Adebayor: At this stage in my career it’s about money

Emmanuel Adebayor has risked alienating himself from Arsenal fans following an interview serialised in the Daily Mail where he suggested at this stage in his career, money is all important.

The Togolese striker is asked by the BBC Africa Sports editor, Farayi Mungazi: ‘How important is money to footballers? A lot of them say it is not about the money. Is that true?’ to which the player, heavily linked with a move to AC Milan and Barcelona, replied:

“It is not true, it is about money.”

“You are talking about in life and it is about money. When we are young, of course we played because we loved the game, we play because we were passionate about the game.”

“But now as soon as you reach a stage where you are professional and playing Champions League, after all those things we are talking about money.”

“If it is not because of money, what am I going to be playing for Arsenal for? If it is not because of money I don't think I would go to Arsenal to play. I would stay in my country, I would stay Lome where everyone loves me.”

“If its not because of money, I would not have come to Europe.”

Adebayor has put in a string of below par performances recently and has at times looked disinterested. Last week the former Monaco striker revealed that he is in regularly contact with AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani.

No new news there. Didn't he hold Arsenal ransom last summer wanting silly wages and a massive contract when he was on dough already?

Tbh I'd rather read that than some crap about how much he loves the Arsenal fans just before he signs for AC Milan 2 days later.

Fair play to him.

Money makes the world go round n that, at least he'll admit it.

I don't think he realizes how good he has it. He comes from a poor country and grew up in poverty, so I would have thought he would have been a bit more appreciative of where he is now and what he is earning.

What a tool.

I would of thought it's the opposite, they already have millions.

What an arsehole, he must easily be a millionaire, and he's saying it's all about money :crylaugh:

This sums it up pretty well:

“If it is not because of money, what am I going to be playing for Arsenal for? If it is not because of money I don't think I would go to Arsenal to play. I would stay in my country, I would stay Lome where everyone loves me.”

Can't really say I'm surprised to be honest

He has his priorities dead right. You look after your family first. If I could move and do the same job for more money I would - and will. If I knew my earning capapcity would plummet in a few years I would be making damn sure I bank every penny I can. Good on him.

Whether it is in his best interests to come out and say it is a different matter.

If I was on 25k a week playing for Leicester, and Coventry came along and offered me 50k a week, I would pack my bags and sign for the shower of cunts down the road. That doesn't make me any less of a Leicester fan, it just makes me a greedy bastard. I just wouldn't be stupid enough to come out and say it in public.

there has to be a balance, obviously from togo to Europe, that's fair enough. He can earn money for his family and what not.

However, once you reach a stage, it's sad to see that's what footballers care about. I mean footballers shouldn't move for money, they should move for trophies and winning things.
