It's a pretty sound metric to go by, generally speaking.  Maguire being an exception.

I mean it's not as if Vestergaard had outstanding individual stats that belied his team's performances.  We knew what we were getting and it was a baffling signing.

Andy Robertson was part of the very same defense. So two exceptions from the same team, i.e. questionable metric.
Look, I completely agree signing Vestergaard was odd in the first place and he very rarely stood out in a positive way for Southampton and blew hot and cold at BMG.

But then just state that you didn't rate him to begin with. Trying to embellish it with a very sketchy metric at best is just as deceiving as the turd polishing.

Maybe the deal was already signed with Vestergaard before Maresca left (there were some sour grapes from Top after all), but not announced until later.

I agree that's the best case explanation - but it's also Rudkin's job to know Enzo might jump ship and be wary of making manager- specific signings if that is a  possibility. Or to hold fire on significant contracts until a new manager has been appointed - especially as the player had repeatedly failed at Premier League level.

There is a world of difference between signing ageing plodders to play in the premier league and signing them when you're on your arse in league one.

The Southampton fixation continues

You at least have the argument of EPL experience for the EPL, in League one there is no need for such experience.

They were in a situation where they'd already pissed Enzo off so much by basically lying to him about the PSR situation. So when that summer hit they instantly extended his contract on the demands of Enzo. He then of course left and that great sporting alignment appoint a manager who doesn't have any kind of alignment with Enzo.

Glad to see we have learned our lesson finally though by not trying to get a manager we can't afford and feed him with signings beyond our means to make it look to him like we are all fine 👀

The contract extension happened in the winter before all of that I think. Wasn't announced until the summer but was agreed way before.

Rogers badgered him to sign, then realised how slow he was and denied all input into his signing.Vesty called him out so Rogers made him train with the kids and played big Dan.

Nice reminder of when some people occasionally still remarkably fall for Rodgers' rubbish. He was one of the architects of all of this.

Jesus christ. The brass balls on some of these people.

I don't play professional football and get paid significantly less - I would feel some small sense of duty to my workplace if I eroded everything around me and was in a position to at least help. These people cannot be from the same species as me.

Literally no humility. No sense of responsibility. No sense of morality.

With that said, good. Get the **** out of here. We signed you at the tip of the wave and you're scurrying out when you've caused it to come crashing down.

He will have to look back at this period and know that he's spent the most games ruining our football club and is in no small part responsible for that. Get out.

This is the culture that Aiyawatt has built. Immense player power, generous contracts and no incentive to do well. Rewarded for taking the piss out of the club. He's a very weak man.

all the cards ffs! Getting 3 years at his age was absolutely daft.

Absolute madness. As correctly pointed out on here by numerous this wasn't a hindsight thing. The majority thought it at the time - like the Ayew signing.

Yep. He took over (in tragic circumstances) a brilliant position where a lot of the hard work had been done. It is just declined and disintegrated as their influence and imprint grew.

And the lesson is that if you put even a company like Nvidia in the hands of a fool, he will eventually destroy it.

There are three types of people in this sort of scenario:-

Intelligent people

Idiotic people

And idiotic people who think they are intelligent - the most incompetent of all.

Our owner clearly fits into the last of these.

You’re not only right but speaking without the benefit of hindsight. This forum was unanimous, at the time his contract was extended, it was a terrible deal for the club.

Rodgers' fragile ego and narcissism is a major contributor to our catastrophic demise.

Unfortunately the vast majority of football fans (primarily talking about those of other clubs and the media) cant partake in critical thinking, and would often parrot the rhetoric that Rodgers - who was a self purported expert in NLP - recited, in the vacuum that the idiot 'Top' created.

So you think league one is like the EPL then?

Feels like I am talking to Rudkin.

We get a 33 year old not hungry, high risk, high salary ex EPL player to play in league one, by the small chance we get a double promotion we then have a 35 year old as our main striker.

Or we do what we used to do and what most clubs at this level do, buy or promote a young hungry striker, let him gain experience in league one, then the championship, and hopefully later the EPL, when at that point he has had at least 2 seasons with the team, hungry for more, and bedded into the club.  All whilst being cheaper to pay, and having resale value.

Well you were making the point that An over the hill premier League player would be a better signing for a newly promoted premier League eam than for a league one team.

Players like Reid, Ayew and newly extended Vestergaard were terrible business because they were past it at that level.  It stands to reason that such a player would have a better chance of success at a lower level.

In other news, water is wet.

We need to stop with patch work signings, and do stuff with more long term sense.  Its a huge part of our current issues.

Vestergaard played the most minutes of any centre back last season in one of the worst defensive units we've ever had.

His blunders at the back last season cost us the points we would have needed to stay up.

With him at the back we went 3-0 down at half time in consecutive games, I'm pretty sure we were the only team to do so last season.

He is disastrously terrible and anyone saying otherwise doesn't have a clue.

I remember Ali mauchlan saying at the Q&A back in September before the West Brom game on the Friday night that in his opinion,

vestergaard is the best centre half in the championship 🙈😄

It wasnt unanimous, a lot of people on here at the time were chuffed because he had a half decent season in the Championship under Enzo.

Anyone who watched him every week knew

he was useless.Too Slow and slowed

down the momentum of the team.

Not sure why he got the contract,

Drain the swamp, get him gone.

Page 81 of this thread is when we announced his new 3 year deal. There categorically is not "a lot of chuffed people" reacting to this news.

There are some stormers in there though, good to confirm as recently as 2024 people thought we could negotiate favourable terms
