Yeah didn't go according to plan lol

I think part of bowling first is the lack of trust in the batting order, didn't want to be 3 down for nothing in the first hour of the series.

I think the batting won't be a problem plenty of experience and big game players, our problem will be taking 20 wickets. Very nice finish to the session, they will be kicking themselves at losing them so close to lunch, needless ones too no need to play at those balls they were nothing special at all. Good catch by Smith.

I say this as someone with limited cricket knowledge but this Carse looks a pretty average bowler

The tragic thing is that he’s been englands best bowler (Stokes aside)

You can always rely on Stokes to make something happen.

Been the best bowler by far. The oner that looks the most likely to take more wickets.

Pant is in a very attacking mode but apart from that 2nd ball smash over Stokes' head, he's not middling much.

Broad and Anderson covered a lot of issues with the next generation, especially with the injuries to the real pace bowlers.

Hope Stokes doesn't have to overbowl himself.

He will go to Australia, he has pace & bounce & can bat.

He should do ok down under.

Woakes won't go in my opinion, even at his best, 80 mph in an Ashes series, away from home is more often than not, easy pickings.

Over rate appalling again. In glorious weather, fans paying a fortune will miss out on several overs.

It's a disgrace & nobody does anything about it. Why can't they stay out there until they've bowled the overs, it's light till 10.00!!

Just to highlight how  bad it is, it's 96 overs in the County Championship

The over rate is crap but while it's 'light' at 10pm, try seeing a dark red cricket ball fly at you at 60mph even if it is just spin lol

I think my fury at the situation did lead to a bit of exaggeration on my part.

It will be six to eight overs which is 30-40 minutes. Being forced to bowl all overs would hopefully kick teams up the arse.

Unfortunately TV has a schedule to abide by, so money probably comes into it. I agree in principle though, but not a lot will change sadly.

Already looks like the only two positive outcomes for England here are winning by batting once and racking up a truly monster total, or at least matching the first innings total and rolling on to the draw.

I also don’t understand how people afford this anymore. Expensive ticket and then £7.30 cheapest pint. I’m going to day 1 of edgbaston and day 3 of old Trafford too and seriously considering driving.

People have been voting with their feet in recent years. And rightly so.

A day like T20 Finals Day is miles better value for your cricket day out each year.

I'm going on Sunday, with the train up tomorrow and overnight accommodation, it will cost me over £300. I'm going to Edgbaston too, but that is cheaper for me as I'll up and down on the day

I’m going day 1 Edgbaston. Think ticket was £120. Add your booze, food and travel it’s easily double that. Always a great day but it is starting to get a bit silly. Paid £60 at Trent Bridge 7 years ago for a day at a test.

Yep it’s a lot. But after a really fun day out and minor heatstroke it seems very worth it. I’m sure as the 2nd and 4th tests get nearer I won’t drive.

It’s particularly galling as I want to the last Eng v ind test in dharamsala which was £2.50 a ticket.
