If it's ankle ligaments, even as a minor one, I'd imagine at least 3-4 weeks out.

Anything else more serious, even if the stretcher was precautionary, probably looking at 6-8 weeks minimum?

Thanks, To be fair to him he's come in hitting the ground running so to speak. He's allowed us to play a 3 at the back and get the FBs forward in possession.

Let's hope it's more precautionary and he'll be back soon.

I rolled my ankle playing (Sunday league) football in a similar way to what Ben Nelson did yesterday in February 2024. In my collision there was no contact, but all of the weight came through one ankle when landing.

Long story short, but an ultrasound confirmed I had fully ruptured 3 major ligaments across the ankle.

I couldn’t play football for ~4 months after the incident, and that was considered a quick recovery by the physio/doctor.

I assume a professional athlete would be able to recover quicker than me, but I still think we’re looking at months until we see him again.

You can get different levels (grades?) of it though. It may look similar and I think I've done similar to you. But not necessarily the same. It may even just be a sprain (albeit a large one) as opposed to any ligament tear/rupture. Let's hope so anyway!

I did the same, went black and purple! I was out for 7 months, but that was probably my fault for rushing back.

Absolutely gutted for him as he was looking really good in defence. Calm, composed and ready the game well.

Hopefully he won't be out for too long for him.

No different with all injuries though. Quite a few lads do their ACL where they can play on and it's not until the next day that they find out it's ruptured. When I did mine, it completely went and swelled up immediately with no way I could put weight on it. That was nearly 10 years ago and I've never been able to properly run again, yet the doctor in a and e said I'd probably just hurt my meniscus lol. That was after he claimed he'd done the same running a marathon and couldn't get out of bed for a week.

Us mere mortals probably get the worse of it in terms of recovery but it's just a bit pointless speculating at the moment. Unlikely that it's going to be nothing but that could have been a big precaution and it's fairly minor. Here's hoping anyway because his inclusion has been the only slither of hope recently

Yep. I had fully ruptured (grade 3) three of my ligaments. So I guess that’s sort of a worst case scenario.

I was offered injections to speed up recovery, however the doctors recommended that I let it heal naturally, so I didn’t take the injections. So there are ways to speed up recovery, but they too have consequences.

I wish him a speedy recovery- gutted for him.

It will annoy me if Marti references the injury as an excuse for any future issues. He’s been available all season and this week is the first time he’s seen any league action

I did this very same thing a couple of years a go. Landed on my ankle on one leg after jumping for a header. I wasn't right for about 8 months although I didn't have the medical care he'll have. Also I only severely strained ligaments, not snapped so god only knows what would happen if you snapped one.

Also the pain was so excruciating I was riving around which he didn't look like he was doing so maybe he's just lightly strained it.

Opened my world up to physio tape though. Magical stuff and wish Id known about it earlier.

It's amazing what a bit of tape can do to make you feel normal again. I reckon in 4 weeks he could be playing again with some physio tape if just a strain.

Think we won't rush him back though. If it's Faes that replaces him then hopefully a kick up the backside for him to improve his performances.

Im wondering if it should be Okoli that is replaced though when he does return. So Faes Vestergaard and Nelson in a 3?  Only If Faes can improve of course...

To me Okoli looks way off it at the moment.

Rolled my ankle a couple of years back and strained the ligaments- knew instantly, it's a very different sensation to muscular/joint injuries. Even a minor strain took a couple of months to recover from, but I'm getting on a bit.

This is it mate. Youth is on his side and I'm sure I was back at work the next day hobbling around when I should have been resting up.

I mean the silver lining if he is out past January is that Souttar is almost guaranteed to have a path back into the fold. Whether he can be arsed to stay if Sheff Utd come calling is another matter.

I'm still praying that Nelson / Souttar are our primary CB pairing by the end of the season, regardless of league position. They're both proven, no-nonsense defenders at this level with high praise from the fans of teams they played for. I'm not too bothered who rotates / partners in a 3 with them so long as one or both of Faes and Vesty are sent packing. I'm just bored of supposed ball-playing "defenders", man. Nelson's been a breath of fresh air in his recent cameo, it's gutting to know we've got to go back to the clown show again for however long it takes.

The only issue if the two of them do end up playing together is pace, but then again we might have a manager by then who has three braincells to rub together and realise that, yes, you can play your centre backs deep and still play good transitional football.

If we have money on the table for Souttar from Sheffield United in January then surely we take it. Would be nice to have an aerially dominant defender but the money is probably worth more.

Injuries can happen but do think the one on here who kept making the point that he'd been thrown in after months of not even playing any football may have had a point. Been calling for him to play, but this did seem risky - could've been mitigated by simply playing him from the start.

We know Souttar is good at this level though and do you trust us to spend the money well?

I think the squad's bloated as it is and we wouldnt miss him if we sold him considering he has barely ever played for us. If we have an offer we would be silly not to take it and dont even need to replace him.

In an ideal world he proves his fitness and we move on Faes

I would move on both, 3 first team centre backs with an academy lad like Kevon Gray as emergency backup is enough imo.

Yep that was me. And I got told that was rubbish. But they do a pre-season for a reason. Essentially going that long without playing at all needs some kind of ‘pre-season’.

I'd move Souttar on if we could get an anywhere near decent fee for him.  I'm not convinced he's particularly good anyway, but given he's coming back from a serious injury if we can remove the gamble of him getting back to his best for some actual funds then I'm all for that.

I know people like to point to his stint at Sheffield Utd last season, and it's a valid point, but they also liked Hamza as well, and in general we think he's shit.

Any funds can be used on getting a striker in, not looking at replacing Harry himself.  But tbh I don't think anyone takes the chance, so hoping he comes through this long layoff largely unscathed.
