Edmund Posted 13 July 2010 Posted 13 July 2010 http://www.sunderlandecho.com/sport/Bruce39s-search-for-a-striker.6415985.jp Steve Bruce is looking for a striker after admitting he could allow Martyn Waghorn to leave Sunderland again on loan. However, Bruce indicated yesterday that the 20-year-old's first-team chances might be limited on Wearside next season and that he is willing to send the South Shields youngster back out on a temporary deal, with former Foxes boss Nigel Pearson – now in charge at Hull City – reported to be leading the chase. Bruce said: "All of the Championship want Waghorn. It would only be a loan – I would never contemplate selling him. "When they've been away and come back, the last thing they want to do us play in the reserves."
hackneyfox Posted 13 July 2010 Posted 13 July 2010 Would he have enough ball skill for Sousa. And I can't see him wanting NFP's old loans
Fox You Forest Posted 13 July 2010 Posted 13 July 2010 It wouldn't surprise me if Bruce didn't want to loan him back to us again, doesn't want him getting too attached.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 13 July 2010 Posted 13 July 2010 Why say he isnt going back out on loan, then say he'd allow it?
Ric Flair Posted 13 July 2010 Posted 13 July 2010 I am probably in the minority but i'm not that fussed if Waghorn doesn't come back here. He progressed at Leicester but I never thought he was anywhere near as good as people made out. I also struggle to see where he'd fit in to Sousa's plans as it's evident that there's only going to be a couple of strikers needed given his past preferred formations at QPR and Swansea. Waghorn struggled to become first choice at Leicester until Fryatt got injured and even then he often failed to perform against the better teams in the division. Let Pearson have him, plus Bruce won't sell him so sod it.

I tend to agree with all of the above, but didnt have the balls to say it.I expect to get slated for it,but he is not a goal machine, just gives 110% week in.week out.
hackneyfox Posted 13 July 2010 Posted 13 July 2010 Agreed, that's why I mentioned his ball skills. I think Waghorn is more of a hustle and bustle player.
philayres200 Posted 13 July 2010 Posted 13 July 2010 Would he have enough ball skill for Sousa. And I can't see him wanting NFP's old loans I agree. Not good enough for us. Jay Simpson would be better, and can be bought. I know Waggy did ok for us, but we can now get better than him. Vaughn will be a better player as well in the future. I think big things are going to happen for us this season. There is no way Paulo came to us without decent money being available for some new players. We will get one or two 'out of contract' players of quality, one or two 'loanees' of quality, and two or three players of quality who will cost us, but all with a view to next season in the Premiership. Here are some dreams:- Carlos on loan from Porto, Buzsaky from QPR, Jay Simpson from Arsenal, Colace on contract, a new right back, and a real quality striker! Oh and how about Robert Pires as well! He hasn't got a new club yet. It may just be that when the rumour started that we were interested, then it was denied, that it was because this was a deal being organised by Paulo before Nigel Pearson had gone and Paulo had started with us. Pires and Sousa may even be chums. It's good to dream, and I can't ever remember dreaming like this since Muzzy et al, or even Keith Weller et al.
lcfcsnow Posted 13 July 2010 Posted 13 July 2010 Good player and should be a great player in the future but right now easily replaceable. Although the amount of times Pearson had him playing the lone striker role was abit unfair as he was was clearly struggling, remember him getting a red for a shocker of a tackle in one game down to the frustration.

Completely agree. He worked hard but that masked the fact that he wasnt particularly consistent. Obviously if we dont sign any other strikers this summer it would be of concern if Hull took him but i've got every faith that Sousa will sign us someone of a higher talent and goal potential than Waghorn.

Fox You Forest Posted 13 July 2010 Posted 13 July 2010 Its been a while since I read a mind numbingly stupid post. You can't have been on the site too much recently then.
dandannieldanok Posted 13 July 2010 Posted 13 July 2010 I'd love Waghorn back here but you can't blame him if he follows Pearson, he's used to the man and his system.
Matt Posted 13 July 2010 Posted 13 July 2010 I'd be well pissed off if I was Waghorn, I know he's South Shields lad, Childhood Sunderland fan and don't get me wrong if I was a Leicester but in Waghorn's situation it'd be a hard decision to make but I think i'd have to put a transfer request in because he's just being fucked about being told he will be in with a chance of playing next season and then a month or so later being told actually you probably won't feature so you can go out on loan again. Doubt we'll be getting him though, Hope to god he does come back, but can't see it. However this IS a casewhen 1 person, 1 manager is bigger than a club. I think Waghorn would rather work with Nigel Pearson than come back to Leicester City Football Club - And people say not 1 person is ever bigger than a club, I beg to differ.

It's not really a case of being bigger than the club. Players often follow managers because in effect that's who they work for, who's been party to their development, their opportunity to play. Sure he was at LCFC but if Pearson hadn't have wanted him he wouldn't have come. It becomes much more personal.
Edmund Posted 13 July 2010 Author Posted 13 July 2010 He might favour us due to the fact he may have become good friends with the other players.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 13 July 2010 Posted 13 July 2010 Would like to see him back, but I never thought he was a key player last season, so wont be to disappointed.
Spiritwalker Posted 13 July 2010 Posted 13 July 2010 If Sousa does play 4-5-1 then strengthening up front becomes less of a priority.
Salieri Posted 13 July 2010 Posted 13 July 2010 He might favour us due to the fact he may have become good friends with the other players. My thoughts exactly. He obviously has a lot of respect for NP, but he seemed to really bond well with the lads, i'm sure they'd love to see him back. Personally i'd be chuffed to see him return, though i doubt Sousa will be interested.
Finchy Posted 13 July 2010 Posted 13 July 2010 Apparently been stretchered off in a pre season friendly tonight after scoring 2 goals. http://www.safc.com/news/20100629/live-text-munster-xi-v-sunderland_2256213_2080578
