Rams keen to extend Campbell loan

Derby County are hoping that they will be able to extend DJ Campbell's loan spell from Leicester City until the end of the season.

Campbell scored twice in the Rams' 3-0 win at Peterborough on Saturday to take his tally to three goals in seven Championship appearances since arriving at Pride Park in late November.

His loan expires at the end of the month and Derby boss Nigel Clough plans talks with City counterpart Nigel Pearson about extending the 28-year-old's stay.

"We've got a couple of weeks until he's up. We'd like to keep him certainly until the end of the season, which is as far as we're thinking at the moment," said Clough.

"We'll be talking about that and it will depend on incomings and outgoings as well and if he wants to stay.

"We've got a few strikers available and had Rob Hulse sitting on the bench on Saturday, so it will probably depends on what happens with a couple of others."

But surely they'd get one if they were good enough?

Thats the theory. Every manager has their favourites tho. I am not saying DJ is a class act but the fact he can score for blackpool and derby in this division suggests he is good enough for our first team or as sub as we only have one striker scoring regurly.

On-loan striker DJ Campbell admits he is unsure whether his immediate future lies at Leicester or Derby.

The 28-year-old is set to return to his parent club in two weeks when his loan spell with the Rams expires. Derby boss Nigel Clough is keen to keep Campbell until the end of the season and the player is enjoying his stay at Pride Park.

He told the Burton Mail: "I don't know what will happen. Apparently, Leicester want me back at the end of the month but I'm happy here as I'm playing and I'm scoring goals. We'll see what happens at the end of January but I'd like to stay longer."

He added: "When I left, (Leicester manager) Nigel Pearson said he only wanted me to go for a month and wanted me back. But things can change so we'll have to see.

"There's nothing I can do about it. Leicester own my contract, so it's up to them."

His double was against 9 men hardly wow factor, surprised he managed to stay onside!

He had a great game before the sendings off and was the best player on the pitch.

Only offside once that I recall too.

:D You'll never convince Foxestalk fans of that. Their minds were made up long ago. And judging by the little time he's had on the pitch Pearson seems no different. Yethad he been played enough to be sharp DJ has far more goals in him than most of our options and his pace is much more what we need to unhinge defences who are well used to our predictable style.

...based purely on his onfield performances and behind the scenes histrionics though.

Leicester City's never getting the best out of DJ is, I'm sure, more down to their failings than his. Other people seem to manage it but then they seem to play him regularly for a start and, doubtless, in teams formed to deliver a sensible aproach to attacking.

What we would give for anyone apart from Fryatt to muster DJ's 12 in 27 ratio of goals per game at Blackpool/Derby an does that not suggest to you that something is wrong with our use of the lad - or lack of use - rather than his ability?

As for his so-called histrionics I happen to know there are two sides to that.

Spot on. You're right Thracian about the stubbornness of some posters and it wouldn't surprise me if these same people want to see him fail/do badly just to prove a point.

The point is he scores where ever we send him on loan and these people don't want to acknowledge it and base their opinions on the season where even our main man Fryatt couldn't score in a brothel.

In hindsight we shouldn't of wasted our cash on Gallagher and just kept DJ.

I'm still trying to find any part of Gallagher's record that suggests he's a striker anyway! :D

But you're forgetting he's versatile

I've been saying it all along. Gradel, Adams and DJ are all suffering from a big transfer mistake by Pearson. Why oh why we play him on the wing and then loan our natural wingers out is beyond me. Me thinks Milan wouldn't be a happy bunny finding out the transfer we spent around a third of our budget on isin't all he's cracked up to be so hey "lets stick him on the wing at the expense of two natural wingers to justify the signing".

Whoever is to blame, it's time to move on and consign Campbell to the history books of LCFC.

DJ quoted in the Merc saying NP wants him back at the end of his current loan spell. I think this may be NP trying to force

the issue hoping Derby or someone else will make a permanent move.

And if DJ wants to go so much all he needs to do is drop his wage demands and I am sure there would then be some takers. Hasn't been willing to do that so far though. Makes me wonder if he is holding out for a pay off from us.
