. Whilst it could just be bad luck, you have to feel that it could be something more fundamental that the club are or aren't doing that put their players at risk.

26 of them are knocks or physical injuries which is just incredibly bad luck. Either bad luck or poor preparation for Newcastle to have so many hamstring injuries in one game isn't a coincidence.

They don't all have the luxury of sitting 2nd in the table like we do. Nor do they have the luxury of having a squad as strong as ours. Much harder to make wholesale changes and potentially chuck away points when you're down at the bottom.

We were 'lucky' that we were playing two poor sides where we could afford to rest players, had we been playing Chelsea and Man U then things may have changed.

Surely there is a case to be made that the rotated players perform better than the usual, more fatigued players?

No guarantee that you are sending out a worse team by resting players instead of forcing them to play.

Sending out a fresh second string side was definitely better than making everyone play again, we're just lucky to have a fair amount of quality to call upon from the squad. Can't imagine many 2nd XI's would've gone to West Ham and got that result. Plenty on here were sure we'd get battered when the lineups were announced.

Compared to 15 years ago, they also play on better pitches, benefit from better sports science and medicine, better nutrition and fitness regime, and paid a whole of a lot more money - and increasingly the game has less contact and you couldn’t get away with the tackles that were virtually routine 15 years ago.

Good point 👍

I can’t believe that people are talking about ditching the League Cup.

The League Cup is not the issue. It gives another semi-realistic opportunity for middle-ranking sides to win something or at least have a day out at Wembley.

The real problem is the Champions League and Europa League group stages, which are a transparent cash grab by the biggest clubs in Europe. Six pointless games played by sides with already enormous squads in which at least 14 of the 16 richest sides waltz through to the second round. And then the English entrants have the brass neck to complain that the League Cup (for which they miss an extra round) is putting too much of a strain on their players.

As for the Christmas schedule, it’s obviously completely unnecessary and as others have said could easily be solved by moving the game between Boxing Day and NYD to earlier or later in the season. This year we had 12 league matches between the middle of August and end of November and then 9 between 1 December and 1 January.

Replays are part and parcel of the FA Cup. A massive money-spinner for lower league clubs too.

When Burton earned a replay with Man United in 2006, the income generated from the two games helped pay off their costs of purchasing the land and building their new stadium. And a reward for the players to play at a big ground.

The issues are with scheduling

Anyone ever noticed the huge spike in Premier League 'injuries' ahead of pointless International Friendlies aswell? Just saying.

Roy Keane used to be very unlucky.

He would often be suspended or injured over the christmas period and would have to fly back to Ireland for ‘recuperation’

So shouldn’t this also be an argument for reducing the amount of European and international fixtures?

But no, surprise surprise the managers are more interested in ruining British football tradition than deciding not to go to Qatar mid-season for a lucrative competition than means nothing to 99% of football fans.

Yes, I did wonder if it's coincidence that this 'huge spike' in injuries occurs just at a time when families want to spend time together!

How many of these injuries are real injuries? If your not playing you can probably eat and drink what you want over the xmas period plus when we played Newcastle they had 4 players go off injuried, apart from the last one you could question if the other 3 fancied it, it was a long afternoon for Newcastle.

Scouse with the TV stuff and the people mentioning the European schedule are spot on- they are congesting the fixture list. The League Cup is not an issue- the European teams play in September, October then December if they reach the quarter-finals- three midweeks across three months- terrible times.

The fact we play six group matches, then the second round of the Champions League is played over four midweeks, limits the ability to be flexible. Plus we've got this two week break to fit in during February. We could easily take out the Saturday/ Sunday games from last week and put it in August for example if we had straight knockouts in Europe. But would they want the lost revenue from four European games before Christmas? Of course not.

Then the TV issue which is always contentious at this time of year- it is a lottery as to what you are given. I believe, in the past four years, we've been among the shortest in terms of breaks between games- we had to go to Middlesbrough 45 hours after playing three years ago, then four games in 8 days in the next year, an early kick off at Everton last year and now another 45 hour turnaround. Liverpool, for example, had their games spread out over a week, as did Sheffield United, with around 69 hours recovery time.

Reduce the European matches and stop being dictated to by TV and you'll get a better schedule. But no-one wants to tackle it.

Christmas break is one of the best parts of the season for UK fans. Helps build the premier league as all major European leagues are closed.

I would remove the 'West Ham fixture' on the 28th I think it was. And keep the other 3 games over this period.
