Leicester City 'register interest' in free agent defender but face Championship competition
Story by Jordan Blackwell

Leicester City have registered their interest in left-back Max Lowe, according to reports, as they build a side for League One.

Lowe is out of contract at Sheffield Wednesday this summer and it seems there are several clubs keen on taking him, including City.

The Sheffield Star report that while Wednesday are keen to retain Lowe for their own League One campaign, City, Derby, Stoke and Middlesbrough have come forward to show their interest.

City were linked with Lowe last summer but, amid their financial restrictions, buying a player from another club was always unlikely.

While Lowe has been a left-back for much of his career, he’s spent most of the past season with Wednesday playing in a more central role, on the left side of a back three. City are likely to need to strengthen in both areas.

At left-back, City currently have two senior options under contract. But while Luke Thomas is a strong contender to stay, an exit for Victor Kristiansen seems on the cards after he made clear that he did not sign for City to play in the third tier of English football.

Bade Aluko is set to play a more prominent role next season, and has played at left-back in the past, but he’s now principally seen as a right-back.

At centre-back, Jamaal Lascelles is out of contract while Wout Faes, Ben Nelson, Caleb Okoli and Harry Souttar could all be sold, leaving just Jannik Vestergaard.

Lowe played 29 times in all competitions for Wednesday this season, and has a wealth of experience at Championship level, which is where City are aiming to get back to. He’s also played in the Premier League previously, with Sheffield United.

I'd genuinely rather just promote Mirsad Ali as the Thomas back up. If we do have room in the budget to go after a left back then it should be one that is good going forward.

Thomas should be a more than capable League 1 fullback. He's played nearly 200 professional games now.

I know this is our level now but hes sh*t, can we not be a little more creative than a 29yo journeyman.

.....Welcome to Leicester City :dunno:

Thomas is shite but will hopefully have suitors and I'd like to hope we'd look to flog him. We need him to move on and to move on from him, I don't want a "capable League One full back" I want a good League One full back.

He completely stifles us defensively and offensively. I never want to see him play for us again.

Beggars can't be choosers but if it's between Thomas or Lowe then I choose Thomas.

Am I the only one who thinks this would be a good signing? Free transfer, experienced, relatively low wages. We're going to be basically building a squad from scratch. Yeah, we need to invest in players, but we're also going to need bodies through the door that are not going to cost us a load of money? Wednesday want to keep him, there are Championship clubs that are also interested in him - I don't think this is one that we can really afford to turn our nose up at?

If it’s a cheap deal he’d be a functional starter in L1 and good back up for the Championship if we get up on a free. If we are losing Kristiansen then I’d be happy to sign him and essentially use a chunk of VK’s wages for VK level play, with any fee we get on top. Positions like full back don’t need addressing until we go back up for now, you can survive with utter shite at full back in L1

The question would be, now Sheffield Wednesday are sorted with owners, no points deduction and I believe freedom back in the transfer market, why would they not look to keep him?

They are a now a more attractive prospect than us for next season and will most likely have a better season than us so I’d question why they would not keep him and if they do want to, why he would leave them for us.

Impressive if he comes here and has Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Derby, Forest and Leicester on his CV though!

I think if you sign him, and an equivalent level player in central midfield and up front in January we survive quite comfortably. Not flashy but I just cannot believe he can be worse than Thomas.

Three things would concern me most if there had been even a hint of truth in our interest.

The first is that he's not particularly good and is unlikely to get any better. He's pretty much a tier three-level player, so it would indicate another transfer window of trying to bring in 'oven ready' players for our level rather than any sort of building for the long-term.

The second is that, for once, I do actually know a bit about Max Lowe, and there are certainly a good few Derby fans who felt that he lacked a bit of fight and desire when they were struggling and that he was also a tad too big for his boots. I even remember one incident where he himself admitted that his head was up his own arse. Pretty much verbatim. So that would suggest that we've not learnt anything about the need to scout character rather than simply playing credentials. In fact, it would indicate that instead of trying to bring in PL-standard players regardless of whether they're ****heads, we've dropped down a couple of divisions and are trying to bring in 2nd/3rd tier players who may well be ****heads instead.

And the third very concerning point is that we don't have a manager yet. So that would indicate that Top, Rudkin, Glover (and possibly their new friend on the board, McCarron) are still plotting the future course, recruitment strategy, playing style and personnel of the team without any input from whoever is going to have to actually manage them, or stick up for them next season. I mean, that worked out well in January, didn't it?

Personally don’t think Lowe is shit at all. At League 1 level he would be a very good signing and would be a huge upgrade from what we currently have (not hard).

Realistic left back targets:

1) Harry Amass

2) Max Lowe

3) Fode Ballo-Toure

4) Jamal Lewis

5) Steve Seddon

He's done his time at Champ level now and there's talk if Carrick gets the job he'll be integrated into the first team next season.

Can't see him coming to us.

If reports are true if West Ham are down they are going for Diouf so his first team chances may not be as frequent. Although having said that I can see him in the prem maybe with Coventry
