The pitch will be fine

It's a new pitch. You don't know that.

They should be playing at the training ground at best. They've not earned nor do they play like professional footballers.

We were the better team on balance 1st half but couldn't convert the advantage into goals. We simply lack anyone that can score at the moment. O'Brien did her best but she's arguably wasted upfront. The spirit and enthusiasm is there, and they can play a bit in patches, but it's missing cohesion, speed on the ball and quick passing. Villa were the better side overall and deserving winners.

It's disappointing as these are the games we want to be winning.

Pub team football can play better than this. Be interesting to know the profit margin the women's team are working to especially on match day of setting the stadium and paying for the emergency services and other staff etc.

Also hope it doesn't dent the pitch wear and tear itself as the main team need it more amd it's brand new.

I`m thinking the womens game is not for you. :P

And by the end of the season?

The ladies played 7 league games at the king power last season

The men played 7 European homes games last year, so, minus that even if the ladies play all 11 league games at home that's still 3 less games then last season pitch.

Between now and the end of the season the women's team are only going to be using it 8 more times.

There is also about a 7 week period in November/December where it gets used once.

Our grounds team are more than good enough to keep it in top condition.

and it won't get played on much during November December, the women have a winter break and men have the world cup break, that's when most of the damage would occur due to the weather

Don’t worry about the pitch. Soon the ball won’t be touching the ground, when the Dyche revolution comes into town.

Leicester have focussed too much on getting things right off the pitch and overlooked the need to sign decent players.  Recruitment has been poor since promotion.  I don't think a single Leicester player would get in the Villa side, and Villa will only be mid-table by the end of the season.

O'Brien looked good when running forward with the ball but back to goal she doesn't have it, that's fine she's a winger/attacking mid not a striker.

Cain who is really good is the same and Paul, Sigsworth works hard but didn't seem the most composed but all 3 are coming back from ACLs I think. The biggest problem is the system, drop one of the back 3 and play Flint who at least can be physical with O'Brien and another winger and hope Willie Kirk can find a free agent striker and keeper

We was ok first half, but really poor second half and didnt get going.  Villa didnt look much better either but were more clinical in front of goal with the few chances that they had.  There is no way we stay up this season with the strikers we have, and also we are playing too much sidewards and backwards, which slows everything down.  I think they`ve been watching too much of our mens Rodgers ball, and folowing suit.

Got to say, im really disappointed in Natasha Flint, she was really decent in the championship when ever i saw us play, and i thought she was one that would make the step up to the WSL, but shes no where near the standard.  Quite liked the look of Green in midfield, Jones was ok, but held onto the ball too long at times. Simon was decent in an attacking sense in the first half, probably a little unlucky to be dragged off, O`Brien worked hard, and is a better option than Flint, but she isnt a striker. All in all, it`s already very difficult to see how this team stays up this season, without a Birmingham standard side to battle with.

Absolutely nothing has changed from last season really, granted they are keeping the ball a bit better but it’s just possession for possessions sake as there’s absolutely nothing going forwards with any purpose. They don’t look like scoring and have very few shots on target.

The goal keeper and defensive is still pretty much the same that leaked all those goals last season, the midfield cannot keep the ball and the strikers just don’t ever look like scoring or get the opportunity to. The signings apart from Josie Green haven’t really improved the first team IMO, Jones has some nice touches but like most of them lacks any real pace to get away from anybody.

...they have had all this time to assess what they needed and yet we are back where we started, with no pace and weak individually and poor ball skills!!!

Hard to understand why we are going out picking up all these players from around the league and they bring the same shortcomings to the table. If you are going to press, you have to get together, O'Brien doing shuttle runs against 3 CBs is not helping anyone, and once they get past that, the midfield is too easily bypassed.

Plumptre needs to back herself, the further she goes up the pitch you can see she becomes unsure of herself. A lot went through her in the first half, she needs to try and get to grip with the players around her. Potential to be a leader.

Maddison, Barnes, Justin and Vardy don’t get in at Villa?

Thanks. I heard that the women's game in the WSL was stretching well into double digits over the season? Don't quote me, just FT talk from a while ago.

Strange set up today. All the fans squashed into one corner of one stand. Had the misfortune to be sat with lots of Villa fans around us. The idea of all the fans sitting with each other is great in theory but less enjoyable in reality. Particularly when we are losing and the away fans are Villa fans! The LCFC team are definitely better than last year but still relegation fodder. Lots of big crosses but no tall strikers. Don’t create much and seemed reluctant to shoot. A bit like the men’s team!

I agree Green looked good.

I think it was Green, I'm not familiar with the new players yet, but they did look a decent addition but perhaps tried to do too much, took one too many touches. In general, we understandably got a bit rushed and hopeful towards the end. There needs to be a little more composure. It'll come.

Villa Beat The Foxes In WSL
LCFC WOMEN
Aston Villa defeated LCFC Women 2-0 in the Barclays Women’s Super League at King Power Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
BySam Jones at King Power Stadium

Goals from Rachel Daly and Emily Gielnik at either end of the match secured a win for the visitors on Filbert Way and consigned Leicester to a second successive loss.

Just one change was made to the starting XI by manager Lydia Bedford from the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend with Shannon O’Brien introduced from the off and Natasha Flint dropping to the bench.

It was a nightmare start for the hosts as Villa were awarded a spot-kick just two minutes in. Erin Simon was adjudged to have taken out Kirsty Hanson in the penalty area, leaving England international Daly to step up and convert from 12 yards, finding the bottom corner after sending Kirstie Levell the wrong way.

Leicester responded well to the set back, though, with O'Brien heading wide from Jemma Purfield's free-kick. Simon got to the byline soon after, pulling the ball back across goal for O'Brien, but the forward glanced a first-time effort wide.

The chances continued to fall for the England Under-23 international as she won possession back high up and curled a shot narrowly past the far post, before seeing a shot blocked, as did Carrie Jones.

Villa's first opportunity since the goal saw Alisha Lehmann utilise her pace down the right, cutting inside and unleashing a low shot that was comfortable for Levell to claim in the final action of the first half.

Leicester came out with intent in the second period and, from Purfield's free-kick, fashioned an early chance. The set piece was punched away by Hampton, but only out to Josie Green, whose effort was charged down.

At the other end, Danielle Turner's free-kick was tipped onto the crossbar by City's shot-stopper. A Villa counter-attack then saw Daly's cross-field ball eventually find Maz Pacheco, but the full-back blazed her strike well wide.

A triple substitution was made by Bedford on 70 minutes to try and turn the game in the home side's favour, with Natasha Flint, CJ Bott and Demi Vance all coming on, the latter for her debut.

But it was the Villans who suddenly looked more likely to score. Former Foxes loanee Freya Gregory had a shot saved by Levell, ahead of Kenza Dali finding space to take aim but again seeing the ex-Everton 'keeper in the way. She was not called into action from Hanson's cross, though, which Daly headed off target.

Flint started to have an impact on the game as it moved towards the final 10 minutes, showing strength to muscle her way into a crossing position, picking out Carrie Jones, who diverted the ball wide.

Another opportunity fell to Green with five to play, seeing Hannah Hampton off her line and attempting to lob the Villa 'keeper, who got back to keep the hosts at bay.

The game was wrapped up in the 87th minute. Dali played through substitute Gielnik and the Australian forward made no mistake in finding the back of the net, with a touch from Levell only able to help the ball on its way into the bottom corner.

After Missy Goodwin replaced Molly Pike, City continued to push for a goal and Green's cross looked to have been headed in by Howard but for an impressive diving save from Hampton to thwart her and end any hope of a late comeback.

Major moment…
The Foxes captain battles with Sarah Mayling during the first half on Filbert Way.

City dominated the first half following Rachel Daly's third minute penalty and were unfortunate to be behind at the break. They were not able to fashion many clear-cut chances in the second 45, however, and a late second ensured the points would be Villa's.

Where do we stand?
There was little to separate the sides throughout the 90 minutes.

Following matchday two, City are 11th in the top-flight standings, yet to pick up a point in 2022/23.

Coming up...
City play twice next week, starting with a trip to face the Toffees.

It's a quick turnaround for the Foxes with Everton away up next in the WSL on Thursday 29 September, a 6:30pm kick-off at Walton Hall Park.

The details…

City: Levell; Simon (Vance 70'), Howard, Tierney, Plumptre, Purfield (Bott 70'); Pike (Goodwin 88'), Green, Whelan (c); Jones, O'Brien (Flint 70').

Subs not used: Poor, Scofield, E. Jones, Baker.
