Derbyshire in a mess

Yep, I’ve just seen. At the time of posting I could only see a draw.

I’m sure there’s a catch and it’s a shame it’s due to the hundred but this sounds very optimistic.

Incidentally Gould has always seemed to have a thing for us from when he was at Surrey, always bigged us up and stood up for the other smaller counties. So it’s probably a good thing he’s the current CEO at this important moment.

Tbf, I've been vociferous in slagging the hundred off. Firstly it's shit. And second, felt County were a turkey voting for Xmas.

Yet, irony of irony, it's proved a desperately needed windfall. Tho the host counties have, of course, unfairly imo profited more. Tho I guess they have potentially more to lose. Could the Trent Rockets usurp, or at least compete with , Notts? (Fwiw, I don't think so. Notts fans don't really go in any numbers)

Looking at the comment above tho, looks like the ECB expect county to start selling off land, now that covenant is lifted. Tho again, that'd be a short term injection. Not really a sustainable business plan.

Yep, Leicestershire received £400,000 today which they can spend as they wish. But when they get the larger amounts they have to clear debt first, which is right and proper. Then they must make long term investments rather than simply going after high profile players.

Clearly need to make the ground produce income all year round. Perhaps they could tear down the Meet, make it into a first class meeting and conference venue for example, with a little bit of seating in front of it.

Richard Thompson, ECB chair, interviewed on TMS at lunchtime, was an interesting listen

The Meet going would break my heart.

Strange we're after another wicket keeper. Hope the rumours of a fallout with Cox aren't true!

Who are we after?

Swindells retiring and at the start of next season Cox will be 34 and both Hill and Handscomb (if he's here) will be 35.

Unless Maddy whose been keeping for the seconds is fancied then a keeper in their 20s would be sensible.

Tattersall from Yorkshire.

I don't think Maddy has done enough with the bat for the seconds to warrant a first team place yet.

Not sure where these rumours are from, he was a sub at Derby last week. He’s being rested for the final championship games where he’ll be keeper after Handscomb leaves. It’s just that the pitches have meant we need an extra bowling option and Cox is sadly the most credible person to drop

I think Tattersall would make a lot of sense, he's a very decent batter and at 30 gives us more longevity in the keeping options compared to the existing three.

If you look at the ages as of next season for what's been our first choice/best XI or I'd guess would be next season if all still here:

Patel (27)

Budinger (26)

Ahmed (21)

Hill (35)

Handscomb (35)

Holland (35)

Cox (34)

Van Beek (35)

Green (28)

Scriven (27)

One of Hull (21) or Mike (27)

The middle order from 4 to 8 is all really getting on so good to be prepared for them either retiring or their form dropping off. The two overseas are somewhat easier to replace obviously but Hill, Cox and Holland have been our engine. Good news is the rest of the side is peak age or young. I do think Scrivo is good enough with the bat to go in at 6 too.

Are you serious?

Very much so.

It's part of character of the club. Knocking it down for some bland office space that wouldn't get used would be crap.

We are what we are, don't ruin what we have to chase something that will never be.

I agree that the clubs character is it's usp. But what would you do with the hundred money to make the club more sustainable instead?

I can't pretend to know the answer to that. Perhaps ring up the Derby CEO as they are turning in profits.

They built a hotel.

The proposed ground improvements Jarvis mentioned one or two years ago included one (I think). But he’s leaving as are several others of those behind the scenes after the season finishes.

The proposed ground redevelopment looked really good but the question is, would high quality new facilities help County to boost attendances, or be an expensive white elephant? The answer to that lies in determining the underlying cause for the disappointing crowds at Grace Road, expecially for CC games. Is that down to the dated facilities, or other reasons like a lack of interest in cricket in the area, ticket/membership prices, etc. If it is the latter, a few fancy new stands won't help make us more sustainable.

Not just us getting poor crowds Northampton better location nicer ground get less then we do even the likes of Warwickshire and   Glamorgan in prime locations playing at test match grounds barely get more then 500 through the gate

Sell GR and develop a ground adjacent to a park and ride with great motorway links? (Adopts the brace position)

I think an opportunity was missed years ago to return to the Electricity ground, creating a sporting quarter, close to both the KP and Welford Road.  But the building developments around the ground there a few years back has probably put paid to that idea.

It probably wasn't possible then anyhow as there was no way of generating any real sale income for Grace Road.

A move away, if a suitable location could be found, might be best. Grace Road isn't really in the best location for access, or for a hotel, as has already been said.

There was a chance to set up a run chase for Kent but it looks like we've decided against seeking to do that.  Can't see why Kent wouldn't have been open to that with a declaration this morning.

No idea if there would be a demand for it but as state schools don't have acres of playing fields (mine had a universal couple of courts that, depending on the colours of the lines, were used for a number of different sports but that was it - no grass and nothing of any size) I remember going to an outdoor sports centre in London that served many state schools called Barn Elms  - could something like that be developed for both schools and other clubs use as well as cricket facilities (may also get a few more interested in the actual game). Could be wishful thinking as the numbers may not work.

If I could change one thing about Grace Road it would be the size of pitch. Far too big and it impacts atmosphere, that far left corner if looking over from the pavilion is such dead space.
