USA V England

Given their poor record in this kind of fixture an England win could be seen as a bloody miracle.

But no miracles for me either way it will be England 1 (Crouch) V (Altidore) 1 USA

Not unlikely by any means. I still expect England to scrape this 2-1, probably with a set piece goal in the dying minutes.

A tough game to start with given how the US beat Spain in the Confederations Cup last year, and they shouldn't be underestimated. Nor though, should they be feared.

England have the talent and ability to beat them with some breathing space if they turn up in the right mood, in spite of some poor performances in the build-up against Japan and the first half against Mexico. Capello seems to have a knack of raising the players for the big occasions, (Croatia home and away in the qualifiers) and I can see a win to kick off the campaign.

2-1 to England with goals from Rooney and Gerrard for England, with Donovan notching the US consolation.

USA's back four isn't the greatest so getting at the defence from the word go is probably the best way forward. However they are pretty strong going forward with the likes of Dempsey and Donovan so our defence needs to be on top form also. I'm going to be optimistic and go for a 2-0 victory. Gerrard with the 1st and Crouch with the 2nd

This game will be all about attitude and temperament. If England are edgy and off the pace you could well be right, in fact in those circumstances it could even be worse for England.

Looking from the outside, as we all must, the England squad appears to be jittery and uncertain, as indeed does the manager. All the certainty and ruthlessness that saw us cruise to easy qualification seems to have gone. Walcott, so important in qualification is out, our most reliable and disciplined midfielder is crocked, the Heskey / Rooney combination is being questioned and Upson, first reserve defender (in effect) finds himself sliding down the pecking order.

Of course on the inside, Don Fabio may have everything under control with all the players knowing exactly what their role is and absolutely raring to go, in which case they could well tear the USA a new one.

Still just a few more days and all will be revealed...:trumpet:

Poor record? Under Capello, we have 75% winning rate.

Lost against France, Spain, Brazil and Ukraine (only bad result). Interestingly, although it doesn't apply to a WC all away from home.

Draws against Holland away and Czech Republic.

If you were applying to the opening game, the record since 1982 isn't that bad either. W3 D2 L1.

3-1 England, they're decent going forward, but not solid at the back.

Rooney (2) & Lampard for England, Donavon for the USA.

England 2 USA 0. Rooney and Joe Cole with the goals

Ooh the irony.

Anyway 2-1 to England Joe Cole cutting in from the left and his shot rebounding in off the post on the 37th minute. Heskey in the 59th minute after a clearance from the USA keeper hits him on the head while bending down to tie his shoelace.

I've got a bad feeling about this, I think the USA could sneak it but I'm going for a 1-1.

I dont think I've ever wanted England to win so much!!!!

Its going to be a nightmare for me if we lose!

I've only got time for a quick post... Please note that the U.S.'S back line looks very shaky now. Oguchi Onyewu hasn't played a 90-minute game in about a year, and he's not certain to be ready to do so now. Jay DeMerit, who shut down Spain in South Africa last summer, has been struggling with an eye problem (and is still only a Championship-quality defender). The other CB option, Clarence Goodson, is tall, but young and still not necessarily ready for this level. If Maurice Edu has to drop back and cover at CB, we*ve really run out of options.

At wing back, more questions (and less answers). It looks like Carlos Bocanegra at LB and Steve Cherundolo at) are the default option after some miserable performances by the other wing backs in the build-up to the World Cup. Jonathan Spector has brought his terrible West Ham form with him to the U.S. nats. Heaven help us if Jonathan Bornstein sees the field at left back--he's been ripped apart in every recent game for us. DaMarcus Beasley is a wild-card option for left back.

Despite Jozy's injury scare and the lack of international pedigree among our not-very-well-known other forwards, we are still a capable team going forward and IMO an excellent counter-attacking team. But successful CA requires strong defense in the center of the pitch and wing backs that hold their ground to force tame crosses that our CBs will handle easily. I'm nervous about our abiliy to do that now (we certainly won't be able to control possession).

Our boys will be pumped up for this game--that's one necessary ingredient for an upset--but if I had to bet on a scoreline, I'd have a serious look on the odds of England 3:1 USA.

My balls are not crystal, haven't the faintest idea how it will go.

As I say elsewhere, that is why we play the game, to find out!

Rooney and Joe Cole will take their defense apart early on, and the goals will come. England 4-1 USA. Amongst the goals will be a Lampard Penalty, Gerrard from Range and Rooney.

I envy the crystaline clarity of your ball(s).

I hope they are on good form...

Did I mention young Lennon will be a handful, but mostly drawing the USA defense away - until he wins the penalty which Lampard will put away.

2-1 England.

We'll go 1-0 up just before half time through Rooney, come out sloppy, they equalise, then either King or Terry will score from a corner.

If we are serious about being one of the favourites to win the competition we should be looking to beat everyone in our group relatively comfortably, but then again, this is England we are talking about :S

2-1 to England for me

After looking at USA's squad can't say they have any top world class players. England 3-0. Rooney x2 and Cole.

Thats just it they dont, but they work very well as a team, you cant beat spain if you don't.

Uninspiring dull 2-0 win [like versus Mexico, Japan and Egypt].

Joe Cole and Wayne Rooney.

Shouldn't this thread be USA v Man Utd? :dunno:

AMERICA'S clueless stars scored a series of own goals when quizzed about the World Cup.

High School Musical actor Zac Efron, 22, said he couldn't wait for the States' game on Saturday - against MAN UNITED.

Jason Segel, 30, called England's team "the UK" and got his dates wrong, saying: "My best friend is British and left the room crying five years ago during the World Cup."

Jackie Chan, 56, said among his tips to win the cup were "Barcelona and Milan".

Other Hollywood stars like Eva Mendes, 36, and Vanessa Hudgens, 21, had no idea the tournament was on.

But rapper Snoop Dogg, 38, was more knowledgable. He said: "I believe Brazil are going to win."

They can't be serious, surely? :dunno::giggle:
