No, in London. Loads of Americans these days. Some, I assume, are good people.

apparently i was £210 behind in taxes so HMRC have changed my tax code so they get get it back via installments.

Can they do this?

Obviously they can do what they want but isnt a tax code fixed to the amount you can earn tax free?

So now my tax code is wrong just so they can get the tax back?

It'll change so that it's paid back over a certain amount of time and your tax free amount is reduced until it's paid back.

If I'm right in thinking, you can ring them and arrange to pay it off in one go, so that your tax code goes back to how it should be, without any further instalments being paid.

Ok thanks, ill wait to see how much my "take home" is affected before making the call.

I would like to know how they figured i owed them and drop it on me in one lump sum.

Lucky it was a relatively small amount...

I've had the same, HMRC say I owe them £617. Of which £363 was from the year 2022-23 & £253 from 2023-24. My tax code has been reduced considerably. The reason I owe them is because I earned too much interest on my savings. You can only earn £1000 interest a year without paying tax ,Unless it's in an ISA, which is obviously tax free.

The banks tell them how much interest they pay you at the end of each tax year, so they know if you've gone over a £1000.

Check on the letter they sent you it will say untaxed interest. It could be the reason they have charged you.

Your tax code is not wrong, it reflects your tax payments due this year, including any arrears from last year.  They are doing you a favour - they could have demanded the 210 quid paid in 14 days.  Instead you get to pay it over the rest of the year interest free.

The "Let's Be Having You" podcast, the 00s successor to Quickly Kevin.

I know that not listening to it is an option, but sometimes it's quite enjoyable, and the Ray Stubbs episode was really good to hear his stories. But just to get it off my chest, a quick list of the gripes:

  • A Beautiful Day instrumental is far too long between the intro and them talking. It goes on forever
  • The correspondence is absolutely rubbish, and when they do have it they go off on weird tangents
  • The music used for how to get in touch is some kind of 1920s circus music style?? It's nowhere near 00s
  • The quiz at the end of rubbish because they persist with 11v11 line ups when they know eff all. They chose a 1990s (1990s!!!!!!) Liverpool game v a niche Eastern European team for the Ray Stubbs episode. Absolute bollocks
  • The general banter and chemistry just seems... off? Compared to QK it's not in the same league

Despite this whining I'll persist with it, but I can't see it lasting more than four series. Just doesn't have the warmth or humour as its predecessor.

The get in touch music is sports report off 5 live i think?? Agreed not v 00s though!

I just dont think its a very good podcast. Chris isnt funny or inquisitive enough to lead it, tbh I think QK could of survived without him and the guy playing the part of the Michael Marden type just has a really annoying voice. Atm just seems like a vehicle for Alex and Chris to chat about Arsenal and West Ham respectively.. None of the guests have been very interesting. There are so many weird and wonderful stories from further down the pyramid in that decade, Doncaster, Hull, Swansea etc but all they talk about is the Premier League, at a push a championship promotion

Just been hit with a £1034 fine and 6pts on my license for failing to name myself as a driver for a traffic offence, unfortunately all my post went to my previous address.
I changed my driving licence but unfortunately not my log book (huge mistake)

Ive appealed due to my ignorance of proceedings but this can take up to 6 months for the court to decide if they will reopen my case.
I paid the fine straight away as the threat was bailiffs, prison etc.

The letter from the court was the only one that found its way to my new address, the “offence” took place September last year.
After much ringing around I eventually found out what the original offence was and it was careless driving as I allegedly drove too close to a cyclist who must have reported me, being a cyclist myself I always take care passing cyclists.
Silly and expensive mistake of mine not changing my log book. 😩

Have you been advised to make a statutory declaration? In other words you were convicted without you being aware of the case, because correspondence sent by the police/ court was sent to a previous address and you make a sworn statement to that effect. If the courts accepts it they will reopen your case.  Pleading guilty normally reduces your fine by 33% so a fair chunk off that big fine.  I worked in a magistrates court for a number of years, so saw hundreds of these cases.

I’ve claimed ignorance of proceedings as I was unable to plead guilty or not guilty. Loathed to plead guilty though but I guess it’s the sensible thing to do

If/when you get your case reopened you should be sent whatever evidence was supplied to the court.  Difficult to plead without seeing that first.

What a ***** of a cyclist they are. What do they gain out of you getting points and a huge fine?

Why is the fine even that big?! Madness it costs you that much.

Be interesting to see what footage they have, which, as the alleged perpetrator, you would have a right to see presumably?

Yeah I guess calling it not a very good podcast is an appropriate way of summing it up.

Always smacked to me of Chris not wanting to give up QK but the other two did, so he's started this and it just doesn't work. The thing that made QK such a success, aside from the guests and correspondence, was the three's clear passion for that decade of football. It's simply not replicated in this one and it's a damn shame cos it had so much potential.

Not commenting on the specific situation  here as I obviously don't know the details, but you don't think cyclists should be able to report drivers making dangerous passes?

I think they should if it warrants it. But the punishment doesn't seem to fit the crime. It's a hefty amount!

What properly grind my gears. When your other half has an awful cold with shivers, fever and not sleeping well. So you let them rest in bed all day to recover. You take care of the kids, housework etc...

You then get it, same symptoms and it's all of a sudden 'man flu' like you're making it up. Yet you still have to do jobs.

Yes I'm annoyed.

Reading the post I think the fine and/or points are made significantly worse by not naming himself, which is obviously just very unfortunate.

Bit in bold is hitting th enail on the head for me.. Atm every story or anecdote just descends into Alex saying "I was at that game" then two mins chatting about a meaningless Arsenal match.

I know he has a billion podcasts but if you had someone like Ellis James heading this up then tonally it would be infinitely better.

Football fans calling other human beings 'cucks'.

Proper "alpha male" bigot (usually against more demographics than simply women) behaviour, yes.

The fine and points are for not replying to the DVLA and police due to moving house and not responding to them, my fault, I had no idea of the proceedings against me, not sure what the careless driving evidence is at the moment.

Funny thing is I’m a cyclist myself and am always careful around cyclists, I can’t remember the incident and have yet to see the evidence due to my oversight of not changing the address on my log book (only did my license)
