Ford Super Sunday Posted 20 March 2009 Posted 20 March 2009 Following Hot on the heels of the news that Hobbs is subject to a £400k bid from us to Liverpool... As everyone knows, we have a lot of loan signings at the club (well, compared to some clubs anyway) Just to list them.. Kerrea Gilbert Jack Hobbs David Martin Wayne Brown Tom Cleverly Tony Warner Of these, who would you try and make genuine attempts to sign permernantly, or which player would you at least try and get on another season long loan. Personally, I would have Gilbert as well as Hobbs. He does tend to have legs that move faster than Michael Flatley at times, but he is another who has soundly improved over the course of the season. Of course, with us losing £14m, what will happen signing wise, will it be a case of more loans this summer, or will there be genuine attempts to splash the cash like the summer of 2007?
davieG Posted 20 March 2009 Posted 20 March 2009 I'd be extremely disappointed if we go for Brown or Warner - I feel both are past their Championship sell by date.
clazkel Posted 20 March 2009 Posted 20 March 2009 Hobbs and Cleverly are a must, i think they will cut it in the championship, and Gilbert should do ok aswell.
SamL Posted 20 March 2009 Posted 20 March 2009 I'd definitely go for Gilbert, Hobbs and Cleverley, although I'm still undecided about Martin.
surrifox Posted 20 March 2009 Posted 20 March 2009 I'd be extremely disappointed if we go for Brown or Warner - I feel both are past their Championship sell by date. absolutely, although I thought that we had pretty much agreed to take Brown at the end of the season
davieG Posted 20 March 2009 Posted 20 March 2009 absolutely, although I thought that we had pretty much agreed to take Brown at the end of the season Apparently and unfortunately!
Ric Flair Posted 20 March 2009 Posted 20 March 2009 Finally, it's Tom Cleverley, right in front of my eyes, can't believe it.
Jaspa Posted 20 March 2009 Posted 20 March 2009 Theres some pretty mixed reactions in this link from arsenal fans on gilbert Here Personaly i can see him turning into a decent player, he has pace, he can cross(occasionaly) and he does do well in defence.
Asha Posted 20 March 2009 Posted 20 March 2009 I'd hope we sign Hobbs, Gilbert and possibly Martin as keeper backup, out of the loanees. I'd rather try and sign Cleverley on a further loan period than try and sign him permanently, at the minute anyway. Plus I doubt Man Utd would sell. I also think we have quite a small squad really when you take out the MANY players that will be surplus next season. i.e. Edworthy, Clemence, Logan, Wesolowski, N'Gotty, Worley...the list goes on. However, bringing in over 10 players would be a bad thing...we have the basis of a good squad, just need the right amount of players adding in. Hopefully just 6/7 additions as well as the loanees I mentioned.
J.Lisemore Posted 20 March 2009 Posted 20 March 2009 Cleverley, Hobbs and Gilbert. And for crying out loud, can we just sign a decent goalkeeper on a permanant deal please. <_<
Joe. Posted 20 March 2009 Posted 20 March 2009 I'd go for Hobbs and Gilbert definitely, and possibly Martin as a second choice goalkeeper for next season. Not sure how he'd like that though... As for the others, I'm unconvinced. Cleverley wouldn't cut it in the Championship in my opinion, he's just not consistent enough. Brown I'm unsure of too, but being fair we've barely seen him play.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 20 March 2009 Posted 20 March 2009 Gilbert, Hobbs, Cleverley, and Martin would all be useful next season.
ousefox Posted 20 March 2009 Posted 20 March 2009 I would definitely get Hobbs, Gilbert and Martin(if hendo goes). I cannot see Man UTD letting us have Cleverly.
Thracian Posted 20 March 2009 Posted 20 March 2009 Hobbs and Cleverley are the pick. But we'll need a footballer with Hobbs and more consistency from Cleverley.
Alf Bentley Posted 20 March 2009 Posted 20 March 2009 My reply re. loanees depends entirely on what summer budget NP gets from MM. Because, if promoted, I reckon the priorities for major summer signings lie in other positions: 1) A fast, mobile goalscorer (could play with either Fryatt or Howard; can't see the Steve & Matty pairing prospering at a higher level) 2) A tough, hardworking defensive midfielder who can pass 3) An attacking midfielder with a bit of creativity and/or penetration Unless MM is more generous than I anticipate, those 3 purchases would consume most of the budget. For the record: - Hobbs: buy or loan if possible, but centre back is far from top priority - Gilbert: Buy or loan if possible, and might be cheaper to buy than Hobbs - Brown: Haven't seen enough to judge, but has a good reputation, so wouldn't write him off yet, especially as we'd be on the defensive more in Championship. A tough, experienced campaigner could be v. useful...esp. one who would probably come cheap-ish. - Cleverley: I'd expect him to want to fight to be a fringe squad player at Man U next season, maybe playing in cup games etc. Can't see them selling him yet. If a loan is available, take it up. - Martin: Another season-long loanee keeper (Martin or A.N. Other) could be a good idea if money is tight. There are a lot of decent keepers at clubs in top 2 divs not getting 1st team action...
Webbo Posted 21 March 2009 Posted 21 March 2009 I believe that when you borrow a player from another club you usually have to pay a loan fee. When you have a player like Martin who probably wouldn't cost an enormous fee to buy, you have to do the sums and see if it would be cheaper in the long run to buy.
Dames Posted 21 March 2009 Posted 21 March 2009 Hobbs, Cleverly, Gilbert and Martin (Some might disagree but we do need a goalkeeper next season and no better than to start with the tried and tested.)
StanSP Posted 21 March 2009 Posted 21 March 2009 Cleverley, Hobbs and Gilbert. And for crying out loud, can we just sign a decent goalkeeper on a permanant deal please. <_< Fulop Probably get injured in first game of the season though . But I think a couple of weeks ago Mandaric said he is happy to back NP's transfer wishes and is happy to cough up cash to do so. Pearson is sensible in his signings (as we have seen this year) so I don't think he will blow it all away. Look out for a couple relatively unknown Tunchev-esque signings, who we know hardly anything about but turn out to be solid. Either that or lower league Prem players who don't like being in relegation battles all season long.

I'd be surprised if we sign any of them other than on loan - Ferguson likes Cleverly, Martin could be given a chance at Liverpool, as could Kerry at Arsenal, but not yet.. so they may be able to stay on for another season. I'd like to see us spend a bit (if there's anything to spend) on a proven championship striker because I still think that Fryatt/Steve are not Championship quality
Trav Le Bleu Posted 21 March 2009 Posted 21 March 2009 Anyone who thinks we can sign Cleverley is deluded. Maybe on a season-long loan, just maybe, but I can't even see that happening.
Father Ted Posted 21 March 2009 Posted 21 March 2009 Sign Hobbs, Gilbert, Cleverley and Warner. No to Martin and I've not seen too much of Wayne Brown but next year we should have Tunch, Hobbsy and Morrison as back-up.
NorthernFox Posted 21 March 2009 Posted 21 March 2009 Ive been on the juice all day (so judgement may be clouded!) but especially if they drop I'd like Wes Hoolahan from Norwich, Wilbraham from MK Dons if they dont go up and go back to Sheff Utd for Hendrie.

I was thinking about that earlier and was saying that if we go up and Mk Dons mess up then we should go for Wilbraham and maybe look at a couple of others at Mk Dons.
