When I was at Uni we had to do sport bulletin broadcasts as if we had 15 seconds on 5 Live to update you from “around the grounds” - we’d been listening to Conor MacNamara as examples before doing our own - so I ended up doing mine in the same style as him…..probably shouldn’t have done the Irish accent though.

Derm Tanner was my lecturer for that part of my course. Now he’s a broadcaster. Top bloke. West Ham fan, but you can’t have it all.

Derm's a great bloke, fine broadcaster.

I was at the traffic lights next to him and I guess Owynn in their Radio Leicester car on the way to Wembley.

He had the window down fully, in the passenger seat singing Oasis at the top of his voice. He then turned to us and started singing pretending he was holding a microphone in his hand.

One of the most bizarre parts of the day.

Told us some unbelievable stories from his time covering Bradford City and of other managers from the football league.

Clearly I may be in the minority here but I think he's a great bloke and a decent commentator. I much prefer the RL shows now compared to the 'moan-in' it used to be (although that also might be in part due to the club's successes!).

The football forum podcasts are the most downloaded show on BBC Sounds for local radio so clearly they must be doing something right!

From the few times I've talked to him either in person or social media he always seems friendly & genuinely interested in talking to you.

As others have said, if you try listening to other local commentary stations on a matchday, they're dross in comparison and lack the enthusiasm for the club that clearly all 3 on RL have!

I can only speak from personal experiences can’t I? Just a few months back I was coming out of the club shop and he’d been into the club. Pulled over, told me to get in and he’d drop me wherever I was going even though it was out of his way. What a ****.

I’ve met him a few times and have been on the show, he’s a decent guy in real life. I can see why he would annoy people though. Also does anyone not remember Jon Barber? He was awful.

Awful? Nah he wasn’t that good. Stringers covered us for over ten years now so he must be doing something right.

Stringer is nice bloke as is pipes but there professionalism on the radio is terrible. The amount of times they break out of topic and act childish is just poor. When it was Stringer and yougee or Elliott, the radio show was proper good. Now its like stringers and piper's happy hour.

Time for a change BBC RL

I was going to say this but you beat me to it.

The 'phone in' format on a local level is just dreadful (606 is bad enough, and the less said about Talk Sport the better).

He might be a nice chap off the radio, but I can only judge him on what I hear. My IPTV was playing up last season and I had to listen to him a couple of times. What an arse hole.

Wasn't he (Barber) a Derby fan?

he needs to let the football be the start and stop trying to make it the Ian Stringer show featuring the football, his interviews with Rodgers are good, though Rodgers loves a microphone himself

I know Ian and can only say nice things about him. Hes been great to me.

Criticise him as a broadcaster fine, call him a bellend, etc and it says far more about you than it does about him.

Peak Stringer for me was when he was commentating and Mendy intercepted the ball and he started singing the chorus to "Sound Of Da Police" (Whoop Whoop that's the sound of da police).

Least he was talking about the game and not hats, seagulls and sandwiches.

Probably gonna be in the minority here but he’s actually a decent bloke, of course he won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, just like me and you won’t be. How many of you know him on a personal level? Whenever we bump into each other, he’s always got time to talk, asks about your well-being & family etc.

I can bet my life that most people saying he’s this that and the other are just making their perception of him from what they hear over the radio.

Spend ten minutes or so with the bloke and you’ll see he’s not as bad as you think.

My experience of him is exactly the same. My dad had a bout of I'll health recently and he's constantly checking up on him. I really appreciate it.

As I said before this thread says a lot more about the people saying stuff than about him.

Of course they are, but if you act all 'bantersaurus rex', I'm sure he's aware it's going to be marmite for a lot of people.

...he needs to change the format of the program!!!

You continue to roll out the same tired old show and you are going to get a tired audience.

He does come across  as self indulgent and does make things about himself.  Owen has fallen a bit unlucky, because he hasn't got a professional broadcaster to learn from or to be mentored by, and therefore getting dragged into Stringers poor jokes and offbeat world.

Matt Piper started off poorly but has an honest truth about him and is endearing in that respect. He became better and more polished and last season he was doing well.

He seems, from the last few shows I have heard, to be regressing to how he first started, and I feel it could be that after a certain amount of time you can have so much of Stringer, and he seems to have become weary, and I forsee this team will not be together for much longer.

His side kick Owen Palter Atkison or whatever his name is really tries hard to replicate the way Stringer delivers his sentences, almost like he is trying hard to copy his style and bad one liners.

I don't know whether anyone else has picked up on this. He should try and get a style to suit himself rather than copy someone elses

In Owynn Palmer-Atkin's defence, I'm pretty sure it's his first gig on the radio and if you're working closely with someone for a significant length of time (especially someone your senior), you may start to imitate them subconsciously and it would take a great deal of effort and self-awareness to row that back.

In Stringer's defence too, you can't argue that he's not passionate about the club and his job. He has my dream job and I respect him for that. I find him sometimes entertaining, sometimes cheesy and sometimes a pain in the backside. Nobody is going to be everyone's cup of tea, but he isn't the complete prat some on here are making him out to be. He does a lot of good charity work too.

Nobody is denying the fact that 99% of listeners only know who he is because of his voice on the radio, either.
