So the hype starts. Trey Nyoni already being bigged up by the media and Monga also getting an article on the Beeb after 30 minutes in a friendly.

 

It'll be interesting to see if he can navigate all the noise around him and develop into the player that he's touted to become. Would be great to see a product of our Academy hopefully follow in the footsteps of Lineker, Heskey, Chilwell, Barnes and even KDH.

I think he and his family deserve praise. From what I am told they were very aware of decisions that would have left us powerless to getting a decent fee for Monga, hence the provisional pro deal agreed over a year ago that was honoured to ensure it didn't go to tribunal.

But the guy is someone who's spent formative years at the club you support. He's local, has family supporting the club and is a product to some degree of the culture you come from.

 

Surely that's a reason to have at least a passing interest in how he gets on?

Splitting hairs here, aren't we? He's been at the academy since the age of 8 or 9 and spent his formative years at our club. I think you have to be a bit pedantic to start arguing he's not 'local' because he was born in a city which is less than an hour away from the club.

But surely it was also beneficial that he made his debut in the Prem and was also given valuable appearances in the championship as part of that agreement, maybe the club learned their lesson with Nyoni.

 

Monga and his parents didn’t just make that decision because they had the clubs best interests at heart.

Well he could have easily gone, nah I'll take my pick of clubs and let this go to a tribunal. Playing him wouldn't only benefit him either, we'd have to play him if we thought we had any chance of keeping him and if not to try and ensure we maximised whatever we'd of got at tribunal.

Obviously their impacts are different, but then it's just about being honest about that fact - that it's not the time spent in the first XI but rather the impact the player had for the first XI.

We could have been absolutely shafted if he hadn’t signed pro terms. They definitely did put the club’s interest in mind because they valued the way the club helped him develop with his football education and paying for his schooling at Ratcliffe College. They essentially gave us the keys to £10 million pure profit when a tribunal fee would have been nowhere near that amount.

No he played more minutes
