Travelling over next month. What’s the craic with bringing vapes over? Not disposable ones, but my rechargeable one.

Seems like the rules are quite ambiguous or confusing.

TIA

Traveller’s exemption

From 1 January 2024, travellers entering Australia can only bring a maximum of 2 disposable vapes with them.

From 1 March 2024, travellers entering Australia can only bring a small quantity of vapes with them. The vapes must be for use in the treatment of the traveller or someone they are caring for, who is entering Australia on the same ship or aircraft.

The maximum allowable quantity is:

  • 2 vapes in total (whether disposable or reusable),
  • 20 vape accessories (including cartridges, capsules or pods), and
  • 200mL of vape substance in liquid form.

Vapes that contain substances that are controlled drugs under regulation 5 of the PI Regulations, such as cannabis oil, are not counted in the above limits. These products remain subject to the existing traveller’s exemption.

Seemed strange they’d rather you buy fags than vape

I suppose this depends on whether you're trying to quit smoking or if you like vaping, but the only thing that got me to quit was patches.

Plus they end up cheap when you work out you can keep buying the biggest ones and cut them down in half then quarters, rather than buy the lesser mg versions which are literally just smaller patches.

Maybe not for you/everyone but just a thought.

Agree here - vaping is just an extension to smoking and IMO probably more addictive than cigs due to its convenience.

Speaking from personal experience, vaping can really help you quit the habit. I used to smoke roll-ups. Buying 50gm of tobacco a week.

2 years ago I decided i really needed to stop so switched to 12g of nicotine vapes, after a year i dropped to 9g nicotine and then 6 months later dropped to the lowest nicotine 3g.

I now buy a mix of zero nicotine and 3g and mix them and plan in the new year to drop to just zero.

Bearing in mind there is no tar in vaping so its way less harsh on the lungs.

Although there is no long term evidence available as yet, i do think vaping is a great way to assist in stoping fags.

Absolutely- they’re great for people who want to pack the fags in.

Used to be on 20 a day 8 years ago but I can’t even stand the thought of one when out on the ale these days

But of course the NHS don’t waste money

I was working at a retirement village yesterday. Ambulance arrived at the reception as I was there collecting keys. Returned said keys an hour later and the ambulance engine was still running, with the medics still inside the building treating the patient

All corporates are like this because people do not care about something they do not pay for. Come and see my workplace if you want to see wasted money, it's a lot worse than leaving the thermostat on 25

TBF, that's not standard practice. In my job I see plenty of ambulances at homes and houses. Don't think I've ever seen one running unattended. Maybe they needed to charge some equipment or initially though they'd just be a few minutes?

I'm sure @Parafox can enlighten us.

As far as I'm aware it's actually a criminal offence to leave a vehicle running unattended.

Ok I'll bite.

There'll never be any system anywhere where you couldn't find tiny savings due to human errors. None

But the idea that there's huge waste in the NHS, or anywhere else in the public sector, after 14 years of cuts and cost improvement programmes, is really just silly at this point.

The one thing you could look at if you want the public sector to spend less is the private sector companies that overcharge to the public sector because they can, and because the other companies doing the same work are also playing that game.

Really? So the NHS is now some well oiled machine all of a sudden?

I think there is a lot more to go at than tiny savings.

Might be daft, but do the engines stay on to help run essential machines/equipment?

Like how some car radios or air con won't work with the engine off etc etc.

I always enjoy visiting a hospital record room that I converted from a ward 4 years previously back. It means I get to convert it into a much needed ward.

I sometimes then get the job of converting a different room to a record store.

What do you think they've been doing for 14 straight years? Every NHS trust has had fully audited schemes running the entire time to cut costs. It absolutely drives me nuts when people with zero knowledge just say there's loads of waste, or lots to go at, with literally no idea what's actually been happening in the NHS.

When did you last build out convert into a medical records room?

Pre-covid probably. 2019 I expect.

It was just one example.

The amount spent on feasibility studies and business cases that never go anywhere is weird as well.
