Can we not have English refs at major tournaments, they are useless. Feels like the only games there have been major issues with VAR and refs are the ones managed by English refs

That is a shocking decision. The English referees have been really shown up as inferior in this tournament.

Despite what the biased English ref in the ITV studio says, he wasn’t high, wasn’t off the floor and there wasn’t excessive force. And he got the ball. It’s like he’s reading from a script whilst recieving a brown envelope.

Ruined a match that was on a knife edge.

It's not even as physical as that lol

Exactly, seemed a normal tackle, gets the player but also the ball… it is a yellow at most

He'll usually agree with the on field ref regardless and then when VAR checks it and overturns, he'll agree with that too.

Yeah I know

I'm surprised Oliver has given that. You'd think if anyone will be more lenient with strong tackles it would be the British refs. He's been fooled by the over the top reaction, that's why they do it. VAR hasn't got the bottle to change it, Oliver looks at it again I'm sure he changes his mind.

Wales Denmark and didn’t France get a contentious penalty?

This one was harsh but there have been a few VAR made by non English officials too.

Should have gone to the monitor no doubt, I’m surprised that this wasn’t looked at properly

It's either incompetence or someone wants Spain in the next round for the bigger audience.

The thing that gets me is the referees (assuming they are honest) fall for a player pretending he’s hurt by the tackle every time.

It’s like no one has ever pointed out to them that players will try to get other players in trouble by exaggerating.

I wouldn’t call anyone, just incompetence for me. The worse I saw at tournament though was Italy South Korea now that was dodgy

I noticed the ref quickly got the red out, f***en idiot ruined a really exciting game

Could hold out for penalties, but will take an excellent defensive display. Come on you Swiss

That foul by Laporte was worse than the red card

Shouldn’t generalise really.

Anthony Taylor was widely praised for his handling of the Christian Ericsson incident

In all seriousness why did VAR not overturn the clearly incorrect red card?

Strange, to be honest, I think Oliver needs to have a look at the monitor himself… I honestly feel he changes it to a yellow if he does

It’s subjective. It could be argued to be excessive force and dangerous so VAR will not and should not overturn it. However Oliver was really far away from the challenge and had a poor view so should have been given the opportunity to go to the monitor to decide whether he still agreed with his own subjective view with better angles. That was the point of the monitors in the first place but we haven’t seen them used properly since the 2018 World Cup. Since then they are just used for rubber stamping the VAR officials view rather than giving the on field ref a chance to review subjective calls as should have happened in this game.

Belgium or Italy will beat whoever comes out of this.

I feel the same, Spain arent going to trouble them and I can see either winning 2 or 3 nil. I feel the Swiss will be more a problem due to them being able to defend
