Apparently he was literally by the exit door and managed to get out .

So sad reading about that family of 5 including 3 kids and the other victims .

Yes its awful.  The only positive I can find in that is I would rather not be left behind if my wife and kids where on that plane.

Yes. But the blackbox collects also other data.

From watching many episodes of Air Crash Investigations I understand that there are actually two devices. One records cockpit voice conversations and the other records aircraft technical data.

And they’re located in the tail which we saw intact post accident

probably been retrieved and will be en route to be downloaded (I think this is done in a few regional centres around the globe )

considering the aircraft was in "flight" for just 30 seconds, and for at least the first part of that, everything would have appeared relatively normal it doesn't give much time for anyone to think "we're about to crash, I;m going to unbuckle my seatbelt, open that door and jump out" - so seems more likely perhaps he was "ejected" from the wreck on impact - but we shall see

When I saw the video my mind was drawn to this incident - Emirates 407 which took off from Melbourne after exhausing the entire runway and struggled to gain height, and was only a few metres above the ground after 500m beyond the runway threshold. It eventually climbed and returned to Melbourne, with tailstrike damage.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emirates_Flight_407#Investigation

The investigation concluded that the first officer has understated the aircraft weight in the flight computer resuliting in a lower the necessary engine thrust and consuquently insufficient accelaration and airspeed.

Still not sure I can totally believe this survivor but I guess similarly insane stories of survival have happened before

I only learned of this incredible story on Monday.  Her plane disintegrated at 10, 000 feet and she was blown out still strapped to her seat and then survived 10 days in the Amazon.

And there's a stewardess that had a plane break up at 33000 feet and somehow survived the fall.

Was the referee Howard Waab?

A few different potential cases for the Air India crash reported here. Could potentially be an extremely rare double engine failure, maybe even caused by bird strikes to both engines. Extremely rare however as they say, if something can happen then there's going to be a point in time where that thing does happen. That and a chap walking away from it, its almost unfathomable.

Seen two angles of the take off and doesn’t seem to be any evidence of an sig bird strike.  One or two small birds entering an engine isn’t going to cause yesterday’s failure to gain height

some chat yesterday about fuel contamination (no idea if that’s feasible) - more likely to be catastrophic hydraulic failure and loss of power. Can’t believe it will take too long for the flight recorders to be retrieved and news to leak out.

From BBC

The British man who was the sole survivor of Thursday's Air India plane crash said he managed to escape the wreckage through an opening in the fuselage.

"I managed to unbuckle myself, used my leg to push through that opening, and crawled out," Vishwashkumar Ramesh told Indian state media DD News.

Mr Ramesh, 40, was in seat 11A on the London-bound Boeing 787 flight when it went down shortly after take off in Ahmedabad, western India on Thursday.

Air India said all other passengers and crew were killed - including 169 Indian nationals and 52 British nationals. More than 200 bodies have been recovered so far, though it is unclear how many were passengers and how many were from the ground.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Mr Ramesh said the lights inside the aircraft "started flickering" moments after take off.

Within five to 10 seconds, it felt like the plane was "stuck in the air", he said.

"The lights started flickering green and white...suddenly slammed into a building and exploded."

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a building used as accommodation for doctors at the Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Medical College and Civil Hospital.

Mr Ramesh told the Indian broadcaster he could not believe that he came out alive.

"I saw people dying in front of my eyes - the air hostesses, and two people I saw near me," he said.

"For a moment, I felt like I was going to die too, but when I opened my eyes and looked around, I realised I was alive.

"I still can't believe how I survived. I walked out of the rubble."

Think myself it’s more a case of the pilot retracting the flaps accidentally and not the landing gear

Isn't there lot's of fail-safes in place to avoid something like this happening? And doesn't the pilot have like 22 years experience? I just don't know, it just looks like something has failed rather than human error but we'll see. I hope it's not the latter.
