davieG Posted 12 April 2020 Posted 12 April 2020 https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/sport/leicester-prioritise-helping-the-nhs-over-wage-deferrals-tlsz9nxmm Leicester prioritise helping the NHS over wage deferrals Jonathan Northcroft, Football Correspondent Saturday April 11 2020, 6.00pm, The Sunday Times Leicester City have put wage deferrals on the backburner in order to focus on helping the community and the NHS. Serving vital causes emerged as the key priority in talks on Friday between the club’s hierarchy, led by chief executive Susan Whelan, and manager Brendan Rodgers plus senior first-team players. Leicester do not intend to join Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Bournemouth and Norwich City in furloughing staff — and have not sought to address their players’ pay, despite a Premier League recommendation that clubs ask players for a 30 per cent wage reduction over 12 months during the coronavirus pandemic. The 2016 champions instead committed to helping services deal with the health crisis and have come up with novel ways to help the Leicester NHS, which include making headbands for NHS staff to protect them from sores while wearing facemasks and helping deliver education via video to the children of key workers. Other initiatives include putting staff at NHS disposal as drivers to distribute food parcels and vouchers in Leicester and Birmingham. The club have made a substantial donation to the NHS while giving King Power Stadium’s car parks over to nearby Leicester Royal Infirmary. The club has also created initiatives to help the homeless and connect with isolated and vulnerable supporters, while also supporting Age UK. Rodgers is said to have, personally, made “an extraordinary donation” to three British charities. Leicester are not the only Premier League club declining to press their players for wage cuts — Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers are among the others — but some teams are in a different financial position and, on Friday, West Ham United joined Southampton in agreeing wage deferrals with players. Elsewhere in the competition it is understood talks between players and clubs are not going so well, however, amid continuing acrimony generated by the health secretary, Matt Hancock, who intervened on player wages, leading to the Premier League’s subsequent decision to recommend across-the-board cuts.
katieakita Posted 12 April 2020 Posted 12 April 2020 Hats off yet again to the club, Top and co really are a class act of course you would expect nothing less from Top having such a fantastic role model in his father so proud and so lucky to be a Leicester fan
Gamble92 Posted 12 April 2020 Posted 12 April 2020 As right as everyone was to give the backlash to the Health Secretary, it still annoyed me the way Gary Neville and a few others at the PFA have spoken about the subject. Neville crying that some of these lads have just worked hard and arent from priveleged upbringings and wont accept 30% cuts without warning etc. Try being in all of our shoes at the minute. People on minimum wage zero hours contracts are getting 20% taken off or let go without warning. It was obvious the spotlight was going to be put on footballers. We aren't exactly getting the violins out Gary.
TheUltimateWinner Posted 12 April 2020 Posted 12 April 2020 Our clubs countless actions make me so proud.
justfoxes Posted 12 April 2020 Posted 12 April 2020 This Club under these amazing owners have set a benchmark to how modern day Premier League clubs should be run, i for one am so proud of how we have a family who have set out to not only look after the fans of our amazing Football Club but the local community and also the NHS. Top has been a credit to his late father who started his generous charitable causes building new units in hospitals etc, Top has carried on in his fathers memory & honour I’m sure Khan Vichai is looking down at our beloved club and is Proud of what his son has achieved for the Leicester City family & community ! Stay Safe all in this mad times Leicester City Family. 💙🦊💙🦊
dmayne7 Posted 12 April 2020 Posted 12 April 2020 The way that article is titled makes it sound like we're choosing one positive at the expense of another when it reality we're choosing a positive over an negative and in fact, choosing to do 2 positive things. Yet another win by the owners/football club. How times have changed
Danizen Posted 12 April 2020 Posted 12 April 2020 I love this. We're going about things the right way. It's almost as if Top sat down and thought, 'what would he have done in this situation?'

Something that almost makes me cry a little (for joy!) is that I feel like the spirit of Vichai not only lives on in Top, but now the players and fans too. I think we are being a little unfair to Top, Wheelan, Rudkin and all at the club by saying they are think about what Vichai would do, because I think the club has arguably taken things to another level. The reaction to Vichai passing away made them realise how special both the club and fanbase are, and since then look at how well our club has been run; selling Maguire for crazy money, signing Tielemans, bringing in Rodgers, committing to the new Training Centre, Stadium Improvements planned. At the same time, keeping up things like a free beer and merchandise at certain games. The reaction to this virus makes me proud. Coming together in a time of need and giving back to the country and city. Top and co really are a chip off the old block and I hope this becomes the culture of the club going forwards. Compared to other clubs perhaps we don't have such a rich history, but we are writing our own now. I'd like to think that in 20-30 years time when maybe Top's own son is in charge that all the values of today are still kept, and their is a bond between owners and fans of the club as we all sing along in the Jamie Vardy stand!
TWUKO Posted 12 April 2020 Posted 12 April 2020 I think we've taken the right stance unlike other clubs! If we were to put staff on 80%, we'd be accused of sponging of the government, whilst week in week out we pay some players over 100k a week. Footballers will always come under fire when times are hard for people, I've got no problem with players earning millions a year, they are effectively elite athletes and play a sport that requires huge amounts of talent and their careers are limited to 10 years at the top level if they're lucky! Football is a sport that is the most in demand from audiences, that's why tv broadcasters pay billions for it, if it wasn't football it would be something else! I would also argue that all premier league players would be paying about 40% in tax too, so when you think about it when you see 2 teams go head to head on a Saturday afternoon the 22 men on the pitch chasing that ball around pay more in tax than the 32k spectators watching them! It's unfair to take aim at footballers, they are far more big businesses contributing very little to our economy other than employing people! Some PL clubs should hang their heads in shame though, every team gets a minimum of £100 million, and as long as the season is completed they wont be out of pocket, so there is no need to seek government help or ask players to defer wages! Like some have said the premier league should probably be looking to help the leagues below because whilst Leicester City and its staff will be ok, Lincoln City etc. Might not be!

If the season finishes, the clubs that used the Furlough scheme should be forced to repay the taxpayer from their PL income.

peach0000 Posted 12 April 2020 Posted 12 April 2020 I didn't expect anything less from the club as we always seem to do things right. I would like the authorities (premier league, fa etc) to look at teams like West Ham and Spurs because either they are being ***** in order to gain a competitive advantage or they have been living way beyond their means, either way it needs investigating and punishing.

Of course they’re out of pocket. They are going to lose 4/5 home games worth of income.Fans can’t demand better players and more cash spent on transfer fees and wages, then be mystified when it turns out there’s a cashflow problem when the game grinds to a halt.

You can add the Arsenal players to that list by all accounts that have point blank refused any wage deferrals or wage cuts to assist the club whilst the clubs income has reduced alike all the rest of the leagues, but then the same could be said about the financial institutions where Bankers etc are still raking in their Multi Million pound bonuses You don’t hear that the head of any big financial institution taking cuts or donating any of their bonuses to charities?

Being completely honest, if I’d worked hard to become very wealthy, I wouldn’t be too happy about donating a fortune to the government baring in mind how much tax I’d already paid. Bailing the government out for mismanaging the NHS for years shouldn’t fall on individuals such as footballers and bankers. Without going too much into politics, we (the UK) spend far too much money in unnecessary areas (foreign aid to nations who clearly don’t need it) which would make me feel reluctant to give my hard earned money. Are MPs giving something back rather than claiming for everything? Players should contribute to keeping the clubs staff paid mind you.
