What a game and what a goal. Should never have been a sending off and yet still they made a great game of it. I don’t know why people don’t like the Afcon. Its entertaining.

I think most don't like the AFCON because they don't like losing key players in the middle of the season. Also the quality is so bad. Other than the few players that play in the top European leagues, the rest are awful! That goal by Comoros was a bit special though

Couldn't disagree more mate lol, we're not talking about san marino or lichtenstein the quality is there. Sure the coaches and tactics aren't the best always but there's always competition regardless of wherever they play. People play on another level in their continent and for their nations, when they hold true to their hearts... And the young players that can be un earthed from afcon is notable as well. Just look at the goalkeeper of Comoros, salim ben boina, or Mohamed kamara of Sierra leone. There's real quality and unearthed gems.

News of the stampede is shocking and very very sad. Thought are with them 🙏🏻

May their souls rest in peace 🙏❤️. Horrible news. Feel for the victims and their families. No one should die for watching football.

Fair enough mate but the games I've watched have been pretty low quality. Having said that though, a fair few of the big names haven't really done alot in this tournament.

Mendy is clearly a good player in the right system. Brendan just doesn’t want to play him in his current set up. Shame because he was so good when called upon last season. Still Senegal making hard work of this and if mane is out now they will struggle in the next round assuming they hold out here against nine men.

I always thought Mendy was frenchlol

Born and raised in France, played in the French youth teams, parents are Senegalese and declared for them not that long ago as he originally turned them down as he wanted to play for France, probably realised he wouldn’t ever get that call up

What's with all the red cards in this tournament?

nearly every challenge that has been above the ankle has ended up a red card ......... i guess its consistent but it doesn't allow for any margin of error from the tackler - it seems intent is irrelevant in this tournament

Crazy how footballers (and other sports) can choose their sporting nationality. It's been said for years the rules need tightening. Makes a mockery of internationals when a player can qualify due to a grandparent (I'm obviously not referring to Mendy in this case).

Senegalese origin same as boubakary soumare, he'll probably play for Senegal as well if he's smart.

....can't say that I can agree with that!!!

The grandparent is still part of his lineage, If someone asked me what nationality I am, I would look to my grandparent. I do not understand how people do not know their nationality from something like 7 years old.

You have 4 grandparents and 2 parents. If 3 of those grandparents are English as are both parents, and you were born and raised in England, I'd say that you are English (I'm thinking Andy King, here).

Mendy more rated there than here. Sad. I'd keep him for now and shift hamza to cb.

Probably a good chance he will get registered in the Prem squad with Benkovic gone, us very unlikely to sign anyone, and him unlikely to get a move whilst away at AFCON

It most certainly is not.

The games are often competitive and the players clearly naturally skillful.

Tactics, officiating, and general organization might be a bit sketchy though.

Passports are political constructs.

No more authentic than biological lineage.

What if one parent is one nationality and the other is another nationality? Would it then be a free choice to pick? Most of the time you can have two passports but if you had to choose one, it's 50/50.

Mendy played well yesterday, barring one comically bad pass straight out of play.

He really is a solid player.

In some games, Liverpool away for example, we could have a double screen of Mendy and Ndidi in front of a back four.

Not against having two holding midfielders, against the right opposition.

To be fair, we can't comment on officiating in other countries when it's a complete shambles in the PL at the moment but yeh I'd agree with what you're saying
