oxford blue Posted 12 July Posted 12 July Ings' signing will be a a huge risk given his injury record and no recent goalscoring record to suggest he can replicate his previous record from many years ago. I'm not sure either about his ability to justify his wages in League 1. Since 2023 season he has scored just 6 goals - yes 2 goals a season! A free transfer maybe but given his wages (ok we don't know but reported he got £30k at Sheffield United so I am guessing £20k a week?) this is not a cheap commitment given risk. If it comes off and he scores 15+ goals, I will agree it was an inspired signing. If we are going to take a risk on a goal scorer I would have preferred to pay a fee for one of NL top scorers last season. Of the three top scorers Matt Rush (Boreham Wood) remains in the NL as he is on their retained list . Ollie Pearce at York (now L2) has a contract until 2028 so may be too much for a transfer? I would far prefer to gamble on a proven goal scorer from a lower division than one with a poor injury record and no recent goals which is what we get with Ings.

Difference is, Daka was ten years younger than Ings when we signed him. And cost £23m. We can't throw that kind of money around any longer, the careless spending days are pretty much over.

The point I was making was that a record of goal scoring does not mean the same success at their new club. Daka was a good example what a gamble finding a striker can be.

A lot of Ings’ game relied on his quick movement over 5/10 yards (prior to his big injury at Liverpool, during his time at Burnley it was over a longer distance), now he’s lost that he hasn’t really got much threat. He’ll get marked out of most games. We’ll face a lot of low blocks this season and I don’t think a shorter, slow striker is key to breaking them down in League 1. You need a physical focal point, really. If he’s used as a sub or plays off another forward with that profile then maybe his finishing ability will be useful, but I don’t want to see him leading the line as a lone striker from the start this season. He wasn't here long but I think he was a positive addition. I do wonder if there's any long term thinking in that with Ings or he's just here to play. 1
boosmanana Posted 14 July Posted 14 July Danny Ings is 33, about to turn 34. Kevin Phillips was 40 when he signed for us. I'm not sure that age should necessarily be the worry, given that Vardy was still performing at 38 in Serie A last season. Hopefully he's coming in to help the younger players and is available when we need him to be. 2
