Tbh I prefer Dagger's approach of 'i think it's all bollocks and if you don't like that then suck it up' compared to the posters trying to convince themselves you can say some things but should not do other things. Comes across as slightly hypocritical. It's similar to the debates about offensive words last week - offence is totally in the eye of the offendee. I think the issue for me is that aggressive people are seemingly allowed to up the importance of an issue by being threatening and encouraging violence and instead of cutting that out the police appear to see their role as one of mediator. 1

Yes this is the main issue, everything else is irrelevant really. My point is more that we can't say objectively what is acceptable and unacceptable when it comes to the feelings of religious people. 1

It’s that they ascribe far less importance to the first ‘wrong’ than to the second. If the book in question were the Bible, the Torah, the Bhagavad Gita or the Guru Granth Sahib, this very likely wouldn’t even be a story. The reason it has become a story is because this one group of religious fanatics have reacted with violent threats. For most people, the point is that in the UK you cannot threaten to kill children because they were messing about with a book, irrespective of what that book is. This is not a theocratic state and we do not have blasphemy laws here. We are not compelled to scrape and bow in front of religious lunatics. They must accept that they do not live in a country where you can be killed for scuffing a book. If they want to live in a country where that happens, they are welcome to move to one. Reports into the Muslim rape gangs in northern towns have concluded that they were able to get away with it for so long because the police and social services were terrified of upsetting the Muslim community and being accused of racism. The police’s response to this incident has demonstrated similar level of cowardice. You seem to believe that we should go out of our way to avoid upsetting zealous maniacs from a particular religion. Others believe it is far more important to stand up to such fanaticism. They’re not ‘missing the point’. You're right that if it was any other book/religion it wouldn't be a story but naïve if you believe that there wouldn't be outrage and potential violent threat if it was another religious group. There are plenty of examples by way of a quick google search to suggest otherwise - that's even if you are simply focusing on this country. Religion has a funny way of bringing out the best and worst in people. The second highlighted point was poor judgement if it was the actual case - it took a very talented Muslim to bring many to justice. Standing up and saying what you're doing is wrong is exactly what he did.
Legend_in_blue Posted 3 March 2023 Posted 3 March 2023 Sue Gray is the liar and a fixed penalty notice for breaking the rules doesn't qualify as breaking the rules apparently according to him. He's a pathological liar.

He killed himself a short time later. The 19-year-old had also tweeted a link to a 65-page screed he’d authored advocating the genocide of queer people, Jewish people and Black people. Krajčík mimicked and cited the writings of other white supremacist mass shooters, whom he referred to as “saints.” And in a “special thanks” section, he expressed gratitude for the online community that had radicalized him. “Terrorgram Collective,” Krajčík wrote in italics for emphasis. “You know who you are…. Building the future of the White revolution, one publication at a time.”" The darker side of social media shows up again. And again Pandora's Box is well and truly open. There's very little chance of ever getting full grip of t'internet/social media. It's way too late.

The only thing that can be done is neutralise such people as and when they become a threat, and try to counter the ideas that make people listen to them in the first place.

People do not have a right not to be antagonized. They do not have a right not to be offended. They DO have a choice as adults not to care about some kids being dickheads with a book. They choose to be offended. Which is ridiculous.

Well that's just ridiculous, especially from a man who chose to get offended by some kids books being changed. You're basically saying bullying is ok and that victims have no rights when on the receiving end of antagonistic, offensive behaviour.

I wasn't offended by some kids books being changed, I disagreed with it. Not the same thing. Anyway the point is these angry death threat making religious nutters are choosing to act like that.
