Notts County 1-1 LCFC - Post Match Thread

An inauspicious start to the season. We were lucky to come away from that with a point. We look classy (though ineffective) for 10 mins or so and then suddenly revert to desperate defending and alarming defensive sloppiness, pinned down and lucky not to concede a load.

 

Alves looked to be on another level. I doubt we’ll keep him for long unfortunately.

 

Let’s hope that the team gels in time otherwise we’re stuck at this level for a while.

Bobby De Cordova-Reid – get reid. Useless player, horrible in front of goal, his time is up at this club. Any other League One or League Two club, but just go.

Skipp, let it be. You're not a footballer, you're a track star. Go on, compete in a marathon or something. Easily bullied off the ball, no impact going forward, won't tackle, when he tackles, his tackles go amiss.

 

Okoli's passing forward is just something else. Has the tactical perception of a toddler.

 

Very happy with our youngsters. Burns could use some end product, Braybrooke did well in the middle.

Alves looked a bit rusty in comparison, also didn't get the ball that often.

Most impressed by Joseph. Very composed, very aware, crowned his performance with the goal. What a strike!

 

Souttar did very well, too. Will we miss him?

Souttar stopped and appealed for offside when they scored!

The more I reflect on the game the more I'm p1ssed off about it. I really wanted to be more positive this season but after the games against Northampton and today I'm growing increasingly concerned that this is going to be another depressing and difficult season.

 

Defensively, we are quite simply a joke. McCarthy is past it and neither a good shot stopper nor good on the ball. The CBs are totally unsuited to building from the back, whilst it appears that we are still waiting to find a level where Thomas looks good. We desperately need McFarlane to be good and to sign at least 2 CBs who can pass the ball, if we're going to play Russball.

 

In CM we look lightweight and unable to keep possession for sustained periods. Cullen was genuinely terrible today, whilst Skipp is limited on the ball and lacking physicality. I like Braybrooke a lot but we just weren't able to get him on the ball enough today. 

 

Alves and Watson both did well but Burns offered little on the other side. At least Howell looked promising, though. 

 

Reid is not and never will be a lone striker. Unless we sign another striker, if Bristric fails I don't see where the goals are coming from. 

 

Early days, of course, but we look way off a promotion chasing team at the moment. So much work to do and only a couple of weeks to get it done. Worrying times.

The goal looks worse and worse for souttar the more I see it. Watches the ball bounce off the post and continues to stand still calling for offside. 

 

Your a defender not a linesman for ****s sake.

I could write essays on what I think of this style that's killing the game but one massive take away for me is players become so scared trying to play it. 

 

You can see Souttar second guessing everything he is about to do when he gets the ball. Even opposition like Northampton and Notts County sense that fear. 

 

Not only that, the patterns are so structured that it's so obvious. The tempo likewise. Northampton and Notts County, one of League Two and one just been in League two, haven't suddenly become these amazingly drilled football teams who've just had good days. Coaches don't find it hard to coach for this way of playing when you don't have 100m players in each position. 

 

This is stripping away all the spontaneous aspects of football and replacing it with 700 passes between centre backs and goalkeeper. That's football now in the main. I hope to God this era dies soon because I don't know many who enjoy it.

Alves looked our most dangerous player, looked to be limping just before he come off, hopefully just cramp.

I also think possession at all costs mentality destroys confidence in attacking 1v1s and snuffs out improvisation, in short it's turgid and predictably easy to play against. Every team that plays it, apart from the absolute elite who can thread passes through needles, ends up booting aimless crosses into the box because the other team are set up defensively and just force them wide.

Biggest threat on the pitch, MOTM contender with Braybrooke and JJ.

It is a little bit criminal that we haven't recruited at least two strikers, much earlier in the window. Bonkers.

 

No way in the world, we should be going into this of all seasons (when we've just cleared out the striker department) with just Bristric, meaning that BDCfvckingR leading the line 😬

Disappointed with the style of football. My hope was Martin would have adapted his style. I thought I'd seen green shoots of this during pre-season. 

 

We simply haven't the players with the necessary skillset to play this style. And I'm fed up of the only 'excitement' being are we going to get caught while playing five 5 yard passes on the edge of our area?

 

Watching Okoli trying to find the ball somewhere about his lower limbs before chipping a hospital pass out to the full back is warning enough that this isn't going to work. Souttar, although a necessary physical presence, is too slow. Skipp isn't big and strong enough to receive the ball facing the wrong way. All this means you then get slow poor passes out to the full backs and their space is taken by the press. 

 

All that said... I enjoyed watching our new JJ. Braybrook looks like he is progressing nicely and Alves looks like he can create something with a run of games and a bit of confidence. 

 

I hope our new 9 can hold the centre of the pitch and occupy the CBs which will hopefully, allow others to attack the space behind.

These names mentioned above are the reason we are shite. They have a weak mentality and not 1 of them know how to see out a game, when the pressure is against them they crumble.

 

Keep these away from the rest of the squad because like a rotten apple that mentality will spread and screw up the rest of the careers for the other players.

McCarthyism even makes Ward look good
