Worst transfer windows in our history

To cheer everyone up I thought I’d ask what our worst transfer window ever was. 
 

To make it more torturous I thought I’d divide it into categories. 
 

Reputation (how highly/lowly rated were they prior to joining)

 

Ability v cost (how close to the cost was the ability of signings. E.g. Junior Lewis utterly terrible but cheap)

 

Impact (e.g. how often did they play and affect the team)

 

It’s not you it’s me (were they just crap for us?)

The one after winning the PL. scandalously wasted a best opportunity we ever had to strengthen beyond our wildest dreams. Instead signed Ahmed ****ing Musa.

Can't remember if they had 'windows' back then or the old transfer deadline day but summer 2000 takes some beating. Rowett, Davidson, Benjamin, Akinbiyi, Cresswell, then later that season Jones, Lewis and Marshall. Not long after we lost Heskey and around the time we lost Lennon.

The correct answer is any window which includes Oliver Skipp at £25m and Jorden Ayew for £5m. Abhorrent. 
 

The worst thing is we as fans could all see these were terrible deals, yet the highly paid professionals at the club thought these were good signings. Bonkers

In recent times we've had

 

1. Vestergaard, Bertrand, Daka, Soumare

2. Wout faes

3.kristiansen, Souttar, tete

4. Skipp, Okoli, Ayew, BDCR

 

These windows truly f'd us.

 

Not a fan of the window we've just had so far either. As of yet none of the new signings have really improved us and in the case of Cullen has made us weaker by him taking the place of Page.

Nothing beats summer 2022.  Replacing Schmeichel with nobody, ready for Ward to replace him. The only incoming being Faes. Has cost us hundreds of millions.

You could pinpoint pretty much every transfer window since 21/22, and for me the summer window of 21/22 is the worst in my eyes.

 

Daka, Soumare, Vestergaard, Bertrand.

 

That was the start of our downfall.

This is just emotional self-harm.

 

But in the spirit of misery:

 

The transfer window after we won the Premier League has to be probably the most catastrophic. 

 

We bought in:

 

Islam Slimani

Ahmed Musa

Nampalys Mendy

Bartosz Kaputska

Ron Robert Zieler

Luis Hernandez

 

Out of all of them we can count Slimani as a semi-success (his goals were valuable in the Champions League and if we played entirely to his strengths he might have been okay) and Nampalys Mendy whom, after fracturing his ankle, did go on to play a good number of games.

 

£92ish Million on that lot.

Bertrand played well in the Charity Shield iirc. Went a bit down hill after that

Laid bare like that, it is a truly horrifying role call and in near successive windows too with only Maresca's window in between.

 

I think 2. Is the.mst costly as we really only needed a marginal improvement or a goalkeeper to escape relegation, but failed to act.

 

4. Is probably the biggest demonstration of negligence, narrowly beating 1.

We spent a lot of money in the summers of 2016, 2021 and 2024 to make the squad worse

 

Macia has been the only person with a hand in transfers since Walsh left who seemed to have any semblance of competency and strategy, more hits than misses under him (although the misses were *bad*)

Was going to mention this myself.

 

This is when the self inflicted damage well and truly got going.  

 

Rodgers was negligent but then this decision was way beyond that.  Shocking.

Crap (arguably the worst in terms of what they did for us) yes, but catastrophic, no. Far more damaging windows followed that and old Tater Peeler's window after MON left eventually sent us to L1 with admin on the way.
