Manwell Pablo Posted 3 December 2007 Posted 3 December 2007 If Hatton beats Mayweather they may as well award him with SPOTY (haha) there and then with the Belts, cancel that good awfull 3 hour long program they insist on showing every year, and show a re run of Leicester V Spurs in the FA cup 2006 third round. Of course thats a pretty big if.
mancunianfox Posted 3 December 2007 Posted 3 December 2007 I think you have to give it to a champion. At the moment its Joe Calzaghe for me, but if (hopefully when) Hatton beats Mayweather he should be awarded it. I would be very dissapointed if Hamilton gets it over Hatton should that he win. We shouldn't be giving awards to runners up.

That's what is rests on for me but Justin Rose has done well to top the european Order of Merit though I doubt he has any chance of winning.

Sport is about achievement and not charisma but I suppose the British like the plucky underdog more than a winner.
hairy Posted 3 December 2007 Posted 3 December 2007 Hamilton and the rugby team for the team award. Its a bag of sh!te anyway.
James. Posted 3 December 2007 Posted 3 December 2007 Hamilton will walk it. Although I'd much rather it was awarded to Hatton if he beats Mayweather. Just a shame the fight didn't happen 2 or 3 weeks ago. Hamilton has been pretty much silver spooned into F1. I have no doubt he has talent but for me the award would reflect more the ability of McLaren rather than an individual driver. I have much more respect for Hatton's achievements. A proper champion and a damn good bloke as well. I think a lot of people will agree they associate much more with what Hatton says than Hamilton. He's about as good a working class hero as you can get. This is for personality as well remember, not just sporting achievement. At least it's meant to be.
Joe. Posted 3 December 2007 Posted 3 December 2007 Hamilton will bag it easily. What he did last season is incredible really.
Staf Posted 3 December 2007 Posted 3 December 2007 I hope it is hatton if he beats mayweather but if not then hamilton all the way
Jack Posted 3 December 2007 Posted 3 December 2007 They are going to give it to Hamilton but personally I would give it Hatton if he beats Mayweather.
Jay Posted 3 December 2007 Posted 3 December 2007 Hamilton and the rugby team for the team award. Its a bag of sh!te anyway. yep think you are right!! awarding failure again, neither won anything yet we still award them with things like this!! while I admit Lewis had a good season fact is he blew it at the end while we continue to salute and award titles to people who showed weakness and failure as a nation we will never achieve anything in sport. the time may come for Lewis when he wins the world title and would then deserve it but not now.
WetFlannel Posted 3 December 2007 Posted 3 December 2007 but there arent too many british people that have achieved too much lately?
Jay Posted 3 December 2007 Posted 3 December 2007 but there arent too many british people that have achieved too much lately? but does it mean you have to give it to some who tried their best but in the end it wasn't good enough? which is exactly my point "sports personality of the year" sums up everything that is wrong with sport in Britain and the reason why we never achieve anything. The likes of Australia or America would never ever give an award like this to someone who came second, the plucky loser, the underdog whatever you want to call them
The Stig Posted 3 December 2007 Posted 3 December 2007 I think you have to give it to a champion. We shouldn't be giving awards to runners up. Coming second on your first season in F1 by a point is a huge achievement. Hammilton has acheived more this year than Hatton simply because Formula 1 is so difficult to get into, let alone do so well without any experience. It is the equivilant of Hatton coming second in the olympic boxing in his first year of professional boxing. What Hammilton did this year is almost unthinkable and to say "he's just come second" is a ridiculous thing to say, if you knew about Formula 1 you wouldn't say that as you would realise huge magnitude of the task he has accomplished.
Raj Posted 3 December 2007 Posted 3 December 2007 Gotta be Calzaghe surely. Undefeated champion of the World. Or Hatton if he beats Mayweather. BUT im sure Hamilton will win it.... I live near Hamilton.....massive Tesco there.
purpleronnie Posted 4 December 2007 Posted 4 December 2007 I reckon Hamilton will win. Probably. but surely he needs to get a personality first.
Thracian Posted 4 December 2007 Posted 4 December 2007 Probably. but surely he needs to get a personality first. To me the bloke blew it. I suppose the sporting year will be remembered for it really. He wouldn't get my vote. It was such a shabby season for the sport and for his team. Clearly Hamilton has ability but nothing about him especially impressed me otherwise. Least of all the way he contrived to lose what was virtually his own title.
