Nice for him to get the goal. Looked solid and his bursts out of the back with the ball helped us gain ground up the pitch quickly a few times.

Poor for the penalty and needs to learn from that as another day he isn’t bailed out by Jakub and the momentum swings the other way.

As others have said, aside from the penalty which was very rash, he looked solid and assured.

He is quality in possession, he looked calm and rarely gave the ball away, his positioning and reading of the game also belies his years, another one to build the squad around for next season.

He was my MOTM last night. His reading of the game is much improved and has all the raw physical tools and  technical abilities to be an elite CB.

Tackles: 5

Clearances: 10

Interceptions: 2

Recoveries: 5

Fouls committed: 1

Passes made: 44/51 (86%) - team avg 80%

Goals: 1

When you give a stupid penalty away you of course have to take the criticism but up until that and after it he really did play well.

His passing was good, carried the ball well and felt like he got to his man quicker.

Not going overboard but that’s how I felt anyway. Okoli was solid too bar some honking passes

I think this will be ever thus - apart from the inevitable future moments lacking solidity of course !

Very good last night bar the penalty

It wasn’t even the tackle for the penalty, it was the fact he was too tight and got turned that put himself in the position to make that tackle. That’s the stuff that comes with experience

He has all the attributes to be a very good central defender

But also think a lot of what he did well last night came from getting tight and being aggressive to try and win it. Very similar to what Soyuncu and Fofana used to do, but you have to take with that they may get turned from time to time.

Definitely felt like he was trying to get tight to his man quicker last night.

I know he’s been up and down and some don’t rate him which is fair enough but I do think there’s a good player in there.

True, but just felt he got pulled into the wrong area that time, Thomas was too high and it left a gaping hole behind him

I love an aggressive centre half, but it needs to be in the right moments, we’d just turned the ball over and weren’t in any kind of shape

I’m nit-picking. I really rate him, but that’s the kind of thing he’ll need to learn from if he wants to play at the very top. Don’t stop being aggressive, just do it at the right times

When I was watching it live last night you could see it happening and unfold. I remember thinking don’t go into that and then that we were in trouble as it unfolded. He will learn and get better but I thought he looked very promising last night.

I also thought the penalty was a bit soft as their player ran offline to make contact with Ben to draw the foul. Again experience and the lack of it.

Should we stay up, the signing of JJ and contract extension for Nelson need to be very high on the clubs To Do list.

Thing is, we will only sign JJ to activate our clause and sell him on. Can't see him staying either from a financial or a "I want to" perspective.

But yes, penalty aside, Nelson was superb and definitely on the keep list.

Talk of him being our next big thing are way off. Cannot do the defensive basics. Looks very shaky.

Like I said in the match thread - I'd rather a youngster make a mistake as part of his learning curve than the calamity bros, Faes, Okoli, etc we've had making routine errors supposedly at the height of their careers like the last few seasons.

There is still a potential England cap in this kid should the club trajectory allow it.

He seems to have errors that’s cost us big chances or goals in more or less every game

The case for basically all of our centre backs unfortunately
