This reminds me of when i used to manage a care home for adults with learning disabilities... It was Saturday and all of the residents were settling down to watch tv and they were watching ' an audience with' and on this occasion it was an audience with the beegees.  They started playing one  of the songs  and so i said to the resident next to me ( who was also hard of hearing) " this one is called staying alive" he said " what?" so i repeated " staying alive" to which he said " oo... yeah.. good idea that." I just left it there. And had to internally surpress a large burst of laughter until i finished work that night....

Some of those articles are correct. The way that the whole country bows down to the altar of consumerism for a month not because of the wee baby Jesus or pagan feasting rituals but because it's expected of us is scary when you think on it. I'm sure many of us don't need any new speakers or a toy robot or a wittled figurine of a hippo but resources have been used to create those things for no other reason than to satisfy our need for material satisfaction. I'm aware I sound like a tinfoil-topped maniac in a thread for amusing jpegs but I enjoy a loony left rant sometimes.

No I get what you are saying, however I don't participate in Christmas for the material gain (or loss in my case). I enjoy the family and friends culture, a bit of quality time with the children and a bloody good piss up. The rest is just a consequence.

Also I would be wearing socks with holes in all year round if it wasn't for Santa.
