davieG Posted 5 January 2011 Posted 5 January 2011 From the Merc City are continuing to talk to Spurs about Naughton's situation, while fellow loanees Roman Bednar and Curtis Davies have returned to West Brom and Aston Villa respectively. Bednar was hauled off at half-time during the defeat at Millwall eight days ago and is unlikely to be in Eriksson's plans again. The situation is different with Davies, who remains a target for City but wants Premier League football. Eriksson says he is targeting two more signings during the January transfer window. But he has reiterated that his criteria is only adding players who will improve the current squad. Eriksson said: "It is always difficult to take in top-quality players and especially in January. We don't need a lot of players in and, if we can get in two more players, we are okay. "I am also looking forward to when they close the transfer window because I never thought I had so many friends among agents around the world. They are calling every day." The City boss has swooped for Hibernian and Ivory Coast defender Sol Bamba in a £250,000 move, as well as confirming a loan move for Manchester City defender Ben Mee. Leicester are also weighing up whether to sign South Africa striker Bernard Parker after a fee was agreed with Dutch club FC Twente. Mee was on the bench for Monday's Championship win over Swansea – which lifted City up to 12th in the Championship table – while Bamba did not receive international clearance in time to feature against the Swans but is set to play a part against Manchester City. Eriksson moved for the pair following Cunningham's horror leg-break at Hull and a delay in the manager's attempts to secure longer loan stays for Davies and Naughton. "I thought it was important we took in defenders," said Eriksson. "We have lost Greg unfortunately and we don't know about Naughton and Davies, and I don't know when Miguel Vitor (hamstring) will be back either." Eriksson has likened 25-year-old Bamba's playing style to that of Davies, who is currently injured. The City boss included Bamba in his provisional World Cup squad when he was in charge of the Ivory Coast for last summer's tournament, and he appeared in Eriksson's first match in charge, a 2-2 friendly draw against Paraguay. However, Bamba, who started his professional career with French club Paris Saint-Germain, did not make the final 23-man squad. Bamba has made 75 appearances for Hibs following a previous two-season stay at Dunfermline. Eriksson said: "He is a little bit similar to Davies. He is strong, a good header of the ball and rather quick. "Technically, he is not Franz Beckenbauer but he is certainly okay." Mee has arrived at the Walkers Stadium on loan until the end of the season. He was a member of the Manchester City side which won the FA Youth Cup when Eriksson was in charge at Eastlands. Eriksson said: "Ben is strong and not that tall, but he is a fantastic football player. "He has a great left foot and can play centre-half and left-back as well."

davieG Posted 5 January 2011 Author Posted 5 January 2011 He must be referring to their relative ages though - surely!
Guest Posted 5 January 2011 Posted 5 January 2011 Does this mean that he is good technically just not on the level of Beckenbauer or that he is not very good technically?
Babylon Posted 5 January 2011 Posted 5 January 2011 Does this mean that he is good technically just not on the level of Beckenbauer or that he is not very good technically? I'm going for not very good.
thebartonfox Posted 5 January 2011 Posted 5 January 2011 The BBC gossip column says we are lining up a move to get Yakubu from Everton according to The Mail. I can't see it happening but would be a great signing for at this level if Sven could make it happen.
Guest Posted 5 January 2011 Posted 5 January 2011 I'm going for not very good. That's what I feared. Still as long as the player is aware of it, not too much of a problem. When he was compared with Davies I hoped it was a positive as Davies clearly "thinks" that he is technically skilled.
cc_star Posted 5 January 2011 Posted 5 January 2011 I hope I never see the disgraceful Davies at the Walkers again Played well until he thought he'd done enough to earn a chance at a Prem club then just gave up, culminating in walking out on us. Fook him! With Hobbs + Morrison looking like they are beginning to show they can form an understanding, and Samba + Mee being unknown quantities but looking like they'll definitely be playing more than just a bit-part I think we're OK in that position. We need to concentrate on securing Naughton & getting a replacement for Berner, and someone to stimulate the forward line, whether its a winger or a forward I'm not sure... Perhaps its waghorn
Finnegan Posted 5 January 2011 Posted 5 January 2011 Mee will replace Berner I imagine, reading that.
Babylon Posted 5 January 2011 Posted 5 January 2011 Well we need a right back also as Naughton can't play Man City. Spurs just recalled Walker from QPR so my bet is QPR will now want Naughton.
Babylon Posted 5 January 2011 Posted 5 January 2011 Naughton's one of them. If Naughton is one, and Davies and we want a striker... doesn't that make 3?
cc_star Posted 5 January 2011 Posted 5 January 2011 Wonder if its Harry just playing a bit of brinkmanship with us, kind of getting us to pony up some more cash No one wheels & deals like harry
Bert Posted 5 January 2011 Posted 5 January 2011 Davies will only be a loan. Naughton's wanted on a permanent.
Mack Posted 5 January 2011 Posted 5 January 2011 I think we need a back up keeper also, Logan could cost us points if Weale gets an injury.
Fox92 Posted 5 January 2011 Posted 5 January 2011 The BBC gossip column says we are lining up a move to get Yakubu from Everton according to The Mail. I can't see it happening but would be a great signing for at this level if Sven could make it happen. He would be a great signing, he is strong and a great finisher. As you said though, can't see it happening. My number one target is Charlie Austin. He scored again a few days ago against Charlton. Sven needs to take a look, he is a great finisher and good in the air. We need a striker...
Stevosevic Posted 5 January 2011 Posted 5 January 2011 Davies will only be a loan. Naughton's wanted on a permanent. Thanks Bert, once again. Am i right in thinking that if we sign Naughton or Davies they won't be as part of the two? I read it as if Sven is looking to add two to the current squad, including Davies?
Bettsj2 Posted 5 January 2011 Posted 5 January 2011 Thanks Bert, once again. Am i right in thinking that if we sign Naughton or Davies they won't be as part of the two? I read it as if Sven is looking to add two to the current squad, including Davies? Also Bert, when you say that Davies WILL be a loan, is it a done deal?

Need proven players at Championship level.
Fox 4 Life Posted 5 January 2011 Posted 5 January 2011 Signing Naughton permanently would be unreal, he is going to be a star. Looks like Kyle Walker is going to Villa so we need to move fast before someone else (even QPR) come in for him.
Adster Posted 5 January 2011 Posted 5 January 2011 He would be a great signing, he is strong and a great finisher. As you said though, can't see it happening. My number one target is Charlie Austin. surrifox Posted 5 January 2011 Posted 5 January 2011 I like SGE's style. I'm pretty sure everyone approved of his first loan signings; even if the Davies thing has gone slightly sour I think Sven showed the right level of ambition and more so with Naughton . When Kirkland turned out to be injured/unfit and Bednar turned out to be $hite he wasted no time getting rid of either. In Sven we do indeed trust and I am sure he will not waste the club's money on the likes of Carew or Yakubu and will only sign Naughton if rednapp doesn't try to stitch him up.
