I'd say from our point of view they would be some of our closest rivals I can think of. Villa is always a grudge match for us and Spurs are almost on an equal footing nowadays

I wouldn't have said Chelsea but the events during and after the cup final has caused something of a stir.

Yeah from our point of view of teams in the prem yeah.

But they’re not really on the same level as us size wise are they?

25 odd seasons in the third tier, one major trophy. I personally don’t feel competitive with them because they literally have nothing over us.

There was real needle in the 00s when we played Cov when we were both really shit.

I don't think we really have any at the moment.

Obviously cov/forest/Derby would be instant again if they were promoted I guess but we're too far above them at this moment in time for there to really be anything there.

I think we're above the other teams in the chasing pack but too far below the 'elite' for there to be anything there either. We're in a weird spot on our own. But  quite happy with it tbh.

We are starting to step on the toes of the so called big six, and they aren’t really liking it, so in a sense we are growing new rivalries, the longer we continue to have success the more frustrated they will get lol

I would say our main local rivalries are forest, Derby and cov. Since we came back to the PL we've left them for dead, think we've only played Derby once in the cup since then, they're all absolute jokes of a football club to be honest, going nowhere fast. Most sack a manager every season, flirt with relagation, financial and ownership issues, stadium issues. I sometimes wonder if there's anyone left to support cov? Perhaps they support us now.

I do worry we'll have a younger generation that won't understand these rivalries. Have been to away games at all their grounds, found cov and forest quite threatening, Derby not so much, always seemed to get something there too. Hope they all end up in league one to be honest, always look out for their losses!

Villa are the further a field local rival for me, they probably see us as that too, even when they were good they didn't really have any major West Midlands rivals in the PL era. Birmingham for a bit maybe, west brom and wolves keep coming and going.

Non local rivals for me were Leeds, very hostile environment, there travelling fans are unbearable too. Absolutely vile fans, can see them getting under a few fans skin next season now they're allowed back in. I think they still think it's 1992 and they're challenging for the title. Pundits seem to think so anyway, they'll expect them to be pushing for the champions league next season! Really hope they suffer second season syndrome!

They did have until 15th May. The one thing they had, now they don't.

Nope. We have not. Football is fairly cyclical. Sometimes the cycle is long, other times not so. We are only a few players leaving, appointment of a shite manager or a number of bad acquisitions from tumbling back into the mix. And THAT is how I like it.

I have no interest in expecting success and trophies. If and when they come I want them to be miraculous and unexpected. The world of football has enough super clubs, greedy self- centred clubs. I want us to be what we are, striving for success but not expecting it.

Cov games always seemed like the ones with the most edge to me growing up.

A couple of Cov fans have said to me how much they hate that now we’re now seen as a likeable club. They’re incredibly bitter that we ended up with our owners and they got lumbered with SISU. Always saying that we ‘cheated’ in 2002/03 by getting promoted after going into administration.

The season of Earlsdon there was very large scale disorder with Cov home and away. Vividly remember blokes booting car fulls of their lot when they were leaving up Narborough Road.

But a rivalry isn't defined by the level you're at or how well you're doing.

If Birmingham dropped to the 4th tier and Villa were in the Champions League, it doesn't change. It just makes it all the more heated and intense when they meet again.

It makes the most sense that Cov would be our main rivals but it's not a feeling you can force or just develop because 'it should be them'. It is a shame we don't have a proper Derby, or atleast one in my eyes.

Of course it does - otherwise we’d be rivals with Burton Albion and Northampton Town

Yeah, I'd agree. Games against Derby were definitely the most tame.

I mean when it becomes a rival it doesn't change. Or if it does, it wasn't a great rivalry to start with.

Exactly - and even then we had three more t cups than then anyway so it was a pretty poor card to play.

As much as Derby and Forest are pretty much nobodies now, at least they historically beat us in some categories. I can’t think of a single category Cov would beat us in.

On Walnut Street after what I think was the last time we played them.

The difference is though that Blues and Villa are based like 2.5 miles away from each other and that Birmingham have at least spent a fair chunk of their history in the same league as Villa. That rivalry runs too deep for them to stop caring about each other because they're in different leagues.

There was a spell around the playoff final where they were the most volatile. Famously Frog Island/Woodgate was an absolute war zone before a rearranged midweek game. Practically fighting in what is now Kwik Save.

Honestly?

I see our rivals now as Man U, Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Not even going to mention London teams.

It's definitely a generational thing. I'm too young to have been to any games against them in the 90s.
