DB11 Posted 9 November 2010 Posted 9 November 2010 From what I remember...... Good Hobbs Les Ferdinand Izzet
ajthefox Posted 9 November 2010 Posted 9 November 2010 In terms of who isn't obvious and hasn't been already said, Matt Elliott was 1.6 mil so not the cheapest, but scored both goals in our league cup win and contributed no end. Not a bargain but a very good buy imo. Richard Cresswell was 750k and only played in 8 games, 5 of which were as a sub. We made 500k back but a waste none the less.
Jacnah Posted 9 November 2010 Posted 9 November 2010 lots of greats..hard to beat Tony Cottee for value wastrels Junior lewis is my number 1, 2 & 3 Wise, as has already been so eloquently pointed out, was just a cock so doesn't even do well enough to get in the wastrels list....
shailen Posted 9 November 2010 Posted 9 November 2010 good izzet hobbs guppy bad Akinbiyi de Vries trevor benjamin
Captain... Posted 9 November 2010 Posted 9 November 2010 How about Mark Draper as value for money? Transfer Record at £1.25million, but more than doubled that selling him a year later for £3.5m, we don't often make a profit on players. At least a shrewd bit of business. I am trying to be obtuse though, you can't really look past Walsh, Izzet, Lennon, Savage and Grayson, maybe put Mike Whitlow in there another bargain at 250K for 5 years loyal service or Garry Parker. As for a waste of money, Akinbiyi has to be 1,2 and 3. Our transfer record by a long way and features heavily in the worst player ever list. I'll go for Ormondroyd and Phil Gee for Paul Kitson as another terrible bit of business. Finally Mark Robins will also have to go down as an expensive failure. £1 million for a very poor return in terms of goals.
Legend_in_blue Posted 9 November 2010 Posted 9 November 2010 Why has the name Kevin Ellison sprung to mind? I ought to have put him with Peter Canero in the other thread that was going last week...
DMU Fox Posted 9 November 2010 Posted 9 November 2010 For top 3 bargains in recent years then look no further than Izzet, Cottee & Dickov. All 3 were cracking bits of business in terms of their contributions considering how much we paid for them. For the worst signings, then Wise, Akinbyi (or however you spell it!) and DJ are all deservedly up there! PS. & hello by the way!
Captain... Posted 9 November 2010 Posted 9 November 2010 Why has the name Kevin Ellison sprung to mind? I ought to have put him with Peter Canero in the other thread that was going last week... How much did we pay for him? I didn't think it was much. Just thought of another bargain, Bruno Berner, free transfer, pretty much an ever present for 2 and a bit seasons, not too shabby.
rico Posted 9 November 2010 Posted 9 November 2010 bad signings Franz Carr Arnar Gunnlaugson Bobby Davidson bargains Pontus Kamaark Iwan Roberts Tony Cottee
Chairman of the Bored Posted 9 November 2010 Posted 9 November 2010 A couple of players signed in the Wallace era that were pure class and very, very cheap: Kevin MacDonald (about £15,000 from Inverness Caley as I recall) Ian Wilson (£20,000 from Elgin City) I also think Mark Wallington was a bargain. £30,000 from Walsall. 460 appearances. An older "bad buy". Roger Davies. Pretty sure we paid stupid money for him. The daft bat could only kick the way he was facing, and more times than not, he wasn't facing towards the opposition goal. As a centre forward that wasn't so smart.
Guest Basildon Fox Posted 9 November 2010 Posted 9 November 2010 bad signings Franz Carr Arnar Gunnlaugson Bobby Davidson bargains Pontus Kamaark Iwan Roberts Tony Cottee six goals in 25 games isn't the greatest but also not too shabby either for a 33 year old who cost just £50k. Also he was put in the shadow by the emerging talent of JJ. Certainly not the greatest ever signing but not in the same league as others. Whilst posting another few I forgot bad value. Nicky Mohan £300k and an absolute bag of cack. Little wanted Gareth Southgate for about £1m but was told we could not afford him so we got this joker instead. Middlesbrough must have been pissing themselves wondering how they actually managed to get any money at all for him. Rob Johnson & Tony Spearing. Not expensive but incredibly shit. Just awful. Edited for two good value. Paul Cooper & Kevin Poole. Both excellent keepers. Poole cost just £40k and I believe Cooper may well have been a freebie.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 9 November 2010 Posted 9 November 2010 Bargains: Izzet Keller Walsh Wastes: Akinbiyi Lewis Campbell
Corky Posted 9 November 2010 Posted 9 November 2010 Jacob Laursen can be added to my list of waste of money. What on earth possessed Bassett to sign him is beyond comprehension, terrible player.

Perhaps Bassett just didn't foresee him being a massive ringbit.
Corky Posted 9 November 2010 Posted 9 November 2010 400K for a Danish international with experience in English football maybe? Perhaps Bassett just didn't foresee him being a massive ringbit. He probably didn't in fairness, we were desperate at the time.
dan_84 Posted 10 November 2010 Posted 10 November 2010 Bargins 1, Muzzy Izzet 2, Steve Claridge 3, Mark Draper Worst Signings 1, Adi Akinbye 2, Darren Eadie 3, Lee Marshall
Guy Posted 10 November 2010 Posted 10 November 2010 In recent times Great signings/bargains (almost too many to mention!) Best three........Ian Marshall,Steve Claridge,Muzzy Izzett Near misses - Tony Cottee, Paul Dickov, Bruno Berner, Garry Parker, Spencer Prior, Kasey Keller, Neil Lennon, Mark Draper, Iwan Roberts, Les Ferdinand, Tim Flowers. Worst three signings Lee Marshall ("one for the future" - said by one Peter Taylor!) Nicky Mohan (poor defender, nowhere near good enough for a newly promoted team to the Premiership at the time in 1994) Ade Akinbiyi (enough said by others already!) Near misses - Junior Lewis (third division player playing in the Premiership, just because he was Peter Taylor's mate from Gillingham!), Arnar Gunlaughsson (vastly overpriced - O'Neill's worst buy), Dennis Wise (no desire to play for us, just came for the retirement money before heading off rather sharply to Millwall), DJ Campbell (paid over the odds for him, he played poorly for us whenever he did, slated the club while he was away from it on loan to other teams but always came back with his tail between his legs for his pay cheques), Trevor Benjamin (another Peter Taylor buy who actually did a job for us in the Championship but should never have played in our Premiership team under Taylor's guidance). I could go but the older players weren't signed for silly money back in the 70s and 80s so only the last two decades have applied here really.
Cant_Fox_You Posted 10 November 2010 Posted 10 November 2010 These arent my top three best bargains or flops these are just some i can think of 3 Bargains; Worthington Dickov (1st spell) King (Albeit we signed him as a schoolboy from Chelsea) 3 Bad Signings: Hossein Keobi Marcus Bent (on loan i know) DJ Campbell

What is the thinking behind Marcus Bent as a bad signing?
Cant_Fox_You Posted 11 November 2010 Posted 11 November 2010 He was ineffective whilst he was with us but thats just my humble opinion.
Finnegan Posted 11 November 2010 Posted 11 November 2010 DJ and Ade are by far the worst, anyone who hasn't named them is insane. And before Jehst comes wading in, Dudley could be as good as Pele but I'd maintain my stance. Regardless of his ability, the amount we paid for and to him for what we got out was staggering.
