Imagine explaining to yourself on that day at Stoke that the thirteen years that preceded it - play off final wins, League Cup wins, consistent mid table Premier League finishes, UEFA Cup trips and another promotion - would be superseded by the coming thirteen years in which we’d win League One, the Championship, The ****ing Premier League, the FA Cup, the Community Shield, play in the Champions League once and JUST miss out on it twice more, all while breaking club and WORLD transfer records. AND THEN that the biggest and richest clubs in Europe would be so ****ing scared of you that they’d repeatedly break rules and set up their own private league just to protect their earnings. 
 

I’m honestly so worried that one day I’ll wake up to the FIFA08 idle screen with Leicester 1-0 up against Barcelona in the Champions League final 2023 (Messi og).

Absolutely my fault for being so convinced we’d go all the way in that competition, but that night used to rank up there as being amongst the most miserable away games I’d been at. Touch wood nothing ever comes close to Stoke the day we were relegated, though.

 

Miserable probably isn’t the right word in fairness, but I was really gutted because at that age and at that time, I was certain that it was going to be the only way I’d see us play at Wembley. Having been too young through the late 90s and then didn’t start going to games regularly until the final season at Filbert Street, Play Offs and League Cup Finals had just passed me by. If I’d only known though, eh?

Under O’Neil we thought that was as good as it gets, brilliant but only ever one bad decision by the board away from disaster, as it showed.

 

what’s happening now is phenomenal, a squad with such depth it can comfortable withstand star players leaving or getting injured (though last season pushed it a bit) A club so well ran that we’re completely unrecognisable from the one in the 90s.
