Our season died in Rome.

Today, the forum is more dour than ever.

We lost to a poor team who gifted us a goal.

At the start of the season, it looked like we might have our strongest squad ever.

Injuries, referees, VAR and fixture congestion did us few favours

Bit we have been poor.  Conceding a corner feels like conceding a goal.   We fail to beat limited teams.

Two Champions League near misses. The FA Cup.  And then, this season.

Next season is pivotal.

Excuses.

Excuses.

I should have added that we have recently failed to beat limited teams.  Suggesting we have major limitations.

Those excuses are a reality.   As is our poor season.

You're right about the corners for example. But that sentence I picked out is just full of excuses. Yes, injuries but referees, VAR etc etc. Not really. On some occasions yes maybe. But no real effect. Just piss poor selection, play and tactics at the end of the day.

The excuses, as you call them, are real factors.

But I followed it with we have been poor.  We have thrown games away.

it just makes the whole of football seam pointless to me when we have nothing to play for. I usually watch every game i can of other teams in the prem and extended highlights of the ones i can’t. But i’ve been blah to it for the most part other than a keen interest in the relegation battle. But not only have we ruined our season we’ve ruined everyone else’s by saving everton.

It must be so boring being a southampton or palace fan. Really hope this is just a one off for us. Because genuinely, the hope of each season possibly being a push for the playoffs in the championship is way better than what they get served each season.

I always start fm in lower leagues and fight to climb to the prem, once i get there i tend to get bored as the gap to the top is usually too huge… i worry that is where we end up as a club.

give me the extra games and real competition anytime over an away day at liverpool, i just don’t care about that.

The fans of the clubs listed are either performing  better then expected (CP) or in Soton case they at least do look good in games but lack the quality. There own fans having reality at times where they are.

with ourselves should we not be aiming higher?

if so, then as fans I think we can feel annoyed that it’s been really really poor

I think it's the style of football we play more than the fact we have nothing to play for. Also more times than not over the past decade we've been competing for something which also makes this year feel so disappointing.

I agree. You can take a 3-2 loss or some Alamoesque defending a lot easier if you haven't just watched 85 odd minutes of passing it around at the back and 5 minutes of inept defending from corners.

Get used to it. I fear we will "rebuild" ourselves into mediocrity, as long as Rodgers is at the helm. He's run his race.

I don't trust him with a rebuild and at the same time, fear changing the manager for this summer would be too much. I might be in the minority but I fear next season, teams around us are building and seem to have upward trajectory whereas we seem stagnant.

The run of recent poor league results plus losing in Rome have made things worse. The Everton match was a chance to reset and we blew it. I would imagine Man C fans are feeling a lot better after smashing Newcastle. If somehow we can produce a few wins to end the season I will feel better. Worried though we are on the slide.  I never assume we will do better than the previous season. If we not  let so many points slip from winning and had another 3 or 4 wins I might be reflecting and say hey ho not too bad.

After the champions league winning season I thought we'd basically do what Palace are doing now before eventually getting relegated however we'd had a league cup semi final, 2 european adventures and of course the FA Cup.

With the right recruitment and manager we can have some highs in the future and challenge for the european places again.

I don’t get why everyone thinks it’s the end of the world, and being all doom and gloom?

Cheer up, we’ll be back stronger next season.

Kicking the can down the road?

We were going to be OK once all our players were back fit 🙊

I'm Brendan out too, but basing anything on the Xg stat is not correct. It's a shitty stat and needs sacking off ASAP.

I don't like it either but it shows how we've been bailed out by over performing strikers, who have recently stopped over perforning.

I hear this alot, along with "we have a top training ground", both true, but getting back up to speed, getting the team to settle back to this norm, reaping the rewards from the new training ground, all takes time, that along with the huge drop in confidence due our horrific temp defence, has meant we have been exceptionally poor.

We end the season hoping we aren't relegated - that's shocking and we can't blame injuries, VAR or congestion.  Too many games have been played with apathy, comical defending and some quite baffling lineups/substitutions/formations.  These are all to do with management - I'm not sure where I am on BR but he has to shoulder the responsibility for the season and it has been below par.

We've moved to a more possession based style of play but without the cutting edge to get use that possession to create chances.  Our wide play does not seem to create chances with players beating their defender and cutting balls back in - a highly probably way of scoring.

Vardy's unavailability isn't the issue as more possession and his age means we are moving away from his strength - Kelechi and Patson are different and need chances created for them in the way Vardy does not.

Defensively we have been shambolic and I include Kasper in that as well as our lack of centre back depth - if anything Kasper's retreated to his line even more gifting chances at every set piece.

I think we have real problems going into next season - something needs to be enlivened at the Club, not just new signings (new signings of late have not been good either).

I can't be arsed to get on bus, train and walk to go to the Norwich game, that's how meh I'm feeling at the moment.

You forgot to add the clueless manager into the mix
