It's not a negotiation, we could end up with both or neither, and the result of one has no real bearing on the other. Hopefully the players aren't thinking about this, don't worry about which you could be "given", instead get greedy and take everything we possibly can!

To be fair, I never said it was.

My apologies, it was a bit unnecessary, and as a question it is perfectly valid. I personally favour top 4 with further awards in the future more likely, but I also see the desire for trophies today, rather than more potential in the future.

I didn't respond to the previous 'which would you rather have' thread. It seemed pointless, as, as you've stated, none of the potential outcomes are interdependent. Psychologically or emotionally (whichever one prefers) howyever, a defeat/victory this Saturday will have repercussions next week.

Personally, were we to win the Cup, the Champion's League would become meaningless. I cannot quite understand why it's so meaningful to fans of those clubs outside of the blessed circle of 'the Traitorous Twelve' or Bayern/Dortmund.

It's like qualifying for the Olympic 100m sprint eighth fastest. The likelihood of winning is so remote one might as well take photos and chat with the spectators.

Sure, it's money, but hard earned and with little to show for it - especially knowing that the Premier is the measure of football capability at this time - with Real, Barca, Juve and PSG not performing to the standards their reputations imply.

This has been done to death but the Cup Final feels more once in a lifetime. I've seen Leicester in the CL and I believe we'll qualify for it again, even if we don't this year. I realise that's something of a paradox since perennial top 4 challengers are also likely to get to cup finals, but still....

I’m torn. You always have to go with honours and silverware, in some ways Tuesday’s match is more important because if we do qualify for Champions League football this season it could help strengthen us immeasurably for the next 5-10 years in terms of players we get to keep and attract, and also the manager.

I was Champions League all the way up until very recently.  I see the players Man Utd have has back up on Tuesday and the squad depths Chelsea, Man City and even Arsenal can boast and I can’t help thinking we’ve done absolutely brilliant but I can’t see how we sustain such a lofty position going forward competing with these clubs. Yes I know earning money form Champions League will strengthen us and make us more likely to win things going forward but what things can we expect to win? Surely the Domestic Cups would be our most likely successes so I’m now like let’s win it tomorrow. If this brilliant couple of season league wise fades next season at least we have collected something during the Rogers era. I’d love both but a Cup win it is now for me.

I'd take finishing sixth right now to guarantee the FA Cup tomorrow.

Another major trophy, one we've never won, and then go again next year.

Not sure players will be scrambling to leave us if we don't make top four this season.

Did Spurs and Arsenal lose key players last summer when they didn't make CL ?

Are we spurs or arsenal? Like it or not the fact remains if the players we have stop believing in the project here and jump ship, we could very quickly fall back down the table. We don't have the finances, nor the historical pull to just endlessly replace players with ones that are just as good. That's why we only let one go a season. If a mass exodus happened the clubs ability to compete could disappear over night

The owners would not let us have a mass exodus. Anyone key who was sold would go for big money and that would be ploughed back in.

Do you really think the best players would suddenly stop believing in us this summer if we finished outside the top four?

Head says CL for the money and player retention.

Heart says FA cup

Fully agreed.

CL this season will put us in a much better position financially, and probably give us the springboard for more challenges at the top 4 and/or FA cup in the next few seasons. That being said, it didn't work out that way for Tottenham, and I really, really want us to take home some silverware this year. The FA cup would complete our domestic collection and finally get rid of that unwanted title of FA cup nearly-men.

Reminds me of this.

If I compare how I might potentially feel if we win the cup compared to how I feel If champions League is confirmed. Then FA cup wins hands down.

Champions League will get a fist pump and a get in. Fa Cup will generate genuine emotion.

Possibly, but we would have won the FA cup.

Hang on - you’re talking about ‘competing’ - isn’t ‘winning’ the successful part of competing?

People choosing being (most likely) an also ran in a competition over actual success in the form of winning a trophy is beyond comprehension. There is no point ‘competing’ if your aim isn’t to win things.

I think people’s perspective has become warped since we won the league. We will not be a top 6 club forever, that status is fleeting. Thinking cups don’t matter because we can be a permanent fixture in Europe is deluded. Champions League money or not, we will eventually find our level again.

Winning something like the FA Cup is pretty much the be all and end all on the pitch. We might never get this opportunity again! Let’s have something to show for competing.

The biggest clubs win trophies.

What about if the Manager left, then they stop believing?
As for “did any top players leave arsenal or spurs last year” What about after 2 years without CL football?
It will be interesting to see what happens to Kane this summer.
Likewise who ends getting the Spurs Job.
