Euro 2012

There's no point me posting my ideas for a squad right now for two reasons:

1. It'd be a push to even claim we've 11 players to choose from.

2. Toshack will probably pick Barry Town U11s any way.

I do rate Cattermole, seems a solid player.

Crouchback’s England squad :

Joe Hart

Micah Richards - Roger Johnson - Gary Cahill - Ashley Cole

Theo Walcott - Jack Rodwell - Adam Johnson

Darren Bent - Cameron Jerome - Jermain Defoe

Lee Camp

Glen Johnson

Chris Smalling

Jack Wilshere

James Milner

Peter Whittingham

Andy Carroll

Is that serious?! Talk about lightweight midfield!

Smalling isn't even close yet imo. & Whittingham? & Jerome?

Some decent shouts in there otherwise

Please, please, please, please, please let there be no more international withdrawals.

So what's the score going to be against Bulgaria, England fans?

(I'm a silly twat, how did I miss the other thread? I started the fucking thing as well. Nightmare. Merge this would you? =P)

Either a morale-boosting 4-0 or an insipid 0-0.

I'm going to be brave and say 0 - 2 Wales. Everyone will be fit, Bellers and Bale will perform; the former will score and the latter will set up Morrison to get his first international goal.

We'll look shakey at the back but, lacking Jovetic, they'll flatter to deceive.

Midfield maestro Hakan Yakin will miss the first few Euro 2012 qualifying games, and Streller is doubtful, but should be cleared to play alongside FC Basel teammate Alex Frei.

Don't know if playing Australia on Friday evening will do the squad any good - England is only four further days away.

The central defense seems to be the biggest problem so far. No Djourou or Senderos available and Von Bergen doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence.

For the Tuesday matchup, I sense Hitzfeld will go for something like this:

Benaglio

Spycher

Von Bergen

Grichting

Lichtsteiner

Barnetta

Fernandes

Behrami

Inler

Streller

Frei

Subs: Woelfli, Ziegler, Affolter, Sutter, Costanzo, Shaqiri, Bunjaku

We have an overabundance of good midfielders this time around - Stocker, Derdiyok, Schwegler also fighting for a starting place.

You think we'll get the parked bus treatment on Tuesday, Alex?

If Suisse counter-act well enough, it'll be a two-goal victory to yourselves.

I want the following 11 Friday night

Hart

Johnson

Jagielka (if fit)

Cahill

Cole

Walcott

Milner

Barry (I suppose)

Johnson

Gerrard

Rooney

...

Don't know about our chances, it's always a gamble with this Swiss side. One day, they can come up with spectacular performances against top-flight international squads (see the game against Spain at this year's WC), the next day fade facing so-called weaker opposition (e.g. "The Honduras Debacle").

Main thing to focus on is confidence - sometimes, we screw it up for ourselves going into a game, simply having too much respect.

I can see this being a possible scenario since we're playing England in a qualifying group for a major tournament for the very first time.

Nerves and all...

EDIT: Just read that keeper Benaglio is doubtful for Tuesday, as his girlfriend is pregnant and the baby expected to be born around that day.

How do you lot fancy your chances then with your rather rejuvenated starting eleven?

Been pondering getting tickets for the two first home matches on Tuesday and then in Mid-October for the Wales matchup.

Fancy seeing Andy King in a red shirt in person.

I wouldn't pay only to see Andy King. Absolutely no guaranties he'll play. Particually once Ramsey and Collison get back.

You can't get tickets for separate games over here. Either you pay for both the England and Wales game together, or you left with watching the game on telly.

Sorry there was nothing spectatular about that display, you carved out one chance the entire game and then defended for your lives and Spain still should of won. Very lucky, very boring.

I meant the result, because no one fancied Switzerland to beat the European Champions at the World Cup.

Not even the Swiss themselves.

Besides, we had more than one chance, although they were sparse and came towards the end of the game.

If I remember correctly, Inler should've buried one after the first goal, but hit the post.

Brilliant that Lampard is out, a good chance to freshen the midfield up.

I'd play 4-4-2 against these nations.

Hart

Johnson Dawson Cahill Cole

Milner Gerrard Barry Johnson

Walcott Rooney

I'd be asking Walcott to play a very central and direct role, which I think is his future and which I think on his current form he is well capable of. But if we're under the cosh he can withdraw to the flanks, Milner can tuck in and it can turn into a 4-5-1 with Barry holding. Or even, leave Walcott up front as the lone striker and allow Rooney to drop into midfield. Either way.

The result itself granted was fantastic but on another day they would of beat you 4-1, it wasn't a particular good performance. Certainly was no advert for Swiss football and I don't see you doing it any time soon. Except against us maybe and we'll probably deserve to lose anyway!

That's fairly negative, isn't it?

I expect England to perform well again - they've done it in every qualifying stage since 1966.

No idea whether this has already been asked or not, but why is this being played on a Friday?

I might have this wrong but i believe all of the qualifiers are now played on a friday or a monday/tuesday (not sure) from now on.

Posted

Yeah to allow players to return to their clubs to prepare in a better way for the domestic fixtures.

Apparently most managers of clubs were in favour of the Friday/Tuesday match-ups.

Posted

Which is a real ballache if your national team happens to play a three or four hour train journey away and the games are going to end around ten.

Thanks, UEFA.

As long as England labour through qualifying and produce one or two results along the way which make everyone expect them to be a major force in Euro 2012, then I don't have a problem with them qualifying and going out in the group stages or the first knockout round. Much to everyone's bitter disappointment and near-suicidal disgust.
