I am - he is 38 and has no contract anywhere and not getting a penny with that legal bill probably still being paid - add to that he has no proper pre season in him at his age and nobody at all has taken a punt on him - absolute disaster

There are quite a few 38/39 year-olds without a contract at a top tier football club right now. For those who want to continue to play, it's not unusual that they sign for someone quite late on in the window. Older players don't always want to submit themselves to exhausting pre-season programmes (e.g. Cambiasso, who was 4-5 years younger than Vardy when he came to us, and was without a club pre-season) and wait. I have no idea whether he's struggling to pay off his wife's legal bill, or whether his entire existence hinges on another lucrative contract, but I do know that it was widely reported in the local press that Valencia had offered him a deal and he hasn't yet got back to them. So maybe he isn't as desperate as you think. If you have inside knowledge of his priorities and finances then obviously I'd bow to your superior knowledge.

Even if he expects to be on 100K+ per week, I expect there would be interest in him from some quarters of the planet. Perhaps he's just waiting to see if something at a more competitive level comes up. But I suspect his options - at playing level, coaching or punditry level - are greater than they are for lots of other 38/39 year-olds. Calling it a disaster for a man who is nearly 40, regardless of how successful he's been, to be without a contract at an elite football club is a bit extreme. It's not as if he's a 27 year-old who marched out of the club proclaiming his certainty that he was headed for bigger and better things.

He can sign wherever he wants.  You likely won't be happy with any team he signs for.

Just accept it, have a sympathy wank and move on lol.

Come on,  he has been on north of 100k a week for the past 10 years!  if it was just 100k a week (which we know was a lot higher and that's before any endorsements, sponsors etc.) that is 52 million quid! do you really think he is bothered about not earning anything? He could pay the legal bill (which i am sure has already been paid!) with the change down the back of the sofa!

The bloke doesnt need to do anything apart from keep fit. The closer it is to the season starting the more likely he will be to get a contract he wants as teams will become more desperate. If he goes to the MLS he might not start until next season (feb) but to think he has had a disaster i think you might be over egging it just a little bit!

You can knock half of that £52m straight away in tax.

The other £26m his mrs and kids will have spent.

Would a 6-month deal work for both parties if MLS is his destination? If the money was right now were moving on some of the other higher earners it could come to something - keeps him fit, we have another striking options who just so happens to be the most decorated player in our history. win/win for both as when he goes we might have some room for maneuver in the january window

Nah, love the man but we need to move on.

Would have been like us resigning Emile Heskey instead of giving Vardy a chance back when he signed.

Going off-topic here, but pro sports people can offset their tax in different ways and many pay max into pensions as they access pension benefits from the age of 35. I'm sure there are more qualified on here that would comment but can't see a scenario where JV be paying 50% of earnings in tax.

He has property in Portugal so just keeping fit

It's Quinta Do Lago, friends of mine live in the area.

Lots of teams do pre-season at the complex.

Several footballers/ex footballers have property there, Vardy, John Terry, Scot Parker.

I guess….as much as I loved Heskey in the day, I think Vardys got a bit more in the legs even at this stage of his life. Just feel like it would give us a chance to scope the market during the season
