Les-TA-Jon Posted 12 July 2011 Posted 12 July 2011 All this talk of which club is bigger is utter bilge. Your only as big as your last season. That makes us a mid to upper championship team. Our new found richness counts for nothing until we back that up with a good finishing position. This! I've never really understood all this "mean banter" as it were. Got no problem with banter as long as it's actually grounded in reality. Is there any reason to moan about and slag off Bristol? Even Forest and Leeds (which we all dislike) are good clubs.

I think that average gates in either current or last season must count toward guaging who is and who isn't a big club. If the money/Sven mix works we will be increasing in capacity to over 40,000 in a couple of years. ( And we will have 30,000+ for a pre season friendly in a couple of weeks time ).
ScouseFox Posted 12 July 2011 Posted 12 July 2011 On par with Coventry, Charlton blah blah blah. Still bigger and better than Bristol fucking City.

To be fair though, will we have 30,000 + on the opening day off the season, when it really means something??? I think not

Happy Fox Posted 12 July 2011 Author Posted 12 July 2011 To be fair though, will we have 30,000 + on the opening day off the season, when it really means something??? I think not Do you mean our first home game of the season
ROB-THE-BLUE Posted 12 July 2011 Posted 12 July 2011 150 pages and we still look a million miles away from signing him!
Reazon Posted 12 July 2011 Posted 12 July 2011 Whats wrong with being compared to Coventry and Charlton, two recent premier league clubs? Honestly you lot need to have a f**king word with yourselves, you sound like a right bunch of twats.

I think not Hmm, I think we'll get a good gate and won't be far off that. Always difficult in August though with so many fans on holiday, etc.

ch4mbo Posted 12 July 2011 Posted 12 July 2011 To be fair though, will we have 30,000 + on the opening day off the season, when it really means something??? I think not Not likely as we're away on the opening day, unless of course we're taking the biggest ever travelling support.

We will average higher gates than Coventry and Charlton put together this season! A bit like suggesting Bristol City are like Tranmere Rovers and Burton Albion!!!!!!
Reazon Posted 12 July 2011 Posted 12 July 2011 Oh right, I had no idea average gates were the measure of public perception. What a stupid comment.

cc_star Posted 12 July 2011 Posted 12 July 2011 Christ, are people really looking at attendances We've got a bit higher attendances, but the new stadium helped bring more families in We've spent more time in the top flight a won a couple more cups - but we've never won anything major We both have rich owners, it's just ours are trying to buy immediate success Who really cares? Back on topic I think we need another player upfront, Yakubu seems to have settled back in at Everton, so Maynard fits the bill, I'd like him & I couldn't care if we bought him for £3m or £30m - it's not our money & we can't do anything about it anyway, all the money we're spending is basically advance Premier League earnings & if we don't get there, we're hardly up the creek because the owners have invested too much to lose. I say, go for him but it doesn't look like we're willing to pay what their owner wants (what he's worth is nothing to do with it as he's not for sale), that means we have to put up or shut up and the time to do either of those things is now

I can see what you are saying but I don't buy it at all. Newcastle, in their relegation season, were supposedly one of the biggest 6 teams in the country. They had large attendances to boot. They still went down and I don't think anyone can argue they didn't deserve it. Therefore they were a championship club so have no right to be classed as one of the biggest clubs in England... especially not in the same breath as Man United ect. I think there's a massive difference between how big a following a club has and how big the stage is on which a club plays. For example, Blackpool have a small following but deservedly got promoted to the prem. Based on that they are a more successful club than Leicester of late and in that respect are bigger and have achieved more success in recent times. Look at it form a players point of view: You could play for a team in the championship gettgin 30k per week in the stands or play in the prem with only 20k in the stands. The majority would go to the prem team i would suggest.
FallenAngel Posted 12 July 2011 Posted 12 July 2011 OMG is this still going on?? I thought this thread was about Maynard?
blueblood88 Posted 12 July 2011 Posted 12 July 2011 Can we stop going on about how 'big' we are? We are historically bottom end Div 1/Prem - top end Div 2/Championship club, end of.

You've gone from one extreme to the other, completely disregarding average attendances and then saying because Blackpool were in the Prem for a year they are a bigger club than Leicester. It's a combination of things.

It's a combination of things. I haven't gone from any extreme. I've used examples to show why attendances alone are not a factor in the size of a club. As i said before, you're only as big as your last finishing position!

Based on that they are a more successful club than Leicester of late and in that respect are bigger and have achieved more success in recent times. Blackpool also spent nearly 30 years outside the top 2 leagues - we've only spent 1 in our entire history. One failed season in the top flight doesn't make them a bigger club. Wigan, a team with a fanbase around 15k, could remain for the next 20 years in the Premier League, and still not be as big as half the teams currently in the Championship. Look at it from a players point of view: You could play for a team in the championship getting 30k per week in the stands or play in the prem with only 20k in the stands. The majority would go to the prem team i would suggest. Depends on the circumstances. Look at the choices facing Wayne Routledge right now.
