Can believe this is more likely the reason, as it seemed odd when I read Rutter sell on justified them moving for Hzolek (After their frontman got crocked)

For the positions where you’d be starting most weeks in the Prem for us (ST, CAM, LB, etc.) you’d think with a half competent DoF we’d be pretty attractive shop window for young forwards looking to push themselves on a big stage.

Surely step one of any transfer is making sure the players wants to come to the club ... How many times do you hear " X club has agreed terms with the player, now just need to agree a few".

No, they’ve sold a striker that scored 16 goals for them last season and have European football I believe - so their need of a replacement is obvious and this looks like a sensible target for them.

 

Additionally Hoffenheim is about 3 hours away from Leverkusen - so you can kind of understand why he might consider this a better offer for him.

 

Final point - I believe it’s the German Supercup this weekend and he’s probably in the squad for that, so I wouldn’t expect a definitive move either way until after the weekend.

I mean, yes that is true, but they’re also in the Europa league and finished 7th in the Bundesliga. They are a miles better prospect than us.

Just a thought: maybe in future we ask the player if he's actually interested before engaging in weeks of negotiations with other clubs?
