Stick him next to Johnny Evans and he'd probably have looked better.

That can be said for all our centre backs.

Don't be tough on the kid, he's learning his trade and needs game time to improve.

A loan could do him the World of good.

Jesus, even John Terry had to go to a shite club like Forest to get experience.

The game had gone by this point due to the Fofana injury and the mass changes.

Not disagreeing with your opinion but it’d be unfair to judge any player on that last half hour.

Especially a lad that’s never played a competitive game.

...more than likely affected by the circumstances on the pitch...a few of the senior pros were not handling it too well!!!

It took a lot of the zip and impetus out of our game and it could not have been too easy to go on the pitch and perform. I suspect a lot of the city players would have gladly ended the game when it happened, and try to get over what they had just witnessed.

We were clearly rattled by what had occurred - which makes me even sicker to my stomach that the guy responsible was on the pitch to score their first one. It's hardly an undocumented phenomenon after witnessing trauma - a couple of months back, Denmark lost to a crap Finland team that they were all over before Eriksen's collapse. It's the galvinisation they then underwent to go on that remarkable run to the semi that I'm more bothered about - channel this energy in a positive way to "do it for Wes" and it may hopefully give our lads an extra motivation to go out there and make a solid start to the season.

As for the second goal, absolute brainfart from all involved coupled with the ref having seemingly blown his whistle but shrugging off his own decision.

All told, I don't blame Ben one bit for a comfortable 3-0 becoming a 3-2. I'm happy to judge him on his overall showing in pre-season, and I've been pleasantly surprised by him. As others have alluded to, while we do suddenly find ourselves in a crisis at Centre Back (with some on here seriously calling for Morgan to be dragged out of retirement for one more season amongst other duck-tape fixes), I think it'd be unfair to throw him completely in at the deep end alongside Cags. If it was Evans there, maybe, but I'm not yet convinced that Soyuncu is the sort of natural calming influence a young'un like Nelson needs if he's to hit the ground running, though we all know on his day he's one of the best defenders in the league.

With that in mind, a loan in the Championship or League One, at a club where game time is fairly certain, is the best thing that could happen for him. Between Barnes and now Dewsbury-Hall, it's being proven that it's a genuine route into first team contention for us. If he does well and, god forbid, we're still clawing around for a suitable pairing by January, call him back by all means. I do feel like Benkovic is doing enough this pre-season to justify being one of the options, so I'm not against persisting with him alongside Soyuncu for the first half of the season if we can't get someone like Kabak in before kick off against Wolves.

The real question is: is anywhere so desperate for a centre back that they're willing to gamble on a 17 year old kid? Apart from us now, obviously... lol

Difficult one to judge. He was playing in a back 3 which we are a car crash at at times anyway, in a pre-season friendly where there'd just been a horrific injury and subsequently 6 subs I think. Both goals were offside and both not Nelson's fault anyway.

He'd looked very capable in the previous friendlies and I know the club are preparing for him to have a huge future here so it's a work in progress and last night has very little bearing on his short, medium or long term future I'd have thought. Yes, he's theoretically 1 defender up the queue now in first team football here but even with my maverick opinions it would be some surprise if Rodgers really did throw him in at the start of this season.

Would be sensational for a 17yr old academy player to make his competitive debut at Wembley v Manchester

He won’t start ahead of amartey or benkovic

The community shield isn’t actually classed as a competitive game

And yet in some circles it's classed as a major trophy.

It's only ever a major trophy when one of the greedy ESL clubs win it.

I remember the media dismissing the League Cup as virtually worthless in 2000. However, it was back as a major trophy the following year when Liverpool won it.

If we win it's a major trophy, if we lose, it's a pre-season friendly, we are using for fitness.....

Where did we get this lad from then? Did we pluck from a Scottish academy?

Northampton, I can see Ben being fast tracked into the senior squad by 19 y.o.. You know when all fit our CB options are not too bad. Its just the experience-youth balance that's a problem.

Born in Northampton but been at our academy since 9 or 10 years old. Scottish ancestry so eligible for Scotland and England.

Ah didn’t know that. My quick googling just said he’s Scottish, so I assumed we poached him from Roath Ravers or Hamilton Academical

Need to get this thread back up the pages (at least for now based on recent squad pictures).  I think this lad has real qualities and is still very young.  Only just turned 19 in March.

With a likely back 3 we will need a good group of solid CB in the squad, so could this be the chance he's got to properly wear the City shirt and push on with his career?

As one of ours, if he's good enough, lets hope he can 🤞

Let hope we now have a manager who embrace youth!

I'm sure he will in equal measure. If he sees a future star then there will be no better time than now in the second division. Ease him in as opposed to throwing him in in the Premier. Good look lad.
