I said to my son on the way home yesterday, if I was a L1 manager playing us, i would simply boot the ball out for a Leicester goal kick everytime.  You know exactly what is going to happen and what to do. And you 100% know that between Souttar, Okoli, Thomas and McCarthy, a mistake is coming. You literally dont need another tactic, and you don't even need to press Okoli because he cant do anything with the ball anyway. Just run the keeper and Souttar ragged every time they play out.

Said in another post, the i genuinely thought Russell would tone done this part of his game. Really shocked hes gone all in with it.

He has gone full Martin.

Sheffield Untied worked us out, just press and we will mess up.

The lack of be patient its only been two games types have been very quiet since yesterday. If hes already caused those to falter then its really an uphill struggle for him.

Just one modicum of success at Saints and that was probably less than expected at the time. Nothing in his CV suggests he will lift the club out of the mire actually the contrary

He needs to get in McCarrons office and demand 2 new CBs with at least one that can pass a bit and a physical holding midfielder asap because that's the most important part of his team's with the way he wants to play. If he carries on with Soutter, Okoli and Skipp it's going to get pretty toxic soon enough. Those guys either want out or a shit but I'm not convinced Martin is the right man anyway.

Cmon, dont twist my words. I said its criminal right now that Gray is not remotely prepared to be backup. Its just part of a wider problem. I said after Northampton that we needed a complete refresh of CB (funny that a lot told me on here that Souttar would be just fine at this level), but its clear that we are nowhere near that right now.

The errors our CB's made are because they are not good football players (and want out and have downed tools), and are subsequently massively exposed by the style of play.  We've known for ages that once Okoli's confidence is broken he becomes even more of a liability.  Sometimes (like Souttar), these players end up in teams where their flaws dont matter much (like Australia), but in those systems these players aren't winners, they just get results from time to time.

Russell could have toned down this style slightly to accommodate the CB problem, but he hasn't. I blame the manager for that. I presume that he thought it simply wouldnt be a problem and quality would grind out results. Part of me respects him for that, but that lands on his shoulders. I'll say it again, i don't think we need Martin to turn into Tony Mowbray or Big Sam overnight, he just needs to dial it down a little in key areas.

So yeah, we have terrible CB's, terrible recruitment, and a manager who is not capable of either reading the room or making better use of what he has. We also have a problem where we are going to be looking for a profile of CB that we cant afford.

Yes, the club has been a shambles over the last 5 years. But that doesnt mean the Martin is exempt from criticism for the last 2 games.

Go back and look at the goals we conceded against Nott C and Burton they are cause by basics, nothing yo do with style of football.

BIL a Stoke fan he was shocked we paid 15m for Souttar a player who can only play in a 3 CB formation.

How many manager has Okoli play under, Cooper, RVN, Marti, Rowett and now Martin, he's been crap under them all.

Only man to get a tune out of Souttar, Wilder because he plays a 3.

Of course Martin should be criticised, but some need to realise what a shambles we were in when he arrived.

5 manager since Enzo, are they all crap our is it the group of players.

We need to drain the swamp.

Dare i say it though, he looked better than Skipp. At least Hamza can tackle and has some physicality (and we did see some good from him in this regard yesterday). If Hamza can win the ball higher up the pitch has get rid of it to someone who can pass, that might actually work. Ndidi couldnt really do much with the ball in the Enzo season. Maybe clutching at straws!

Hamza is a better CDM than Skipp 100% I reckon. It's a low bar mind.

If youre a centre back who needs to play in a 3  (ala Souttar and Coady) to look half decent in that division, then you can probably deduct a division from the standard theyre playing at if they have to play in a 2. Its the easiest job on the field in a 3. You just sweep up and get protected by the other dogsbodies.

Sadly we have to choose between a useless idiot and a useless clown.  Hamza can make a tackle but he will be on the ball more than making tackles.  I can't stand seeing him do his best Vestergaard impression and stand on the ball rather than just pass straight away, then it goes backwards or they try and ping it around a congested area.  We need to get the ball to Sammy asap so he can drive forwards looking for  Burns and Alves running into space.  The best part of Enzo ball was the KDH drive to bring everyone forwards

We have more than enough ability in Aluko, Sammy, the wingers and new forward but the style and the clowns around them that dictate the pace are the cause of what we are seeing.

100% agree with this. His football is outdated and dull and we don't have the players for it but the goals conceded are because we have defenders who cannot do the basics which you would expect from professional players at any level. Look at the first goal yesterday how suddenly from the ball with their full back they have a 3 v 2 overload on the edge of our box. No communication, Skipp in dream land, CB's doung their own thing without discipline and then being half-arsed in the reaction afterwards. We have been defensively shi£ since the first relegation and have done nothing to address it as a club

A further highlight of the big issue Martin.

He does have solutions to the problems he’s seeing on the pitch; but he’s failing to properly identify why they’re happening and how to correct them.

I couldn't agree more. I'd almost say this is more key than the Cbs.

Braybrooke should be at 6 from the current players we have available.

So you think the CB problem is down to him and not picking Gray?

Where have you been in the last 5 years?

You also think the errors the CBs made our due to our style of of play.

they are. Souttar was, up until his injury, a key player for Sheff Utd in a season where they only didn't go up because Leeds and Burnley were phenomenal. Okoli sure looks shit but we are actively playing to their weaknesses. Neither can play a strong passing game and asking them to play the ball among themselves at the back to build attacks is asking for trouble.

Hamza did look better than Skipp in all fairness.

Thing is, Hamza is a twat for all the wrong reasons, his off the field antics have really let him down, badly. But he is a player who’s built for league 1 and 2…. He’s physical, robust and gets stuck in. Had glaring limitations but doesn’t every player at this level. But he’s likely not get bullied and will dish out his fair share of robust tackles…. I think it would be wise to just try him in that holding role, and see how we get on…..

None of which actually ever really tried a different style of football they all played slow possession based never get the ball in the box passport from the back nonsense.

We need to play quick counter attacking football 4-4 fing 2 back to basics target man up front get balls into the box high pressure to win it back when we lose it

Cooper does not play that style, nor does Rowett.

As for counter attacking football, that is only possible when you cede possession to the opponents. It was fine when we were an underdog in the premier league when we won it and opponents wanted the ball. In this division even more so than The Championship, we are the big dogs, the majority of opposition will not want the ball. They’ll hold a deep block and try and do us on the break or settle for a draw. We can’t force an opponent to be the possession based team at this level. What we have to be is way better whilst inevitably dominating possession. We need to be quicker, more intelligent with our passing, more incisive and yes at times way more pragmatic than trying to play stupid passes via a goalie that can’t kick the ball to defenders who can’t pass a ball. We aren’t though built for a 442 longs balls into the box. The squad lacks that skillset and the physicality in the attacking middle in numbers for that style of football.

I know Wout Faes isnt a fans favourite but he can do a job at this level playing the posession style game.

Souttar more of a danger going fwds from corners - seems a bit slow and flat footed when defending...

I would play Hamza over Skipp all day long.

It’s not a stretch to say he has 8 games to save his managerial career, if he doesn’t win any of our first 10 games he will have to go, ba do don’t think he will ever recover from this.

I want him gone already, seen enough! Rangers fans warned us too

I think if he hasn't won any of his first five league games he will (or should...) be gone and as I half predicted when he first joined then Hourihane and King will take charge.  Obviously the MK Dons, Plymouth and Oxford games will be more defining than the last two you feel (if all the wanted transfers are in place by then), as to how this season is going to play out under Martin's tenure if we persist with him....but the signs so far are dire!

He said all the right things after the game. Not sure I’m backing him to turn this around but I’ll give him another 4 games before I turn on him.

If you don't mind, I'm interested to know what were the things he said that seemed to you to be the roght things?

His post match comments fixed for the season.

“You can’t give teams a head start, and we did, we gave them two goals (As required - and we have a man sent off,) we can’t afford to do that against any opponent, anywhere we go.”
