Whats sad is that Macarron had a chance to show a change of direction,  impact. And first signing out of the blocks is the same old terrible shit. Sack the lot

Firstly he hasn't signed and secondly, judge his performance on the signings as a whole.

True but also our first preseason game is tomorrow and we still haven't signed anyone yet in a year we are meant to be doing a squad rebuild and looking at 11 signings according to Percy. Not exactly good preparation for the team for none of them to be in yet.

We are slow again and look like we are going to be leaving it until the last minute again.

No changes seen so far...

Bit of a silly hypothetical, what would you say if he plays 30 games and scores 13 valuable goals? Also on a one year deal the risk is fairly minimal.

I’d be delighted with that scenario.

But you were being critical of people questioning bringing him in, so it’s just highlighting a very plausible scenario (likely more so that the one you have suggested), which is based on enough evidence of his recent career. This is why people are questioning it.

I’m not sure there’s much doubt that a fully fit and motivated Danny Ings could be an asset at this level. But those things coming together aren’t hugely likely.

Hopefully he is professional enough to overcome the culture issues in the club. As we have seen a few come through the doors that have been labelled as experienced professionals who have really let themselves down with their attitude/effort levels.

I am not saying our fans are entitled but we are literally the only club in league 1 who's fans would be turning their noses up at signing Danny Ings.

Well yeah. We literally are the biggest club in League 1 by a country mile. Hence supporters expect something a bit more than hoping Danny Ings might not be over the hill enough to eek 10 goals out of him in the third tier.

I was a big fan of Ings in his prime. I assume we all were. He was a bona fide PL striker, a lethal finisher & his England caps were well earned. But he isn't that anymore. Otherwise he wouldn't be joining us in L1.

I'm not ageist. 34 year old players do have their uses. But I think my main issue is that I don't understand what kind of player he is now. He's been a cameo player over the last four seasons so I can't really assess what he's lost or even gained from his heyday. His game was centred around well timed movement with decent pace & using that to find space in the box to finish. Can he still do that now? If not, has he managed to adapt & counter the movement he's lost? If he hasn't, then what does he really offer?

I also question his motivation. Does he still have the hunger to succeed? or is he just going through the motions until retirement?

I do think his fitness record has been overblown. He had that awful, near career ending injury whilst at Liverpool & missed 18 months. But he did play a lot of his best football after that, & his injury record since has been somewhat standard for a player of his profile. Impish centre forwards who move a lot do tend to pull hamstrings...

I've seen some hyperbole from posters claiming that this will be a 'disaster'. It can't be, it's only a one year deal. it's risk free as far as signings go. A free transfer on a one year deal will always be cost effective almost regardless of his salary. If it works & he has an Indian summer then great. If not, well then it's nothing ventured & nothing gained.

Or we’re offering him stupid wages….

True, probably between prem and championship wages. If we offered 90k a week to Winks then nothing is passed this lot.

Yes In league 1 and 2! Surely you can see a world where a career premier League player And former england international drops down in standard and performs very well?

Getting flashbacks of people saying Ayew would smash the championship simply because the premier league is a step up :dunno:

this isn’t someone dropping because they weren’t quite good enough at a level above, it’s down to time and physics on the guys body. No guarantee what level he’s really at. The key difference with a player like mcgoldrick is that pace was never a part of his game. Ings, could be perfect for us because the slow Martin build up just needs a someone to finish and not create for themselves…. But it all comes down to what condition he is in and it’s a hard thing to measure. We’ve been burnt so are naturally concerned, I just think it can go either way!

It's all about lifes imponderables. 2 years ago i would have said no thanks. This season on a 1 year deal possibly with an option for another I think he may be ideal. We have to remember that yes we are a big club, however we have an inept leadership and not a lot of cash. I want Chaplin as well, class above in L1. I also did not want RM but lets give them a chance, we may be proved hopefully wrong. LCFC charging for the Friendlies missed a trick. LTID Si

And in his second appearance on Boxing Day

33 years old btw.

At least it’s not a 3 year deal, are we learning?!

Fuch me has Rudkin not got involved with this one either otherwise it would be a 5 year deal at £100k a week !! ??

I suppose one difference might be that Ayew at his peak was never a goal scorer whereas Ings was a very decent one! Depends what’s left in the tank.

Yeah it’s really hard to tell. We all got annoyed to be linked with Ollie McBurnie last year and he ended up firing hull to  the prem. But our track record speaks for itself

This is definitely one of those roll the dice signings . Some work some don’t and end of the day it won’t cost us a fortune .  I’m not too fussed about it , it’s a one year deal and it’s a free and he’s bags of experience . The clubs has been toxic for so long any professional is a bonus to help the youngsters and we haven’t a pot to piss in .

Truthfully I don’t have much of an opinion on this until end of the window. If he’s been signed to lead the line then it’s an awful signing, if he’s been brought in for depth and experience then I think it’s a really smart move. No middle ground, solely depends on the rest of the business we do.

Players like him and BDCR whether people like it or not are needed in young squads. Likeable guys, hardworking, willing to help the youth and know their role within the squad.

Is he playing for free?

Thing is, even an aging Danny Ings is likely to be astronomically better than what weve had for the past few years, and now in an easier league as well.

I think for one season, this type of signing is a no brainer.  If he stays fit and hungry, he could easily hit 20 goals in a season.

Must just be me because I quite like this signing.  Ings isnt a player to hang around for 5 years and get us up through the leagues again, but he IS a player who could get us out of League One at the first attempt.

Based on what? He was performing at a worse level than Daka over the last 75 games. Completely uninspiring and anyone who thinks hes going to get more than 5 goals this year must still think were in 2021

This would surely be a Kevin Phillips situation. Less game time, off the bench, but helping our young strikers develop who are getting regular gane time?

If that is the case I think it would be a great move. If not I think its a bit short sighted.

You'd hope if this were the case he'd be on a lower wage in exchange for getting his badges
