With the retained list announced and loans ending, this is the current state of our squad

The below list also includes those players from our development squad who are now too old to be classed as under 21 - born on or after 1st January 2001 - and so if we wanted to use them would have to be registered

*Luke Thomas is still classed as under 21 and therefore would not take up a spot in the 25 man squad

Goalkeepers: Schmeichel, Ward, Iversen, Stolarczyk

Right backs: Pereira, Castagne

Centre backs: Fofana, Evans, Soyuncu, Amartey, Vestergaard, Brunt

Left backs: Justin, Thomas*, Bertrand

Defensive mids: Ndidi, Mendy, Choudhury

Centre mids: Tielemans, Dewsbury-Hall, Praet, Soumare, Wright

Attacking mids: Maddison, Suengchitthawon, Leshabela

Right wingers: Perez, Albrighton

Left wingers: Barnes

Strikers: Vardy, Iheanacho, Daka, Eppiah, Hirst

Of that group Suengchitthawon, Leshabela, Eppiah, and Stolarczyk have no chance of making the 25-man squad; I would say Brunt, Wright, and Hirst are very long shots. Praet is mostly out the door... Supposedly open for offers on Soyuncu, Perez, Hamza, Soumare, and Vesty.. Tielemans up in the air, some rumors that Amartey might move north. Who knows about Mendy. And frankly, I am sure Bertrand wouldn't mind playing out his contract with the U23s as he "recovers from injury."

I will say, if I was an under 21 youth player, I would be really aiming to impress in case some dross can't be moved...

I would be very surprised if Brunt did not get a place in the 25.

BR rates him very highly and unless he gets a loan which seems unlikely I expect him to be in the 25.

Several senior members of last seasons squad have already been told there is no place for them so unless they cut their losses and accept a pay cut somewhere a few could be rotting away training with the kids week in week out with no prospect of playing for 12 momths.

Any idea who they are?

When Amartey’s contract expires I can see Brunt taking over as the versatile squad option. His ability to play CB and DM will be useful.

Easing him into the squad this season makes sense.

Weren't there rumors Amartey might be heading to Forest?

I don't think we will keep Ward and Iverson so Stolarczyk around as 3rd choice for emergencies unless there is an under 21 keeper we could call upon.

Obviously depends if anyone is signed but I'd be surprised if any of the youngsters are named apart from Brunt (could be Mendy replacement) and Wright.

Brunt ideally needs a loan, he's played so little professional football and at 21 he could hugely benefit from a year in either the Championship or League One. He'd be lucky to make 5 appearances for us next season which I don't see what the point is and as he has to be named in the 25 man squad due to his age its even harder to keep him around. What I have seen of him though has impressed me, I don't think as a centre half in a back 4 though that he's as good as Ben Nelson will be.

I do wonder what the 5 subs change does to change the calculus. Although, for youth that would involve bringing them on when the game is in hand, which happened [checks notes] a total of 0 times (😳)  by the 60th minute last season.

So from that bloated squad and shifting a fair bit of deadwood, my perfect transfer window would look something this

Goalkeepers: Schmeichel, Iversen, Young*

Right backs: Pereira, Castagne

Centre backs: Fofana, Evans, Amartey, New SigningNelson*

Left backs: Justin, Thomas*

Defensive mids: Ndidi, Mendy

Centre mids: Tielemans (with contract extension), Dewsbury-Hall, New Signing, Soumare, Wright, Braybrooke*

Attacking mids: Maddison, Alves*

Right wingers: Perez, Albrighton New Signing

Left wingers: Barnes, New Signing - Lookman

Strikers: Vardy, Iheanacho, Daka,

Leave either loan or ideally permanent

Ward, Soyuncu, Vestergaard, Bertrand, Choudhury, Praet, Leshabela, Hirst, Eppiah

Leave on loan

Stolarczyk, Brunt, Suengchitthawon

Sheez, this looks almost prescient (I mean, without the new signings, and swap Stolarczyk for Iverson.)

I expect Perez to go, though, but Wright to move to RW.

Today was a reminder that we have a squad that is strong in some areas.

Choudhury must be on his way out, not making either 11 despite Ndidi not being available.   I suspect the legend Albrighton would be allowed to go although I hope he stays

I would rather keep Praet than Soumare.

I have got to the stage where I want Soyuncu to go.

Is it possible that Wright might be better than what we might buy.  Perez should be moved on.

Stolarczyk has looked better that Iversen in the two games.

Braybrooke looks like he could be used.

I don't think we need many players.   A wide player and a centre back could be all we need.

The tricky bit it trimming 6+ players from the wage bill.j

Can you explain why we haven’t seen Brunt then with the first team or the under 23 squad? Utter mystery

The 5 subs is a major change, I aint up to doing the calculus on how it effects the squad this year though

Man City might choose to transform to perfect new beast on 60 minutes but any team can put on an entire new attack, midlield or defence. Tactically aware and versatile players on the pitch will help managers counter opposition changes and allow their subs to be used more pro actively-. A long term coaching and recruitment thing

However, I think this season Leicester should use the 5 subs to develop young players so we are aware of what is required next season. That could be our rebuild ?

I think a lot of managersauruses will go extinct this season. If Brendan is not considering new approaches, he is for the mud pit.

eg

Start a young player knowing that he will be coming off at half time. No shame in being hooked and less pressure to perform if it is pre arranged.

Perhaps even start Iverson on the understanding he is replaced if and when a goal is conceeded, regardless of fault.  I prefer that to treating cup games as trials

Very, very weak in wide positions and midfield especially if Youri goes as much speculated.

I can see him going in the last week of window and we won’t have time to get a replacement in. If we keep Praet then that will reduce the impact of Youri going.

Still say that's good on paper. Problem is, it's littered with players who want out or are a year off leaving for free. Then a couple of choppers. RW the obvious weakness.
