Charnwood Borough Council is proposing to grant FA Cup-winning Leicester City FC the Freedom of the Borough.

The honour, the highest the Council can bestow, would recognise the club’s incredible success in recent years and its connection to Charnwood.

The 2016 Premier League champions opened a £100 million training facility in the borough in 2020 at Seagrave and title-winning Leicester City Women FC are also based locally, playing home matches in Quorn.

The proposal will be considered by councillors on June 21 and if approved, an extraordinary meeting of the Council will be held in September.

Council leader Jonathan Morgan said: “Charnwood has a strong connection to Leicester City Football Club thanks to the training ground and it is also home to the women’s team. We feel their successes in recent years should be recognised.

“We are proud to have the club in our borough and we are proud of their achievements.

“We hope awarding them Freedom of the Borough will be another title that they can add to their growing roll of honour.”

The Local Government Act 1972 allows the Council to confer the title of Honorary Freeman on “persons who have, in the opinion of the Council have rendered eminent services to the Borough”.

The Council, on rare occasions, may choose to confer the Freedom of the Borough on organisations or objects where they are organisations linked to the borough which have rendered eminent services to the Borough.

There must be a resolution passed by not less than two-thirds of the members present at a meeting of the Council specially convened for the purpose of granting the Freedom of the Borough.

Decisions to agree nominations will be made at a specially convened Full Council meeting for this purpose by a vote of not less than two-thirds of the members present and voting

Freedom of the Borough is the highest honour which will only be awarded in exceptional circumstances where the prospective recipient is an individual or organisation of distinction that has rendered eminent services to the borough.

They will have demonstrated outstanding achievements in the borough and/or on the international stage which have brought pride and satisfaction to the borough.

The freemen of borough of Charnwood. Less catchy than “The unbelievables” but it does have a certain ring to it.

Means they can demand the first night with any newly-weds in the area, right?

Freedom of the Borough of Charnwood - you'll never sign that

Somebody please put this on a giant flag.

What does this actually mean though?

In practice, next to nothing
In essence though it's a recognition that few if any football clubs have be given for what they do in the community.  I reckon Top will be as pleased as punch.

I had no opinion on it when I started the thread - it just popped up.  On reflection though I think it's excellent, but those people that mock it or and take the p*ss can choose to be like that if they want.  Mind you I reckon they would accept it themselves if it were offered.

And I bet Spurs haven't got it ;)

If it means Marc Albrighton can take a poo in my Mum's garden... she'd probably be cool with that, he's her favourite.

Think Jonathan Morgan should give up his role as leader of Charnwood Borough Council. LCFC Women are full time professional now, that should be his sole focus as manager!

The way you punctuated the thread title, you have only yourself to blame.

Anybody I know would accept it!  Probably drive out of their way.

Yes I’m sure they’d rush to accept a meaningless made up accolade.
