I have no idea, but I think mine is big enough. We've got a huge garden and I hate it, way too big and we hate gardening.

However, that could be about to change if we have a peacock roaming.

Imagine inviting people over for a BBQ, they come over and there's just this magnificent bird strutting about with its feathers up lol

They're noisy buggers.

I think the point of EDT's is that you can fly to somewhere for the day for the same cost or cheaper than a day out in the UK, with a better day out somewhere in the sun in mainland Europe rather than the rain in Blackpool.

I guess that’s the point, these places aren’t far away/one-off places to visit anymore. Few hours or so flight and a £20 Ryanair means you can go as many times as you like to explore. You’re not gonna experience the true Catalan vibe with 5 days in Barcelona speaking English and following a trip advisor tour itinerary anyway

So, unless I'm mistaken, you're saying go to Barcelona or any regional capital on several day trips to experience the "vibe".

You're not gonna experience the "true Catalan vibe" by doing that.

What rubbish and how patronising is your response.

I've been to a number of interesting cities and spent time there, absorbing the culture over a period of days. I've never used trip advisor, I've just made my own choices and explored at my leisure without having to think I've got to be back at the airport in an hour having sat at a Las Ramblas bar for a couple of hours and never taking the time to actually take in and appreciate what the city has to offer.

If you went to Rome for a day on a £20 Ryanair flight, do you think you have time to visit the Colosseum, the Vatican, the Trevi fountain etc before getting back in time for check-in?

There's better places for a day trip in England than Blackpool.

Places you can actually drive to and not have the restrictions of flight times. Go and return as it suits.

EDT's are another fad where someone has posted about it on FB and the dim sheep have said "yeah, I'll go for that cos it's on FB innit. I wanna post my pics of me at a bar in Magaluf and be back home in time for bed."

Twats.

LOL dude calm down….
The fact you’ve stated a ‘las rambles bar’ and ‘what the city has to offer’ in the same sentence says it all about what tourists like you do in major cities

I think it leads into a whole wider point about tourism. There's a commercial race to find the next place to visit which tourism has not homogenised. You only have to look at how Albania has gone in the last five years for this. Ultimately it's a tough balance for a lot of cities and resorts - you want to improve the economy but not at the expense of the locals and authenticity.

I am no better - when I research places to visit I am looking for the area which has probably in reality gentrified or has yet to be touched.

The EDTs sit wrong on me on terms of relaxation - to counter Deb's point, I'd normally at least stay over a night even in the UK. I am fortunate enough to afford that but I suppose my thought process has been if you can afford something, wait and save that little bit more for something better.

Obviously there are better places than Blackpool, it was just an example. I've seen people compare the cost of taking their family somewhere like Legoland or Alton Towers for the day, and it works out cheaper to fly to an equivalent abroad, similar to people choosing to travel to Center Parks in France instead of the UK.

I haven't got the energy or the inclination to travel somewhere just for the day trying to see as much as possible, and I'm lucky that we can afford to stay in the places we choose to visit, but I understand why some people would choose to fly somewhere for the day, and after all it's up to them how they spend both their money and their time.

Of course there may be people choosing a day trip just to post pics on Insta, everywhere is filled with people doing stupid poses for the camera nowadays, whether they are there for a day or a month.

Like Groby points out many people aren't travelling to experience the real culture anyway so a day or a week wouldn't make much difference.

A lot of NW European cities are probably easier and cheaper to get to by train from London than northern England or Scotland. I've done Paris as a day trip or overnight stay before, gone to one or two galleries and a typical restaurant. I can't abide people who just want to tick off countries, have met a lot of Anglo backpackers like that in the Balkans, but if you just want a quick break, soak up the atmosphere a but and take some photos then great. As others have said you're not really going to properly understand a place unless you live there so 2 or 5 days makes not much difference.

Just don't use Airbnb.

I do understand both sides of the EDT. Its not something I have ever done, but I guess its similar to having a long day trip out whilst on holiday to see another city (which I have done to see if we like the place enough to visit fully)

We have generally gone abroad rather than places further away in the UK. It can take the same time, less money and better weather to fly somewhere for the week than go to Scotland or down south.

We also knew that when our son was born these places was going to be a better option at times, rather than school holiday prices lol

As someone who does not enjoy being on a plane, the idea of getting on a plane to go somewhere for the day and then to come back on a plane on the same day, sounds absolutely revolting.

This is the main reason I don't do it. If I'm going somewhere reasonably far like southern Italy I'll usually fly out, while sedated, then come back slowly by train so I can enjoy the holiday without thinking of the flight back.

Where are these cheap flights everyone is talking about? Every time I look at flight prices, even to places in Europe, they are nowhere near as little as £20.

Stansted has really cheap flights.

Yeah I keep getting half way to booking a trip to Belgium and then argue about where we should go and abandon it.

Compelling value though.

Milan for one, flight out for Inter's final home game of the season was £14.54 outbound and £19.69 inbound when I had a look last week.

Don't wanna trigger anyone but return flights, basic 3* hotel and match tickets were costing about as much as a London away day.... DM for extreme 1-nighter.

Cheap because you have to sit on Ryanair - horrible experience and avoid at all costs!

Another unpopular opinion incoming..... I quite like them..... Cheap as chips and plenty of loopholes. And if they do charge you anything extra at the gate, keep all the receipts and claim it back on credit card

Few better than Emirates too. I just think the experience is naff, the pricing complex and sometimes the people on the flights are questionable. Had a good recent experience with Jet 2

Qatar, Etihad, Turkish, Singapore. Raised the bar to another level. Had 17 hours on a BA plane to Buenos Aires in November, once you've flown with a proper customer-focused airline you cannot set foot on the tired, cheap and naff concept BA push out. Dreadful airline.

Anything under 5/6 hours doesn't bother me. Pretty much a bus at that time length.

Experience with Ryanair - wholly dependent on your fellow passengers and your destination. Had some very, comfy easy flights when it’s somewhere like Bilbao or Turin. Ryanair compact the market with Malaga etc type flights and unsurprisingly they are hell.

The worst budget airline is Wizzair.
