I don’t know if this belongs here or in the gaming section, but I rolled the dice and popped it in here. Apologies if there’s an existing board game topic. Couldn’t find one.

Board games seem to have gotten somewhat of a revival in recent years with mainstream board game cafes becoming more and more popular - certainly over here, anyway. My wife and I are well into them and I think lockdown has amplified it.

At the moment, we’re particularly enjoying Wingspan, Quacks of Quedlinburg and Patchwork. Brilliant games for 2 players and don’t take all night either. As for party games, Just One, Wavelength and The Mind are all brilliant.

What do you lot play? Would love a few recommendations

I have a board game problem, I think I own about 80+ lol

Wingspan and Quacks of Quedlinburg are two we've been playing a lot recently. Also own the mind and patchwork (great game). Never played Just One or Wavelength though.

Ticket To Ride is a really good one.

This is a great game.

Risk is a favourite of my, especially the Game of Thrones version.

Really enjoy playing Carcassonne as well.

Can’t beat a good games night with the lads.

Catan and Ticket to ride are our favourites. Also regularly play Rummikub, mankala and Chess.

Also really like quick card games like dobble, exploding kittens and we recently got No llamas which is great.

This is a timely thread - just this week I have been thinking about getting into board games as an alternative to just getting drunk in the evening :D

I've ordered Ticket to Ride and if I can figure that out then I may be bold and order Risk. Keep the recommendations coming!

Remember my dad had a great one called Escape From Colditz when I was a kid. We spent hours on it but only got about a tenth of the way through the game. lol

Have you ever completed the mind? I end up unintentionally cheating at level 7+

If you like quick two-player games, Jaipur is fantastic. Short, easy and fun.

Targi is a bit more complicated if you fancy a two-player game with a bit more depth (but still not too complex).

You’ll figure out Ticket to Ride no problem.

Carcassonne’s another good one if you’re just trying board games out. Also Pandemic, which is good and topical as well…

Ymmv, of course, but I wouldn‘t bother with Risk - it goes on for ages and isn’t really that much fun. Try Small World instead - shorter, and much more fun!

We bought ‘Cards Against Humanity’. Very very funny, but just so wrong.
The game is best played when a bit pissed.

Cards Against Humanity really is a ‘try before you buy’ game!

Loads of people enjoy it; probably just as many absolutely hate it.

Highly recommend Just One. It’s our favourite game to play when we’ve got people round. Everyone we’ve played it with has since gone on to buy it and that includes people who aren’t really into board games. I think it won Spiel des Jahres as well, which, as far as I understand, is like the board game equivalent of the oscars. It’s so simple yet so fun, especially when you’re between 5-7 players.

Don't think so! It is very dependent on who you play it with though. If I play it with my brothers we tend to do quite well, but some of my friends are a shambles lol

one of my go to board games is ALIENS (by leading edge) its hard to find a copy though as it's been out of print for quite a few years now..... and its an absolute utter bastard to play just like the movie version, am going to be introducing my 11 year old to it at some point as he loves the films.... i am going to utterly enjoy the tears that will be shed over this one :D
