Broadband/TV Package

Recommended Posts

Right, my BT contract is up next month and I'm sick of paying more and more each year for minimal use except the Internet. I don't need a landline telephone, I don't need any TV package particularly as got a Smart TV and now we are the pits again I don't need BT Sport.

Any recommendations for reliable broadband and WiFi that I cam get that'd reasonably priced?

I pay £82 a month with sky. I get all the channels except kids, free Netflix, telephone line through them, broadband fast 60 odd meg and booster boxes in the house. I also have 2 mobiles with them with 5gig of data for another tenner a month. It’s not perfect not cheap particularly but the box is good and has all the apps on it as my tv is smart but ten years old.

i watch BT sport in a laptop through my mates Virgin set up access and he watches sky through my sky go.

Dunno if that helps but that’s where I’m at.

If you don’t need a tv package and your in a virgin media area then there isn’t really a better deal that I know of then this, bonus if your on o2 contract/pay monthly sim only and virgin media in the same name at the same address, broadband get moved up to the next tier and you get double data on you mobile contract free of charge

here’s the link and the info

https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/compare-broadband-deals/tip-3244

It's £23.95/mth for broadband & line rental, but you get automatic £100 bill credit from Virgin Media added to your account.

Factor that in and it's £331.10 over the 18mth contract, equivalent to £18.39/mth.

I pay about £28 a month all in for PlusNet. Can’t recommend it enough.

You can also switch on BT sport whenever you like and cancel when you like for £10 or £15 a month if you like. Was great for when Leicester were in Europe….

I do the Plusnet thing for low twenties, think £22/23 with BT Sport a tenner which can be turned on and off at any point, soo off for close season with 30 days notice, they have Prem rugby too for Tigers.  Also vendors like Shell do Fibre for less than £20 per month, v cheap and competitive out there at minute.

Don't know on Sky, but I pay under £35 for basic + Sports.

Find alternative pricing thats competitive and haggle.  For sky for example, say you will leave, play chicken and 1-2 weeks later they will ring you back and make a great offer.

As above look at moneysavings expert, he emphasises haggling.

Can also recommend PlusNet. Fantastic provider, UK call centres and good price/service. Pay about £25 for fibre. No TV, no landline, no extras.

Depends what's in your area tbh, I can only get fibre through virgin so have to go with them unless I want to go back in time 10 years.

There's a good deal with them atm which someone has listed above.

If your phone contract is with 02, worth bearing in mind you can Volt up your broadband and phone contract for free.

For everyones info, they are phasing out landline telephone - most of the installations now don't have the ability to use a landline as its all going via the internet. So anyone pay line rental etc, get onto your provider.

It's the whole copper infrastructure. So along with the traditional landline functionality going, broadband services such as ADSL and FTTC will also be stopped.

If you’re in a good 5G area, I’d recommend 3’s 5G hub. £24 a month, one month rolling contract. We’ve got a shedload of devices connected in our gaff and we get 250mb upload without breaking a sweat.

PLUS it’s not a wired connection so no engineer/openreach bollocks. Just plug and play you are literally online in 2 minutes from getting it out the box.

That's what killed me - deal with Virgin came to an end and shopping around I could only really stay with virgin or have max of 50mbps internet which probably wouldn't suffice on those occasions when I'm working from home, kids are gaming and the wife is watching netflix.

Absolute farce initially when trying to negotiate with them. Offered slower internet for more money, then they snuck sky cinema into the package for £5 a month without telling me..... in the end asked to speak to someone else and got a better deal. The clown who I initially spoke to even forgot to mute his mic and spoke aloud when typing up his referral notes saying what he had offered me already. All full of lies and so was quite an easy win when I pointed that out to the next person!

Like oil and gas this is what the broadband companies wouldn't want you to know if you're lucky to live in a 5G area. I presume it would knock back to 4G when it needs to so you could take it with you where ever you go.

I presume that's unlimited DL with no "fair use" rubbish?

I believe so yeah, I have no complaints tbf it’s a great bit of kit.

Yeah unlimited DL and contract wording is just the same as you get with wired connections. Can’t fault them so far….so I imagine I’ll have an outage this weekend now and I won’t be able to watch the match. Although that might be a good thing!

I've currently got BT Fibre 100 Halo 1 which expires next month. The WiFi and broadband overall has been very reliable and I think is a bit quicker than the best PlusNet but just checking whether the best one will still give me everything I need.

I work from home most of the week but my home office is in an outbuilding so I have to create a mobile WiFi using TP Link adapters as the router is in the house so just cautious that the speed needs to be decent as I've my laptop, devices and TV out thrre and I'm very clueless on stuff like this.

Hmm, your 'outbuilding'... I now have an image in my mind Ric of some kind of wooden-built transfer control left-footed right-(s)winging porn facility.

I’m with virgin. Great price 200mb broadband basic tv package for £28pm. also get a boost on my O2 data plan as well, which helped.

But Virgins router is terrible. Signal strength weak at a distance and cuts out. Replaced it with a third party and it’s loads better. BT’s equipment is much better. Never had an issue all the way through lockdown. Only switched as we moved and it was a great deal.

Just looked at this pal, I can only get 4G but the speeds still look like they rival/better my BT Fibre 100 Halo. My only question which you might not be able to answer is, I use TP Link adapters to take my WiFi connection from my Halo router in the house via the electric circuit (plugs) and extend it to an outhouse on the same electric circuit 20 meters down the garden and it works faultlessly. Not sure if there'd be any reason why this wouldn't work for a 4G hub rather than a fibre broadband router?
