Guest NGoloMode Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 I definitely wouldn't have done that. Actually I think Sven is looking to enter us in the Premier Reserve League next season so we need some players for that?
Babylon Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 I don't have a problem him being back up, so long as he's not first choice backup. I'm hoping we'll sign another CM at some point and one of the current three will then be first choice back up and he's only around in emergencies.
lcfcsnow Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 Pathetic. He and Steve Howard are nothing but an hindrance.
LeeTheFox Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 what does anyone see in him? ive met him hes a nice guy but im afraid to say it but hes just not good enough for us in the posistion we are in.
teblin Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 Its hard to sign players that are happy being back up for the first time and that have the experience playing at this level. So makes sense really.
MikeyT Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 Leicester City Football Club is delighted to announce that Matt Oakley has signed a new contract, keeping him with the Foxes until June 2012. Club Captain for the last three seasons, the 33-year-old midfielder has been an invaluable leader for the Club both on and off the pitch and remains a significant part of Sven-Goran Eriksson's plans for next season. Eriksson told lcfc.com: "I am very happy that we have agreed an extension with Matt. He is not only a good football player, but he is an excellent professional. "It is important for us to have people like Matt around the club, especially as we often have a young team out on the pitch. He has a positive influence on his colleagues and his experience in the game will be invaluable for us." A January arrival from Derby County in 2008, Matt has firmly established himself as a vital part of the Foxes squad in the last three years, making 140 appearances in a City shirt and passing 500 career appearances in the process. Appointed captain ahead of his first full season in 2008/09, Oakley led City to the League 1 title and back into the Championship at the first attempt, before making further solid contributions in the two subsequent campaigns, as City strive for promotion to the Premier League. On signing his new contract, Oakley told lcfc.com: "I've had three fantastic years with Leicester, during which the Club has made huge progress on the road back to the top flight - the level our supporters deserve to see City playing at. "With the ambition of the owners, the vision of the manager and the talent in our squad, it seems only a matter of time before we achieve our ambition of Premier League football and I'm delighted I'll have the opportunity to continue to be part of the journey."
Haydos Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 Agree with Babs, alright as backup and probably good experienced head around the training ground. Hope his wage has dropped though, he's 34 this summer and with reduced playing responsibility he shouldn't be hanging on to the same wage.
DanTheFox07 Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 Looks like sven is resigned to another year in the championship already then...
MPH Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 The only plausible explanation is that we are preparing for life in the championship
Uncle Phil Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 I don't have a problem him being back up, so long as he's not first choice backup. I'm hoping we'll sign another CM at some point and one of the current three will then be first choice back up and he's only around in emergencies. Its hard to sign players that are happy being back up for the first time and that have the experience playing at this level. So makes sense really. Exactly, who else are we going to get that's going to be relatively happy playing back up to the first team. Why is everyone having a ****ing hissy fit over this? It's not like he's gonna be starting every game now is it.
hackneyfox Posted 24 March 2011 Author Posted 24 March 2011 Because he is 34, he has hardly cut it this season, so he'll be even further back next season, even if we don't go up.
Babylon Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 Because he is 34, he has hardly cut it this season, so he'll be even further back next season, even if we don't go up. People on here would have been happy with Chris Powell getting a playing contract extension every year just because he was a nice bloke. Oakley may well be as important to the squad unity as someone like Powell was, but he's not got all the hype built up around him on here like people did with Powell. Maybe that's a reason why Sven still wants him around, or maybe he thinks resources could be better spent next year, rather than forking out for a new back up player. None of us know for sure.
MrSpaM Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 Only reason i can see in this is possibly keeping him on in a coaching role as the squad seem to rate him as a person. Really can't see him playing any football at all for us next season. Must say this bit made me laugh "As well as meeting supporters and signing autographs, Matt and team-mate Steve Howard will be helping staff process season ticket applications for the 2011/12 season, which are coming in ahead of the campaign's best-price deadline on March 31." Looks like we know why he's being kept on now then, must be a vacancy at the ticket office come the end of the season
Thracian Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 Easy enough to understand in the current circumstances. We don't know which league we'll be playing in next season and Oakley is known to be not only a good and fairly durable professional but he's known to be a good and positive influence around the place, including the training ground. I'm thinking out loud but would see no reason Oakley might now get involved in other areas involving coaching/aspects of management. Oakley is an intelligent, articulate club captain and I can see no reason why he couldn't remain an all-round asset to us. No-one complained when Powell moved on from playing to non-playing duties.
AjcW Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 Yes he can hardly walk anymore and adds little on the pitch, but he's a fantastic professional and surely adds invaluable experience off the field, helping develop young players, passing on his experiences on and off the field, it's all vital! I'd imagine this could go the same way as Powell, play a few games, do his badges and become a coach at the club. Absolutely no problem with this(as long as he hardly plays )
Lester LXXIV Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 Unbelievable! Keep your eyes peeled guys the way he's dishing out contracts, we might all get a letter drop through the door in the next week!
Ric Flair Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 Nothing wrong with this, if Sven hasn't already learnt that our current central midfield cannot be relied upon for a whole season then we'll be bringing more midfielders in anyway. Oakley is good to have around the squad.
Fox92 Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 As a footballer, he has had a fantastic career playing for two good clubs at the highest level. Now though, Oakley is past it in my opinion. He offers nothing. We definetly need another strong central midfielder to come off of the bench if the likes of Wellens and Abe are substituted.
Dan Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 Must be something behind the scenes Sven likes about him then, because on the pitch he offers virtually nothing anymore. Underhyped you could say.
Stevosevic Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 Nothing wrong with this, if Sven hasn't already learnt that our current central midfield cannot be relied upon for a whole season then we'll be bringing more midfielders in anyway. Oakley is good to have around the squad. Spot on.
